Domination Limit?

Hi ,

Been reading dome very enlightening threads on GOTM. What a great forum.

Small Question: What is meant precisely by the term reaching the "domination limit".

Thanks

It's the point at which you will win a Domination victory. On [ptw] and [civ3] this is 2/3 of the land+coast tiles. If you're going for some victory other than Domination you can maximize your score by getting close to the Domination limit, but not exceeding it, as early as possible.

"domination limit" commonly refers to the maximum size of your territory until domination victory is triggered. this is 2/3 (66,6%) of all land and coastal tiles on the map, sea doesn't count, ocean cannot be dominated, anyway.
for domination victory to be triggered you will need 66,6% of the world population, too.

Since this topic was raised, I'll use the occasion to ask my first newbie question here.

Is it okay to use utilities to check if you are approaching the domination limit? I've seen references in the GOTM write-ups to things like "I stopped just short of the dom limit" -- and I assume everyone's not counting tiles! :)

Come to think of it, are there generally accepted / not accepted uses for utilities like Dianthus's in GOTM? I haven't used any yet (I'm new to Civ3), but they look quite handy.

Thanks,
nikof

Yes, you can use 'some' utilities!

You can't use any utility that actually reveals information not available to the player in a normal game (or can't be calculated from teh available information), and no trainers.

Ie -> Feel free to use something like CRPMapstat => Just don't activate the 'spoiler' flag!.

Goodness - my first post, and a super-fast reply from ainwood himself! Thanks very much for the quick answer. Looking forward to my first GOTM in mid-June. Umm, unless it's deity...

ainwood, there isn't a spoiler flag in CRpMapStat! It does however show information that is not necessarily available on the Territory tab and the Terrain tab :

Aeson OK'd these for use with the HOF as is, but maybe you feel differently?

Oh wow! I didn't know about this version of mapstat - is this yours dianthus?
The one I've got just shows the territory claimed and left to domination. The terrain breakdown is cool.

This is the same level of data that's available in the plain MapStat (version 2, at least). These tools must only be used to fine tune your domination position once you have the full map of the world, and you could count the civs, their pops and their tiles yourself if you had the patience.

@Samildanach: Version 2 of Mapstat/JMapstat shos terrain breakdown. I seem to recall version 3 shows it if you hit a button or a menu option?

Yes, it's part of my CRpSuite. If you like the Territory/Terrain tabs then you definitely ought to check out the others!

My mistake (and I was actually using this myself just yesterday!)

I think that the honour-code guideline should be that you can only use this when you have the full world map & all contacts.

Its not really a lot different than using the spaceship screen to get the names of the other civs, and the land breakdown doesn't give you much help in terms of identifying the actual landform. :)

If possible I would like to change CRpMapStat so it can be used right from the start. The Happiness tab, and the next tab in development, would be useful early on. I'm changing the Territory tab to show only the civs which you are in contact with. In [c3c] the Victory Condition screen shows the % world area and % world population for your nearest rival, so showing information not visible. The Territory tab would then only be showing information for the other rivals and to more accuracy, so not THAT much more info. Would that be sufficient to allow it to be used? I could make it count only visible tiles and make counting non-visible one of my "Spoiler" checkboxes if necessary.
