What method do you use most with your first settlement?

1. Take what ya got and just do it!

2. Move around a little, til I get cozy.

3. Nothins forever baby! Build it always open for a better deal in a few turns!

Let me know what you think!

Thanks!

:goodjob:

I allow myself one move. the move is toward the coast or inland. I prefer being completly inland on my capitol. This is for reasons of bombardment and sneaky ai landings...

I always build my first city in 4000 BC because every AI does it. If I don't I will always see that ugly dent in the histograph where I have zero score on the year 4000 BC. And also generally on a random map you starting location will be pretty decent.

if i can move next to an river or off of a bonus resource i will. i also like to move to the coast if possible because i like to build the colossus in my capital.

I usually move the worker to higher ground or the next most promising exploration spot and then decide.

Then:
Move off a bonus food square to save food production, also means that I will be able to satisfy step 2.

Then:
I try to plant the city where there is a food bonus square, it's worth moving to get it inside the city corona immediately when the city is founded.

Else:
I try and move away from mountains next, they are great for production but this is usually a science type city so trade and size are important.

Or:
Grasslands are best so if some of the terrain is desert or tundra I'll try and move away from that towards more promising land.

Or:
Able to move to a river square to save having to build an aqueduct later.

Or:
If I can see no advantage of moving then I plant the city where it is and get down to work.

If all else fails:
If the starting spot is really poor, with no promise of improvement of the location. I get it working and disband it later in hope of moving the palace to a better spot once I can see more of the world.

Building on the original starting spot does end up being pretty common though, making the best of it.

If I don't like my starting place, I let my worker move in a direction I think there might be a good starting place first. Then, if there's something good nearby, I'll settle there. Otherwise, I'll just start a new game.

I'll consider a variety of things, including rivers and bonus squares. The big aggravation for me, however, is being one square inland. I either want to be on the coast or completely off of it with almost every city, but especially the capitol. I've been known to move to the coast or away from it even when I know objectively that the current square is still better. You have to enjoy the start for a good game. :D

I normally just plop my city where I started from.

3 exceptions:
1) if I'm sitting on top of a strategic or luxury resource
2) if I'm 1 square away from having a river next to my city
3) if I'm surrounded by very unfavorable terrains. ie all mountains or all jungles.

1) and 2) I'll give myself 1 move. Any more than that would put myself behind enough that I can't catch any of the wonders I want.

3)<-- I'd just start the game over.

I do what some others do. :)
I send my worker somewhere to see if there's anything good nearby, and if there is then I move 1 or 2 turns max.

sometimes I move until I find another player and build my city to take a recource or lux. then I make only archers and kill them. and hopefully get their land and my old start to expand on.

I take what i got, unless there is 8 or more squares of bad terrains (Desert, tundra, jungle)
then i propably leave...

When im in a mood for relaxing, i quickstart a new game til' there's nothing else than grassland, a river and a couple hills... :)

Move my worker, move my settler a maximum of once, and then settle. Unless there is a stunning position just of reach, e.g. 4 wines, or flood plain, etc.

Because it's a game. :p

I just settle right in the same spot. It's a waste of science turn to do otherwise. BTW, always remember to press F6 on the first turn (after the town is built).

Well, most of the time I settle where I start, but if I see a better looking place in the range that I can see, then I settle there. That doesn't happen to often though.

I don't let my Settler linger beyond 2 turns, and often take the spot that I'm occupying at the beginning. If playing expansionist, I'll send my scout to lift the black spots a bit before building the city just to be more sure.

If the location's really unsuitable (Tundra and Mountains, all Desert, all Hills, even all Jungle) I restart.

Wrong :p
