Don Deity: Warlords 2.08, huge random continents map, epic speed

Well I'm only an emperor and not even a good one, therefore I think your advice is probably the better one. I think the reason why I argue against it, is simply because I never even considered doing something like it (and to me it just feels wrong). I think we don't need to argue over which course of action is the better one in economical terms: Not razing the cities gives you better developed, better populated cities, earlier. The question is, is it feasible to keep and hold the conquered cities? Don has no medic3 unit, which means he needs some rest after conquering a city anyway and this is better done inside a conquered city than inside Ash's cultural borders. Don has nationalism, so he can draft defenders and move them to the conquered cities while his frontline troops heal. From my experience the AI considers attacking an advancing enemy stack more important than retaking a lost city, therefore a small garrison should suffice. If Ash does retake a city, this still has the benefit of preventing these troops to help defend his holy city or damaging Don's attacking stack.

As Don has said he's not razing cities, this is not going to arise. He's going to generate a great general soon enough in this war to promote a unit to medic 3.

I suspect you're right that Don will draft and whip as many units as he can to hold captured cities and add to his stack of trebs and cavalry.

When you raze a city on deity, another deity AI will settle in place ASAP. Moreover, you never know when a war campaign on deity will run out of steam...and you don't want additional "you razed one of our cities" penalties on diplomacy, especially if you vassalize the AI - you want it to like you enough for tech trading.

I was expecting the target civ to divert production into settlers to resettle and the escorts provided cease to be an immediate concern for the battle stack.

In this instance, Don was planning on taking all the civ's cities. He does not intend to raze any of them.

Thanks everybody for the feedback… …I’m finally back (but some of you might have anticipated that (again) by this post

@ Bran:

Greetings and welcome to the forums here. Thanks also for your tips and your contribution to the story (hope to see you again in the bar later)

…

But now back to the story:

I hadn’t had time to do much writeups, but I continued the game and played (or better: tried to play) the war against the Indians as agreed and discussed above in 5 relatively short turnsets (LOOTS of stuff was happening, sometimes the whole situation changed within one or two turns, including lots of warring and moving lots of troops around…)

…

But here we go:

PREVIEW:

The Indian war

The war with India is over at the point I finished the last turnset, and there is only one word that describes this war and the related political events and that’s WEIRD, just weird…

Without spoiling too much, I can already tell you, that from quick success in the beginning, to the need of adapting and changing plans completely (like every two turns or so), which also includes rifles (NOT Don Deity’s rifles…) and getting backstabbed you can expect quite some interresting stuff, which will make up for the rather uneventfull turnsets up to this war. Basically everything that could happen happened, and sometimes all at once…

Like said before, I played in quite short turnsets. The “Indian war” chapter will therefore contain 5 story-posts. I will try to write and post the first one within the next two or three days:

- A crusade towards the East
- Nationalism and the Taj Mahal… …for India
- Rifles!!!
- Getting backstabbed…
- Changing plans... ...Peace with India

...

See you Soon

Snaaty

Well, that sounds like you had a heck of a time playing out this turns! Hopefully your palace in London and its collection of stonemasonry are still intact...
I am eagerly awaiting your update(s)!

Damn, i cant wait...

I have been lurking since this story started, and only now have i come out from under my rock and commented. Love it mate, keep up the good work.

Chapter 2:
Continental war(s)

The Indian war I: A crusade towards the East

...

It turned out that Don Deity’s lonely caravel in fact was finding something eventually, because after some more decades of sailing, it came across a quite similar boat wearing an unknown flag. It seemed that the strange folk sailing in their direction (which had by sheer luck and coincidence managed to build a completely identical boat then the English) called themselves Chinese. They were a unfriendly lot, but after Don Deity showed them what wonderful origami donkeys and pigeons he could do with something called “Paper”, they turned out to be quite pleased, and in fact, after Don Deity had enlightened them in the great art of origami (=gifting them Paper) they agreed to sell their maps for some gold to the English:

41.JPG

This revealed the surprising fact, that there existed altogether four continents on this world and apparently, Don Deity’s and the one inhabited by the yellow, brown and bluish collared civilisations (=judging from city names: Zulu, Mongolia & Korea) were the bigger ones. Although this was quite good news for the early-game tech-race (pre-Optics), this would cause BIG trouble for mid/end-game, because this meant (IF Don Deity should somehow really manage to survive on, or even better, gain control over his own continent) that there would have to be several naval invasions to succeed in the long (veeeeery long) term goal of world domination…

…

Nut much later, the Chinese knocked on Don Deity’s door again (well, to be honest, they didn’t really knock on Don Deity’s palace door, because Don Deity’s palace was quite far away from anything the Chinese could reach… …so Don Deity simply had beamed over to the Chinese capital some time ago and had installed a fake door in the Chinese throne room… …this was the door Mao, the Chinese leader was actually knocking at… …and quite furious by the way, because Don Deity hadn’t bothered to beam over and respond since 15 minutes now).

Zuummmpppp (Don Deity appeared in the Chinese throne room):

“Hey Mao, old buddy, how are you doing”

“I just banged 15 minutes on this stupid door… …I even have caught a splinter, look here… …and you dare asking me how I’m doing?”

“Well, yea, so how ARE you doing?”

“Fine, thanks, and you?”

“Also quite fine… …you know, we just prepare to backstab our neighbours and best friends, the Indians…”

“Sound like a good idea, we usually also do that with our neighbours and friends… …but only from time to time, like every several hundred years or so…”

“And…?”

“There leader is called Mansa.”

“So what…?

“And there civilisation calls themselves “Malines”…”

“Why are you telling me all this…?”

“I’m bored…”

“You knocked on that damn door and had me spend almost half a second for beaming over here only to tell me that you are bored???… …bye Mao…”

“Wait… …please… …wouldn’t you like to have a cup of tea with me, and maybe a cake or some sweats?”

“No… …bye Mao…”

“Wait, please wait… …only a short tea and a very little peace of cake… …please… …umh… …maybe if I throw in a tech deal?”

“Well, OK then, bring on the stuff… …I’ll have a green tea with a small slice of lemon and a banana biscuit cake with some chocolate… …what technology are we talking about by the way?”

“I might offer you Banking for Education…”

“This is quite ridiculous… …bye Mao… …oh, could you please have the cake wrapped in for me, so that I can take it…”

“No, wait… …wait… …I’ve heard that you are looking for a way to slow continental trade down on your continent… …and since Banking enables Mercantilism it will greatly help you reducing ALL continental trade (by killing your own economy completely…) once you start the revolution… …so maybe you should reconsider…”

“No… …the terms of this trade are simply ridiculous… …thanks for the cake… …by Mao…”

“But I will knock on that door like every 5 minutes from now on… …until you have given Education to me, so better take this deal, because I might offer some even more useless stuff next time, you know…”

“Argh… …there you got me, I take it…”

…

Only a little later, the brave English sailors met the Malines, now they had the Chinese maps to guide them around. And it turned out that the Malines people was quite backwards, even compared to the Chinese, who had about the same tech-level then Bren… …and, much to Don Deity’s surprise, the English score was even higher then the Malines… …maybe the Chinese already HAD DONE some backstabbing…

41to42.JPG

…

But back to Don Deity’s continent:

It had taken quite a while until all warfare preparations had been met and most troops had been moved to their final position (and handed some guns), so it was only in January 305 AD, when Don Deity finally beamed over to Ash (zuummmpppp) and explained politely, that there will be war now between England and India (much to Ash’s surprise, as you all can imagine).

…

21 battalions of cavalry and 6 battalions of trebuchets (more or less finished…) had either been moved in position near the Indian border or had been assigned to do some border-patrol in general:

On the practical side, this only meant that the English army got divided into two groups: “Army Group East” and “Army Group North”.

…

Army Group East was set to advance on Hyderabad and Karachi, like planned, while Army Group North was again split into two groups. One group was ordered to patrol and hold the English border between Nottingham and Chinook and to protect the English workers, which were already preparing a road towards the Indian territory there. This would help the English trebuchets in the Army Group North (which sadly still were in production or on the way to the frontline at that point, so the advance on Madras had to be delayed a little, which basically meant that half of the precious planning and timing was nullified already on the first turn of this war…) to move faster. The second group was split in several small taskforces and given the job to patrol along the stretched English border towards Celt and Greece, as adviced by the scarred Roman.

In general, this attack seemed to be a little rushed and not too carefully prepared after all (and NOT going as planned by the way, right from the start…), but Don Deity REALLY tried to do his best to attack as soon as possible, considering the new tech-situation (Ash and Alex running away every single turn a little more)… …even if this meant to strike without all troops ready and to leave some English cities completely undefended (not even a military police was present in some cities…).

…

At least, everything was proceeding according to the plan in the beginning with the “Crusade towards the East”, the advance on Karachi and Hyderabad:

Seven battalions of cavalry and three battalions of trebuchets were assigned to “Army Group East one” (AGE 1), advancing on Karachi, another five battalions of cavalry were assigned to “Army Group East two” (AGE 2) and were set to march on Hyderabad. Two battalions of cavalry remained between Canterbury and Warwick as a “Backup” and to defend these cities from any counterattacks and to protect the workers that finally had started to build a road from Canterbury towards Warwick, to connect the sad and lonely (and useless) city of Warwick with the rest of the English empire…

…

There was surprisingly little resistance, when AGE 1 and AGE 2 finally crossed the border and pushed eastwards into India. Some horse archers, crossbows and a knight here and there tried to sneak past them, but they were all taken down before they could advance deeper into English territory. The counterattacks didn’t seem to be coordinated very good, it seemed more like a desperate effort to slow the English advance on the Indian cities down a little, in order to gain time to organize a proper resistance. It really seemed that Don Deity had caught Ash completely off guard and that Ash never had expected an attack from this side… …Don Deity now really thought his friend was right and Ash’s main army was in fact stationed near the borderline towards Greece… …which basically meant completely at the opposite side of the huge Indian empire. So his own advancing battalions would have some precious time now to set up the siege engines near Karachi, even without Madras captured and to put up some defences for the main Indian counterstrike…

…

In the tundra forest near Karachi:

“Captain, our trebuchets are in place now, should we start to bombard the city defences?”

“Yes, do so… …have you already received word form our informant inside Karachi about the defensive forces garrisoning the city?”

“Yes sir, two battalions of longbows and two battalions of pikemen… …the longbows shouldn’t be too much of a problem, but the pikemen… …fighting them without weakening the Indian defences WAY more could lead to heavy casualties…”

“Do we have any information about Indian reinforcements approaching the city?”

“Negative, Sir… …but we could send three battalions of cavalry to the floodplains behind Karachi. They would be protected by the river and could spot any approaching forces in advance…”

“Do so… …and as soon as our trebuchets are ready, have them fire again…”

…

In the outskirts of Hyderabad:

“We managed to get here even faster then planned… …only two battalions of longbows and one battalion of pikemen are guarding the city, and they all seem to be quite inexperienced and frightened, by the look of it...”

“Wait another hour, and then the forces near Karachi should be in place, blocking the main Indian supply routes to Hyderabad, then advance with ALL your men…”

…

After the heaviest battles were over, Don Deity had a closer look at the maps showing the eastern front and the Indian and English troop movements…

42.JPG

Hyderabad had fallen easily in March 320 AD, cut off from any reinforcements and their defenders outnumbered and frightened… …but Karachi had been a different story. The three cavalry that had been sent out to scout for Indian reinforcements had been ambushed by two trebuchets, a catapult and finally some knights and a group of crossbowmen and macemen, coming in from the Northeast and the Northwest alike… …only thanks to the river giving them additional protection from the Northeast all of them had made it back to the English camp in the tundra-forest, most of them more dead then alive… …but in 335 AD, the constant bombardment of Karachi finally had showed some impact, and the battle chances of the English cavalry against the Indian pikemen changed more and more it favour of the English… …and with two fresh battalions of cavalry closing in from Karachi, Don Deity finally decided to strike for the city.

Only to find out that things never turned out to be as planned… …the first battalion of cavalry was slain by the defending Indian pikemen and the second was defeated also, but managed to retreat, but with most of the men heavily wounded. Still, Don Deity decided to press on… …and finally it turned out that the Indian longbows really were no match for the advancing English cavalry. The wounded Indian pikemen managed to hold back the advancing Indian troops some more, but in the end, they were brought down also. And in late September 335 AD English troops marched into the city of Karachi… ...and, since Emperor Bran´s advice was quite similar to what Don Deity would also have done, if left alone, he sticked to it and added both cities to his empire...

…

On the northern front hadn’t been much movement so far. Some Indian troops that had tried to cross the border into England near Chinook had been taken down and even an Indian settler was captured near the English border… …it made Don Deity smile a little, HOW desperate Ash must have been, by trying to invade him with a settler… …but perhaps Ash just wanted to get rid of him to save money, who knew (or simply acted stupid, because he’s the AI)…

But now there had to be some MAYOR movement in the English army there… …with all the wounded or almost dead troops down there in Karachi, the assault on Madras had to be started, to further distract Ash’s forces, which Don Deity still suggested moving down from the Greece border in heavy numbers. Backed by the fact, that the siege units for the northern army had arrived now where they should have been like 50 years before, Don Deity finally ordered that all units of the northern army (Army Group North, AGN) that could be spared from borderland sentry business, including even some minor wounded units, to close in on Madras:

43.JPG

What also could be seen in this picture above was the fact, that Don Deity’s excessive use of his golden whip hadn’t left England with too many happy inhabitant… …or better put, hadn’t left England with too many inhabitants overall. Even worse, additional unhappiness was caused by the lack of a military police in many cities…

But since the war had started, Don Deity had set two cities to build longbows so that England could muster at lest some defences in case of an emergency and to beef up the English happiness via military police in ALL cities. The basic plan from now on was that at lest two cities would continue producing troops until the end (may it be good or bad), and Don Deity would try his best to keep up the English power rating from now on to reduce the likelihood of VERY BAD surprises…

…

The English research had been set towards Chemistry some while ago, after Gunpowder had been discovered, thanks to the fact that Banking had been traded with the Chinese. Once Chemistry would be discovered, it would allow Don Deity to reinforce his army with some Grenadiers… …which seemed to be a quite good plan, because facing rifles was only a question of time. But the English research was proceeding at a speed, thanks to the war, the excessive whipping and therefore the excessive dying among the English population and the fact that the English really had adopted Mercantilism that could best be described either as “baaaahhh” or “painfully slow”.

…

Only thing that could be done now was waiting for the MAJOR Indian counterattack and hoping for the best…

…

Excelent description of the war and of why you traded for banking. Anticipation of the previously mentioned backstab increases the tension of the battle. Great stuff, I'm looking forward to the next installment.

That's scarred as in battlescarred, Don Diety. I do wonder why Indian mayor's should be so feared. I think you mean major Indian counterattacks are coming.

Your initial targets all seem to have fallen as planned. Now would have been an excellent time to bribe Alex and Bren into war against Ash. Had you been able to do it much future unplesantness might have been avoided.

I don't see how you could leave Calcutta untaken whilst you drive on Bombay with all of army group east. I hope your use of german terminology does not bode ill for your eastern front.

I just never adopt mercantilism. seems so useless.
Now i wait to see who the backstabber is, and how will the english maps end after all this mess.

Emperor Bran sits in his giant marble throne and listens to the storyteller who brought the words of Don Deity's newest tale to Bran's empire. After the storyteller told them about Don Deity's fake door, Bran whispers to one of his advisors: "That's brilliant! If I had such a door I could stop to dress up the annoying messengers in the costumes of their masters and speak directly to their masters instead. Maybe then the talks will make more sense and if I am lucky their masters won't confuse me as much as the messengers - with the stupid faces they make all the time". The advisor gives him a smile, Bran continues: "I hereby appoint you as the master of fake doors and expect one of those doors here in this throne room within a moon". The advisors face turns to an undefined dark color and he murmurs something about "A mere emperor should not demand a deitys door ...". But emperor Bran is too fascinated by the evolving story of the Indian war, to listen to him. He is truly impressed by the success Don Deity's army had, even without proper preparation time and siege equipment they performed very well.

When the storyteller reached the part about the fall of Karachi in 335AD Emperor Bran jumps up in excitment: "I'm in his story! The great Don Deity mentioned my advice! Listen to this folk, they will still sing this song in a thousand years, my name will not be forgotten in the aeons to come!" He starts dancing through the great throne room "I rock, you not! I'm the king and you are nothing!" he starts making faces at his court since he has no breath left to turn his joy into more words. When Bran reaches the storyteller the later gives him a shy and uncomfortable smile. Bran realizes that something is not as perfect as it should be right now, he turns to the storyteller and tells him: "Dear storyteller you will be rewarded richly, but you pronounced my name wrong. It should sound like Bran as in 'Bran the Builder' you made it sound like Bren as in 'Bren the worthless, barbarian maniac', 'Bloodthirsty, backstabbing Bren who cannot control his wife'". The storyteller nods "Yes your grace I did, but I tell the story exactly as Don Deity wrote it".

Emperor Bran's good mood is gone in the instance of a second, he drops to his knees and cries out "Oh you cruel gods, you made my name immortal, but you made the wrong name immortal! People will remember me and my advice by the name of some unworthy celtic scum ... How have I deseved THAT?! ... *sob*".

After some time, one of his advisors tries to cheer him up: "Your grace, Don Deity has so many important tasks to look after, you can't excpect him to correctly remember the names of simple people like us ... And besides, this is a minor mixup, way better than having your hard earned battle marks be mistaken for signs of cowardice, me thinks... ". When he thinks about the 'frightened roman', emperor Bran has to restrain a giggle ... He stands up, gives the storyteller a long look "You do know how to pronounce my name the next time you tell this story in a different court, do you?". He walks out of his throne room. For a moment he considers to visit the Great Don Deity in his bar somewhere very strange, but since the events allready have unfolded and Don Deity is busy writing his story down, Bran decides not to bother the Great Don with his presence and to pay the bar a visit when he can offer suggestions about events that don't have taken place allready.

Keep up the great story, Snaaty!

Do indeed continue. So what if you make mistakes writing in a language not your first. You make your meaning clear. Hey, for all I knew, Don Diety thought the advice to have patrols was cowardly. Hence, the "frightened Roman". That gave me a good laugh, too, Emperor Bran!

I am eagerly awaiting the reports of the remainder of the Indian War. I hope you kept the cities you wanted.

Hi!, I'm also looking forward to your next update .

Since I'm not a warmonger (nor a peacemonger) this is very ... educative to me, thank you all!!

I'm sorry but I wont be able to give good advice (if at all) for I'm very inexperienced (compared to you all) but for whatever it is worth I'll try to help.

@ Bran:

I REALLY liked your contributions. They are great, keep them comming

...

@ scary Roman:

Don´t worry, I´m tough. Btw, without your tips concerning Ash´s units and the border patrols, DD would be in huge problems anyways already now... ...hope you share your wisdom and ideas again after the Indian war, for the next chapter, when the story has cought up again with the game (DD will need it, believe me)

...

@ Godel & Sofista:

thanks, as long as DD survives, I will continue

...

@ Premier Valle:

Welcome on board. Btw, there is no such thing as a "bad advice", only the lack of advice can spoil a game/story

...

@ all:

The updates will take a little longer now that DD is at war, because I try to descibe the war together with the political and economical events and developments... ...but therefore they will also be a little longer;)

I hope to have the next ready this weekend

@Nice story Snaaty and so is the performance. But I wonder ... why do not you use flanking promotion to get 2 first cities faster. First two cities should be taken as fast as possible and flanking acts similar to siege weapons and 21 cavs is a strong army. About leaving emptied cities. I would started producing there longbows and whiped them at the right time. All cavs should be sent towards Ash, I think. The good thing is that you produced trebs. They are useful in the long run.

I cannot open the save and i do not want patch the game because I made changes to some XML files, which I have already told about. I do not want lose those changes.

God's be Don Deity and see you another day.
