My first city is always named Berwick (where I live) and other high production cities will be named after big cities in my area. This is so when I'm in the advisor screen it's easier for me to remember where the city might be and what's it's primary role is.

that rules becasue i usually name a coastal city after Bath ironworks too!!! I also somtimes enjoy naming my cities after places close to where i live.

Like some others here have said, I give my cities practical, identifier-type names. The original one is Capital City, then it depends on resources, terrain and other locational variables. Any city on a coastline is called "Port" something or other, while expendable cities get names like Marginal or Boringtown or Sacrifice City. A city founded by a settler from a goody hut is Serendipity. And so on. The idea is that I can tell by the name roughly where on the map the city lies, and how important it is to my empire.

Once in awhile I just go goofy and come up with whimsical naming schemes. I almost never take the default names, though.

I don't rename conquered cities -- the fact that they retain their original names reminds me that they're spoils of war.
