Do you usually play FfH2 with the aim of winning or trying to roleplay your civ?

I usually play FfH2 not particularly with the aim of winning the game but trying exclusively to roleplay the civilization i'm playing with.
My objective is to make the entire game a plausible history in the world of Erebus.
It often restrict my choices when choosing a religion for example no Bannor with OO or Malakim with CoE or even the civic which to me seems not fit with the background of any civ.
It's the same for units, i never use Heroes or units which are not fit with civilization e.g. Calabim Paladin Vampires or Elohim Saverous.
It probably restrict the freedom of gameplay when playing but i'd rather enjoy this fantastic mod based on its history and flavour.

I wonder how much people prefer to play the mod exclusively roleplaying civs avoiding to take advantage of some situations because they are not "flavourful" or simply accept less freedom in the gameplay instead of trying to play the game with the aim of winning, enjoying total freedom during gameplay!?

Playing to win is not total freedom. You still have to follow a plan on how to win and base that plan on some strategy which work (or at least avoid strategies you know doesn't work).

Total freedom is when you don't focus on either but neither rule them out. You can play to win, or roleplay, but it's not the ultimate goal. That is how I play.

secounded.

I like to roleplay and win, though I value roleplay more, so no Ashen Veil Bannor or Vampire Paladins for me.

A bit of both. I play to win in that at the start of the game, I have a specific victory condition in mind. But during the game itself, I usually roleplay my way to that victory (or defeat), and it's usually a victory of the sort the civ would try to achieve; no Elohim conquest victories. And I particularly enjoy going non-canon (Order Orcs, for example), but even then I usually roleplay consistently for the theme I'm going for.

I find myself roleplaying until/unless the game is in the bag and there's no real way I can lose. At that point I often break from character and decide to conquer everyone.

Both. When I'm the Balseraphs, I'm out to win the Balseraph way -- sowing discord, mocking my opponents, making mischief. I like to exercise the unique features for my civilization and ride that to victory.

Bit of both.

Mostly play to win, but just enough RP that it is not the optimum path. For instance, as Svaltalfar, one plays with your food, you don't kill it outright which would be the sensible military thing to do.

On the other hand, I'm still Gamist enough that I will do Calabrim Paladins or Bannor Vampires. (That game I dominated Losha Vales and two regular Vampires. Suddenly my formerly pure as a driven snow Bannor SoD was now vampiric and eating cities. This included Donal Lugh and the two Order religion heroes.)

Well, one of the cool things about this mod is that there are so many opportunities for anyone to become either corrupted or redeemed. I think the chance to play contrary to some predetermined good guys=white hats formula can actually be really interesting from a story point of view.

e.g. once noble Elohim becoming subtly seduced by "students" of the Ashen Veil, still half-convincing themselves they are saviors leading the world into a bright new future. Or Perpentach inexplicably takes up the banner of the Empyrean - but no one is ever quite sure what his intentions really are..

Funny you should mention this: I'm thinking of playing that game one of these days. I don't know if I'll go as far as the Ashen Veil though, but the slow corruption would start with the best of intentions, in a fashion that would uphold the values of the Elohim (as per canon), but start them on the slippery slope into the pit. Once you compromise your principles, each further compromise is easier to justify, and so it would go with the Elohim.

Incidentally, I do like playing the Elohim, and they were the first civ I started with, but ironically that makes it easier for me to contemplate doing this. It's writing an alternate history so to speak, and I enjoy reading alternate history fiction.

What is best in Fall From Heaven? To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women! Roleplay just makes it funner!

This thread screams for a poll.

I like to roleplay my games. FfH give you so much diversity that I think I havent played every civ yet. Maybe after I played every one twice I will think about optimizing my strategies and play for score or sth.

In my current game playing the Sidar where I'd intended to go CofE I seem to have got sidetracked, becoming the only Empyrean nation in a world of Ashen Veil (I blocked FoL and RoK in an attempt to force the game into a good vs evil game)

I have though now captured the CofE holy city, but find myself being loathe to switch as I'd lose Chalid Astrakein who through a combination of Pillar of Fire and Crown of Brilliance makes an excellent team with Rathus Denmora...particularly as he has Orthus's Hammer giving him blitz (as well as his Netherblade, and now the freshly aquired Gela from Hyborem).

I'm thinking that sticking with Empyrean should also be more of a challenge as I can't imagine that all these AV nations around me are going to peacefull for ever...

I don't think I've won a single game of FFH that wasn't tha Hippus on a tiny pangaea lol.

I like to RP, or sometimes just make a little kingdom for half an hour and then quit, I rarely go back to my saves.

Sometimes I go completely overboard and start making a little story with some units as characters. One of which I'm working on still to put in the Random Stories thread.
