Download database restructuring

TOTPP uses 33 whenever an extension needs to store data in the saved game, since this would make them incompatible with vanilla anyway. Otherwise it uses 32.

Yeah we can just create a entry in the resource downloads section that links to NamelessOne's thread since downloads section supports external link instead of attached files. In several cases where I created an entry in the downloads section for a modern day project I just linked to the authors thread in case of file updates.

Yeah it's a real mess and some of those duplicates would be in completely different looking zip files too. Just a mess. I doubt anyone would hold it against you for leaving as is as it was not part of the original scope of the job request. Although if you don't do it then you'd need to go update the drop down menu again as I noticed you've removed the legacy download link entirely from it. The legacy download section will be more lost than ever if no one can get to it from the front page anymore.

Speaking of ToTPP I suspect from some of the below cases that the specially designed ToT Patch Project scenarios are messing with your version checker. Maybe @Prof. Garfield has some thoughts on that.

Right let's get into this...

Nope don't let the name fool ya.. Every time I see it I think "why did @Kasius Klej call it that???" I mean I know technically why as the scenario uses a small map but yeah soooo not a good name lol... It's a shame as it's very cool and he a put huge amount of work into that scenario & modpack as it has all these cool Civ1 graphics and clever features modded in yet he gives it name that no one will probably click on because they think its just some map thing lol! Also please note it's definitely a MGE era scenario mod.

Yup Ansar did some cataloging/rescuing work similar to what I'm doing now except he did some weird linking to the old downloads area that sometimes worked and sometimes didn't and he didn't always put author name which was bad form.

Got it! MGE scenario. It's over at the Scenario League HERE. #5 I also notice the ToT graphics area is still filled with MGE stuff.. So I'll see if I can go through that for ya soon too.

.

I've gone through this, and edited everything which doesn't require me to download and merge stuff yet. Will do that another time.

I'll probably soon move all the maps, because that seems to be fairly simple to do.

Question at everyone:
Is this https://www.civfanatics.com/civ2/downloads/convert-to-civ2-gold/ still relevant?

Well, this might still be relevant to someone who only has the original version of Civ 2. (That's probably a pretty small group at this point, though!) But the text on the page that references Test of Time is misleading IMHO -- since that's later than FW or MGE, and includes all the multiplayer functionality of MGE and a lot more besides, I'm pretty sure it would be a bad idea to try to "upgrade" TOT using these files.

Also this page says nothing about the fact that Original Civ 2 and FW are 16-bit programs, which means they will not install or run on a 64-bit OS like Windows 7 or 10 (without virtualization). MGE and TOT are 32-bit programs and can run on Windows 7 or 10, but need other patches installed first (which almost surely aren't included within the files on that page).

The link at the bottom to "Cedric’s Civilization II Page" is also broken.

My two cents: I feel like these files ought to be archived somewhere (in the spirit of all the preservation that @Blake00 is doing!) but very few people today would really need them.

Okay, so it's partially outdated, partially wrong (I was confused about the ToT part), but still partially relevant.
 okay, I need to think about what to do best with this.

Are these patches for Win7/10 somewhere linked/the instructions written down? Seems like it would be very relevant to have this in our information section.

Here's a basic text box fix by @FoxAhead . I think this is the only patch you need to run MGE/TOT on windows 7/10. (Apparently, @MastermindX 's patch is no longer valid. It might make sense to edit that post and not make it sticky anymore.)

Both MGE and TOT have extra feature patches these days. I hesitate to recommend putting them in the downloads section, since they both get improvements from time to time. These both include the 64-bit text box patch.

The Test Of Time Patch Project

@Catfish has a Test of Time installation guide on his website.

I have a guide for installing Test of Time on Linux. I should update it before it gets put somewhere "official", however, since a couple TOTPP oversights were worked around, and those workarounds are no longer necessary in v0.16.

My two cents: I feel like these files ought to be archived somewhere (in the spirit of all the preservation that @Blake00 is doing!) but very few people today would really need them.

Those files should probably be kept, but kept somewhere where you have to know what you are looking for to find them. Since you have to already have the base game installed before applying the patch, the patch is essentially useless for getting the game running these days, and having it easily found would probably do more harm than good.

Agreed. And yeah @The_J that's why I think if it's too difficult or messy to merge then just leave them where they are and put back in a link in the front page menu drop down to make that legacy area accessible. No one here is demanding, begging, expecting you to merge all that old stuff into the new as it's a nightmare of a job. But if you really want to do it when we'll try to help as best as we can. :)

In fact as you've noticed there are some good patches in that legacy area that I thought were already in the modern downloads area but I see they're not. In fact when I look in the MGE era modern patches area I see downloads created by Thunderfall that actually redirect to the legacy area and I think I mentioned this earlier but there's some weird bug in the legacy area where all downloads have to be opened in a new window instead of a new tab and then the window has to be refreshed just for the download to work in chrome (not sure if the same thing happens in other browsers).. as a result you can see these reviews by confused people on those downloads ( example ) saying that they don't work when they actually do but are a victim of this weird bug in the legacy area.

This actually brings up another issue caused by doing a merge. Like I said above I can see a bunch of Thunderfalls downloads in the modern area simply redirecting to the original downloads in the legacy area, and I've seen people like Ansar do the same for a bunch of legacy area scenarios too. All those redirect to legacy downloads will be broken if you merge and trash so they'll need to be fixed with fresh attachments.

The Test Of Time Patch Project

Yeah I think I said it earlier but FoxAhead's Civ2UIA and TheNamelessOne's ToTPP should very much be in the downloads area, HOWEVER instead of uploading the files that would cause confusion or become out of date we INSTEAD just set the downloads as redirects that go to their original author threads (note that I just say thread and not any file in the original thread). They're very important programs who's threads can be easily missed so they should have a presence in the downloads area for people to see. It's just simply a matter of using a redirect instead of a re-upload. I can set them up at some point, no probs.

If people are unfamiliar with this and somehow think that the downloads section only supports file attachments then here's an example of a redirect I setup. I wanted more people to know about Eivind's Colonialism: The Age of Discovery Scenario that's on the Scenario League. Since the SL resides on CFC's servers I did NOT want to create a duplicate file and more importantly I did NOT want to lure people away from the SL either, so I simply setup the download to go to the SL page instead of any file attachment. Eg to see what I mean go here and click the big 'Download now' button.. don't worry it won't download the file, it'll just take you to the SL page. :)
https://forums.civfanatics.com/resources/colonialism-the-age-of-discovery-scenario-mge.28953/

End result is great mods can still have a presence in the CFC downloads area but no duplicate files are created and instead of stealing people away from the author's thread or the SL they actually do the opposite and give 'free advertising' lol luring more people to the source pages since the redirect forces the user to browse the original page or thread to get the latest file. In fact I forgot to ask @CurtSibling about this very earlier in the thread. I know you don't want your SL scenario files duplicated on the CFC downloads area but would you be okay with redirects to your SL pages?

It is definitely better if our users have one central hub to get everything they want. So... going to do it.

This all is very sensible, but if the authors are active, then I would let them decide about this ;).

So... I do not understand what is happening right here, or if it is happening, or...

Yup I just tested in Firefox & Edge they all work fine for me too, so its definitely some sort of weird issue with Chrome and those legacy download links resulting in people having troubles downloading them. Those download not work reviews were post probably becuase most people would not know about the 'open file link in new screen and hit refresh' chrome trick I found to get the files as it's an awkward workaround.

You have an example?
It seems that the original files are not deleted when I delete the overview pages, so this might not be a problem.

Nah I didn't mean breaking has already happened, I meant it 'will' happen if you're moving legacy files. However if you're planning on leaving all the legacy files where they originally reside on the server then yup that should mean all the existing redirects to legacy files will stay working (albeit with the chrome issue).

I thought maybe you were planning to setup all the old downloads that aren't already in the modern area as new direct file attachments, but if you're going to make more redirects for all the old files similar to what Thunderfall and Ansar did, then yeah no files have to be moved. Although a decent amount of mods and scenarios in the legacy area are broken up into up to 5 or so separate zip files (legacy of floppy disks and dial up internet days lol) so which means the download button redirecting to one old file won't get them the entire scenario so that's why I thought maybe you were going to move things around and merge old files.

This all is very sensible, but if the authors are active, then I would let them decide about this ;).

Absolutely! I've only created download section redirects for old stuff who's authors are long gone. If someone is still here then I try to contact them to either get permission or talk them into making one themselves.

May as well ask now I guess.. @FoxAhead and @TheNamelessOne are you guys okay with having your brilliant respective Civ2UIA and ToTPP projects added to the CivFanatics Civ2 downloads area? But instead of putting a file there the download button merely redirects to the top post of your respective project threads? It's easy to make but if you don't wish to do it yourselves then I'm happy to do it for ya. If you don't want one made then that'll be respected too of course.

I think it'll probably be a mix.
For new to-be-made entries, I'll download and re-upload them. The files are all rather small, so no issue there. And as you said, if the files are split up, then this is also necessary.
For the rest, I actually can't see which links go to the legacy DB via some way, so I guess I might need to ask Thunderfall at some point to zip up everything what's in the legacy DB, remove it from the server, and then I can fix these entries...yeah... well... let's see :dunno:.

GONE! No luck with this one. Found his project forum thread but nothing useful there. Tried his website and download link in webarchive but no luck. His profile gives his steam account name so I could try msg'ing him there.

I successfully got in contact with @DukeCivStarcon regarding his missing scenario. He'd prefer not to reupload the original file as it was unfinished and incomplete. I did say that in the interests of preservation that we'd still love to restore the file no matter what condition it may have been in, but he would prefer to upload a better version one day and was fine with us deleting the old dead one. Authors preference trumps all, so you can scrub this one mate.

That was the only one in the list I couldn't originally resolve so I think that's everything you asked about all sorted now. :)

Oh and do you want me to go through the graphics folder and flag all the MGE content for transfer or have you got that covered?

Oh and I just noticed this MGE scifi scenario is still in the ToT area..
https://forums.civfanatics.com/resources/star-control-scenario-mge.27803/
It's titled and described as MGE, however I'm guessing the mixup happened because the original thread the download link goes to started as a ToT scenario by some other guy which was abandoned.. after that the thread became a place where Metropolis talked about and released his MGE version of the scenario. My download redirect takes you right to Metro's post with the MGE version so ignore anything else in the thread.

And this one is in the MGE area but its actually a ToT scenario..
https://forums.civfanatics.com/resources/how-few-remain-scenario-converted-for-tot.28263/
Guessing this mixup was caused by the download description as @gapetit copied and pasted the original authors readme file into the download description and didn't notice that the very first thing the original author says is "First of all, you MUST have MGE to play this scenario." which no longer applies to Gapetit's ToT conversion haha.

.

I have now linked all the Civ2 maps from the legacy database into the actual download database, and I've set the old legacy overviews to invisible.
I didn't re-upload any of the files, because apparently I can't automate that :cringe:, but linking I could. It wasn't possible either to automatically upload thumbnails, so that was a lot of fun too :cringe:.
There are 1-2 maps where I'm not sure if they're duplicated, but might just be different maps of the same world parts. Not too many anyways.

Another weekend I might go through all the rest which is left over. I dread it though lol :scared:.

Great work mate.. so many maps! :)

Hmm well if you're (understandably) dreading the scenario transfer and you can't automate re-uploads for all those split zip file scenarios then I definitely recommend holding off for a few weeks as I suspect a lot of the work I'm currently doing is going to overlap the work you're going to do (despite me using different sources) and there's no point in you wasting your time on scenarios I've already sorted out in advance. So when I'm done I'll put together a list of scenarios I've processed from other sources that I believe are duplicates of scenarios in the old CFC area, which you can then use to pluck them out of your 'to do' area and that should hopefully save you some messy work, especially with the lousy ones that require combing multiple zips and manually uploading. :)

Oh and speaking of me helping to save you some work, did you see my question earlier about the graphics folder? You only replied to my second post so I had a bad feeling you missed the first.

.

Oh, yeah, seems I didn't see that one.
Yes, if you can easily do that, then yes, would be appreciated :).

No worries mate, I'll get on with the graphics folder next! :)

In the meantime.. speaking of hopefully saving you some work. Below are all the scenarios I've processed from either the Atmonic Network backup or the Scenario League site or other sites that I have checked and confirmed that they appear to also exist in the CFC legacy collection you've been working through. These all have existing download pages made by me, Ansar, Colonel or someone else. Therefore you can strike these out from your to do list and not make new download pages for them, which should hopefully make the whole job look far more smaller and far less scary hopefully! Since I know you're looking at this from the backend I've painstakingly looked up all the file names in the CFC legacy download pages to make it easier for you to find and cross them off your to do list (but obviously not deleting them off server as it'll break legacy download links all over the place haha). Many of them were multi file scenarios which will no doubt give you a sigh of relief haha!

There are other download pages made by Ansar, Colonel and others that are not in my list below as they weren't of interest to me, but I think we already sorted them out back in this post so you're probably already on top of avoiding duplicating their stuff.

:hatsoff: thanks a lot.
I'll have a look at this at the weekend (hopefully).

No worries mate. Apparently I'm on fire today as I didn't expect to finish the graphics too but I have haha!

I've gone through all 76 submissions in the ToT graphics section, downloaded them, looked at their graphics files, worked out which version of Civ2 they were for and given them their allocations below.

In the end it was a bit tougher than expected as unfortunately a lot of people just dumped MGE 256 colour graphics into full 24bit 16mill colour BMP files making the graphics file format an insufficient criteria to conclusively work out the Civ2 version, however fortunately cell sizes increased for a lot of things in ToT so if the cell size were still small and I saw no colour changes when applying the MGE colour pallet to the BMP I knew for sure it was still a classic MGE graphic resource. As expected most in the list were old MGE stuff and need to be moved over to the MGE graphics area.

Here's the allocations displayed in order of how they appear in the graphics section. :)
