I usually dont rename large cities that i conquer because of their inspirational value. I let the game name my founded cities. The smaller cities that i capture i try to rename with something that sounds lie it's from my civ (if im chinese then ill name it Shongwong or something). I like the Boo.com idea.

Sometimes I will name them in a word association way. I will name my first productive coastal city Bath (after Bath Iron Works down the street). My first city is always named Berwick (where I live) and other high production cities will be named after big cities in my area. This is so when I'm in the advisor screen it's easier for me to remember where the city might be and what's it's primary role is.

Endureth

I always name my capitol 'Capitol'. After that I try to name my cities numerically with their directional postion relative to my capitol. I'll also add resource to the names if applicable. An example:

City #
1. Capitol
2. 2ndWest
3. 3rdSouth
4. 4thSW
5. FifthNorth
6. SixthNorthIron
etc...

This is adapted from Civ 2. It's useful, but not as useful as in the previous version because the game just flips by city's in anarchy.
Also, does anybody else miss the 'in-city' map that used to show the world map with the current city centered? You used to be able to pull this up from right inside the city screen. Man was that useful! Now you actually have to leave the city to see this map (carpel tunnel, here I come!).

If I've missed how to do this, please point out the shift-whatever command for me. Thanks!

I will rename a any city that I will be selling numerous times to the computer.

I usually name it 'the Brooklyn Bridge' because I still crack up when the trade screen shows "What will you offer me for the Brooklyn Bridge"

Actually, the real reason for the name change is because I've accidently sold the wrong city one time (FP + Iron Works) and that was a game wrecker. I tried to play it out, but the loss was devastating.

How does one rename a city in Civ3?
I was trying to do this with my latest game when as the Indians, I founded so many cities I ended up with 'Delhi 2', and it irritated me to no end..

I even add a number to the beginning of the city name.

Playing the English, my first city would be "01 London", my second would be "02 Birmingham", my tenth might be "10 Southampton" and so forth. That way, when I am going from one city screen to another, I get the cities in the chronological order according to their founding (or their addition to my empire, in the case of conquered cities).

Pedantic? Sure.:D

When you found the City your Advisor asks you, which name your new City should have.
But you can also Rename already founded Cities by Right-Clicking on the City-Tile. One of the Options given you there is "Rename City".

I nearly always rename conquered or culture-captured cities.
E.g. If the Germans build a silly little place and I take it over with culture, I would call it "Bismarck's Folly", "The Shame of Germany" or something like that.
If I take it over by force I would call it "Lebensraum" or "Wimpsheim", etc.
I try to keep it civ-specific, so for Japanese it might be "Kamikazeville" or "Eastern Resource Area 1".
That's part of the fun, I reckon.

I actually like naming cities and usually rename captured cities to fit the civilization that I am playing as. And while it by no means happens every time, there is plenty of historical precedent for renaming cities when a new civ takes over (granted that some are just translation changes):

Constantinople to Istanbul
Ragusa to Dubrovnik
Jorvik to York
New Amsterdam to New York
Lugudnum to Lyons
Laibach to Ljubljana
Danzig to Gdansk
Carthago Novo to Cartagena
Koenigsburg to Kalingrad
etc.....

I can post again!!!!:goodjob: (I had some problems with logging in).

I sometimes make cities with names of beer brands like

Heineken
Grolsch
Dommelsch
Leeuw
Hoegaerden
Kasteel
Bud
etc..

I usually name cities after my friends and my hobby's and stuff. And when I'm out of inspiration I'll name them after the geographical features of the surroundings of the city.

So a city in a valley could be named: Silver Valley
Or a city on a mountain edge: Brass End
Or one on a small island: Isle of 1912 (year of exploration)

And I ALWAYS rename my cities. I get pretty bored using names I know and it really helps to rename them cuz you 'print' it in your memory. I never forget the place of a city working this way.

I always stick with the given names for cities I create. Usually I leave all the names as they are. Sometimes I get on a name kick and I try to rename all the captured cities to be more in line with my Civ.

My pet feature that I would like to see added to Civ3 is for the game to auto-suggest the next name in your Civ's names of cities list as the new name when I rename a conquered city. That way when I capture Tenochtitlan (which I've always pronounced techno-chicken in my head since Civ1) I can rename it to the next available city name from my Civ without having to get the name manually out of the list... which I don't do now because it isn't worth the effort.

I rename citys when I go on Rampage trying to eliminate every civ. hehehe then there is even less to remind who was once there. Its a kind of ethnic cleanseing I guess. hehehe Just really want to see the city in my color that all I care about. I guess it deopends on mood.

I sometimes get a childish, stupid, moronic kick out of renaming cities in a manner that would insult my nearest neighbours (despite the fact that they haven't got the slightest clue). So a polite / gracious Joan of Arc comes on screen to re-negotiate a trade, and in the background I can see my border cities: Joan's a Whore, &^*% the French, Eat My &^% Froggy. It's made even more fun if I've just sabotaged their Wonder production (and she knows it).

The only time I renamed a town was when I took one from Elizabeth, who had been exceptionally difficult the whole game. The town had three squares with Gems, so I renamed it JewelFromtheCrown...

I used to rename cities in CivII when examining the city with a spy. They'd either get names that would irritate a human opponent, or a name that indicated what defensive units or improvements were in the city.
I'm not sure if you can rename other civs cities this while spying in civIII

One People
One Empire
One Ruler

As my Empire expands, it conquers, taking with it all before me...
Each city is incorporated into my empire and becomes one with the state.

Ergo I do name changes to match my civ.

Crush all enemies
See them driven before you
and hear the lamentation of the women.

I rename cities alot of the time, depends what civ I am playing. I generally do not rename conquered cities because later on it reminds me of dead enemies and shows the limits of my original empire. I dont like how in Civ 3 if you dont pick the first city name it keeps showing up again and again until you put it down (I refuse to name any city Babylon for Rasta reasons). A common city name for me if something like "Comingforyou" or "Strategem" for cities on the edge of my enemies that will serve as gateways to conquest.
