TOTPP uses 33 whenever an extension needs to store data in the saved game, since this would make them incompatible with vanilla anyway. Otherwise it uses 32.
Yeah we can just create a entry in the resource downloads section that links to NamelessOne's thread since downloads section supports external link instead of attached files. In several cases where I created an entry in the downloads section for a modern day project I just linked to the authors thread in case of file updates.
Yeah it's a real mess and some of those duplicates would be in completely different looking zip files too. Just a mess. I doubt anyone would hold it against you for leaving as is as it was not part of the original scope of the job request. Although if you don't do it then you'd need to go update the drop down menu again as I noticed you've removed the legacy download link entirely from it. The legacy download section will be more lost than ever if no one can get to it from the front page anymore.
Speaking of ToTPP I suspect from some of the below cases that the specially designed ToT Patch Project scenarios are messing with your version checker. Maybe @Prof. Garfield has some thoughts on that.
Right let's get into this...

Nope don't let the name fool ya.. Every time I see it I think "why did @Kasius Klej call it that???" I mean I know technically why as the scenario uses a small map but yeah soooo not a good name lol... It's a shame as it's very cool and he a put huge amount of work into that scenario & modpack as it has all these cool Civ1 graphics and clever features modded in yet he gives it name that no one will probably click on because they think its just some map thing lol! Also please note it's definitely a MGE era scenario mod.
Yup Ansar did some cataloging/rescuing work similar to what I'm doing now except he did some weird linking to the old downloads area that sometimes worked and sometimes didn't and he didn't always put author name which was bad form.

Got it! MGE scenario. It's over at the Scenario League HERE. Maybe change the download link to just link to that page as that's what I've done with other SL scenarios in the CFC download resource area as the SL is on CFC's servers so no point uploading a duplicate file wasting space. Just interlink instead.->DONE

GONE! No luck with this one. Found his project forum thread but nothing useful there. Tried his website and download link in webarchive but no luck. His profile gives his steam account name so I could try msg'ing him there.
#5 I also notice the ToT graphics area is still filled with MGE stuff.. So I'll see if I can go through that for ya soon too.
.
Well, this might still be relevant to someone who only has the original version of Civ 2. (That's probably a pretty small group at this point, though!) But the text on the page that references Test of Time is misleading IMHO -- since that's later than FW or MGE, and includes all the multiplayer functionality of MGE and a lot more besides, I'm pretty sure it would be a bad idea to try to "upgrade"Question at everyone:
Is this https://www.civfanatics.com/civ2/downloads/convert-to-civ2-gold/ still relevant?
Are these patches for Win7/10 somewhere linked/the instructions written down? Seems like it would be very relevant to have this in our information section.
My two cents: I feel like these files ought to be archived somewhere (in the spirit of all the preservation that @Blake00 is doing!) but very few people today would really need them.
Okay, so it's partially outdated, partially wrong (I was confused about the ToT part), but still partially relevant.
okay, I need to think about what to do best with this.
Agreed. And yeah @The_J that's why I think if it's too difficult or messy to merge then just leave them where they are and put back in a link in the front page menu drop down to make that legacy area accessible. No one here is demanding, begging, expecting you to merge all that old stuff into the new as it's a nightmare of a job. But if you really want to do it when we'll try to help as best as we can.My two cents: I feel like these files ought to be archived somewhere (in the spirit of all the preservation that @Blake00 is doing!) but very few people today would really need them.

Both MGE and TOT have extra feature patches these days. I hesitate to recommend putting them in the downloads section, since they both get improvements from time to time. These both include the 64-bit text box patch.
MGE User Interface Additions (CIV2UIA)
The Test Of Time Patch Project

In fact as you've noticed there are some good patches in that legacy area that I thought were already in the modern downloads area but I see they're not. In fact when I look in the MGE era modern patches area I see downloads created by Thunderfall that actually redirect to the legacy area and I think I mentioned this earlier but there's some weird bug in the legacy area where all downloads have to be opened in a new window instead of a new tab and then the window has to be refreshed just for the download to work in chrome (not sure if the same thing happens in other browsers).. as a result you can see these reviews by confused people on those downloads ( example ) saying that they don't work when they actually do but are a victim of this weird bug in the legacy area.
This actually brings up another issue caused by doing a merge. Like I said above I can see a bunch of Thunderfalls downloads in the modern area simply redirecting to the original downloads in the legacy area, and I've seen people like Ansar do the same for a bunch of legacy area scenarios too. All those redirect to legacy downloads will be broken if you merge and trash so they'll need to be fixed with fresh attachments.
Yeah I think I said it earlier but FoxAhead's Civ2UIA and TheNamelessOne's ToTPP should very much be in the downloads area, HOWEVER instead of uploading the files that would cause confusion or become out of date we INSTEAD just set the downloads as redirects that go to their original author threads (note that I just say thread and not any file in the original thread). They're very important programs who's threads can be easily missed so they should have a presence in the downloads area for people to see. It's just simply a matter of using a redirect instead of a re-upload. I can set them up at some point, no probs.
If people are unfamiliar with this and somehow think that the downloads section only supports file attachments then here's an example of a redirect I setup. I wanted more people to know about Eivind's Colonialism: The Age of Discovery Scenario that's on the Scenario League. Since the SL resides on CFC's servers I did NOT want to create a duplicate file and more importantly I did NOT want to lure people away from the SL either, so I simply setup the download to go to the SL page instead of any file attachment. Eg to see what I mean go here and click the big 'Download now' button.. don't worry it won't download the file, it'll just take you to the SL page.
https://forums.civfanatics.com/resources/colonialism-the-age-of-discovery-scenario-mge.28953/
End result is great mods can still have a presence in the CFC downloads area but no duplicate files are created and instead of stealing people away from the author's thread or the SL they actually do the opposite and give 'free advertising' lol luring more people to the source pages since the redirect forces the user to browse the original page or thread to get the latest file. In fact I forgot to ask @CurtSibling about this very earlier in the thread. I know you don't want your SL scenario files duplicated on the CFC downloads area but would you be okay with redirects to your SL pages?
.
I am confused. If I hit download on any of these downloads, I get the .exe file for download directly. Tested in both Firefox and Edge.
So... I do not understand what is happening right here, or if it is happening, or...
You have an example?
It seems that the original files are not deleted when I delete the overview pages, so this might not be a problem.
This all is very sensible, but if the authors are active, then I would let them decide about this.
Yup I just tested in Firefox & Edge they all work fine for me too, so its definitely some sort of weird issue with Chrome and those legacy download links resulting in people having troubles downloading them. Those download not work reviews were post probably becuase most people would not know about the 'open file link in new screen and hit refresh' chrome trick I found to get the files as it's an awkward workaround.
Nah I didn't mean breaking has already happened, I meant it 'will' happen if you're moving legacy files. However if you're planning on leaving all the legacy files where they originally reside on the server then yup that should mean all the existing redirects to legacy files will stay working (albeit with the chrome issue).
I thought maybe you were planning to setup all the old downloads that aren't already in the modern area as new direct file attachments but if you're going to make more redirects for all the files similar to what Thunderfall and Ansar did then yeah nothing has to be moved. Although a decent amount of mods and scenarios in the legacy area are broken up into up to 5 or so separate zip files (legacy of floppy disks and dial up internet days lol) so which means the download button redirecting to one old file won't get them the entire scenario so that's why I thought maybe you were going to move things around and merge old files.
Absolutely! I've only created download section redirects for old stuff who's authors are long gone. If someone is still here then I try to contact them to either get permission or talk them into making one themselves.
May as well ask now I guess.. @FoxAhead and @TheNamelessOne are you guys okay with having your brilliant respective Civ2UIA and ToTPP projects added to the CivFanatics Civ2 downloads area? But instead of putting a file there the download button merely redirects to the top post of your respective project threads? It's easy to make but if you don't wish to do it yourselves then I'm happy to do it for ya. If you don't want one made then that'll be respected too of course.

Oh, yeah, seems I didn't see that one.
Yes, if you can easily do that, then yes, would be appreciated.
thanks a lot.
I'll have a look at this at the weekend (hopefully).
