Do you speak pig latin fluently? Not just knowing it, but can interpret the words as quickly as people speak it and be able to speak it yourself.

For those who don't know what pig latin is; it's basically modified english. You take the first sound of the word, place it in the back of the word, and add an 'a' sound. So turtle would be 'urtletei', one would be 'onwei' etc.

It IS the first sound, not the first letter. But it's not the first syllable either.

I voted esyei because I can, kinda. Not always, but sometimes I can. SOmetimes I find myself totally dumbfounded by it, other times I'm practically native. =P

Why would anyone want to learn this? I'd rather spend my time learning an actual language that more than 500 people speak, thank you very much. :)

Several hundred thousands speak Igpay Atinlay, I assure you.
Anyway, it ain't that hard to learn if you have English already... English is a good basis. :p

Well, what I really meant was people that ONLY speak it, so that you'd need to learn it to speak to them; it's not like there's a tribe of people whose native tounge is Pig Latin. :p

I speak Pig Latin fluently.

Scio Latinum etiam.

I know Latin also.

So you've never heard of The Porkine Republic of Latinia (aka Pig Latinia)?
Oh, the ignorance these days!
:mischief:

So then it's a waste of time to learn real Latin also? After all, there haven't been any native speakers of Latin for quite a while.
Not quite, since Latin has it uses, namely if you want to go into law, want to get a better understanding of Latin-based modern languages, or if you're a die-hard orthodox Catholic.

Note that I'm not condemning Pig Latin or anything. I'm sure it's fun and/or good mental exercise. It's just that I probably will never try learning it.

I do agree that though Pig Latin can be used as a good mental exercise, it doesn't have that much real use. It's just that the fact that a language has no native speakers isn't much of a reason to not learn it (In the case of Pig Latin, there aren't really any reasons to learn it). Then again, maybe that's why so few people know Esperanto.

and to think the time you spent speaking pig latin is time you would have otherwise wasted  (playing civ  )

the only real use for it is to keep conversations private (and that doesn't always work as people will pick up a word or two) if you want to keep a secret try sign language (like me :D) or morse code
