1940 Just me and my green friends - they are Dem. so purchasing cities is out. Used Fund. with the ever popular SofL and bought two other civs easily. My tech suffered and i am bummin when Green got the auto and took away my Leos.

Just switch back to Dem. and lets see if I can get some decent weapons to take him out. I got 70 year to do it.

darn, you guys are too fast! slow down a bit will ya? I haven't even started the game yet!

The terrain for this game is cool. It will suit many different playing styles and strategies. Wow, is this better than GOTM 1!

Only played for 45 minutes so far - up to 700 BCE, Monarchy, 8 cities and top civ (with those evil greenies not far behind).

Strangest thing... messages not long into game said:
"Greek civilization destroyed by the Zulus"
and immediately after...
"Greek civilization destroyed by Barbarians"
but then checking out the power graph at the end of the session, no sign of any Greeks! Just an orange blip showing early wipe-out and attributed to the Carthaginians. Why? C'est bizarre!

This is just a guess, but maybe the Carthaginians were regenerated as the greeks, but all they had was a settler and the settler got killed (first by Leowind & Co., then again by Barbie) before founding a city. Since they would have no population they might not show up on the powergraph, but it might still recognize the destruction of their civ when they die.

I've had the case in a different game where I came across the Spanish very early in the game with a horseman that I received from a hut. The horseman was able to take out the city and it gave the message:
"Spanish civilization destroyed by Americans"
And then right after it read:
"Spanish civilization destroyed by barbarians"

There was still a Spanish settler, but it was busy making improvements around the city and disappeared when I took the city.

In the end, the Aztecs ended up spawning and there was no mention of the Spanish in any powergraph. My only guess is that because the civilization respawned, the game could not give credit to me for killing the Spanish so had give "credit" to the barbarians. In this way, the game would not have to give credit for someone killing off more than 6 other civilizations - which can only be done if one color respawns.

Stormerne - your case seems especially strange - first from the fact that I think I had the English destroyed by the Zulus (not Greeks) very early - and there was no respawning. Secondly, I have no idea why the Carthaginians were given credit for taking out the Greeks. Perhaps because they were the respawn civ and in effect "took their place"? In theory, I would have thought that no civ would get the "credit" for killing them as it read barbarians.

This often happens if a civ just respawned and you destroy it's settler before they can build a city. I'm not sure why....but that's one of the causes.

BTW, How many Civs are in this game???
I'm in 1824 and I've only met Souix (Which I've killed), Zulus and Persians. Never mind. The Zulus killed the rest. Wow!! I'm closer to finishing than I thought. I've never won a game on Emperor before.

The Carthaginians weren't given credit. The Zulus and Barbarians were. What I meant was that the Powergraph had an orange line on it, a blip at the start showing some growth and then a drop to zero. This wiped out civ was labelled Carthaginians. No mention of Greeks. It's just possible that Carthaginians were a respawn of the Greeks and I missed the message about the Carthaginians being wiped out.

Go Corn go!!

The way to find out is to save your game and then RETIRE so that you see the powergraph. (You can always continue from the save later.) I don't think any of us believes this is cheating. Or build the UN or take over the city where it has been built and hit F3.

But to answer your question directly, there were six civs, including the Vikings that we play, at game start. In other words, one less than the normal max.

I haven't started mine yet either, Thunderfall. I just lurk around here a biot before I start. It's allways good to hear about some experiences.

Well my advice Håkan is to head over the hills and offer your settlers' services to the first civ you come across. That way your early finish bonus should be nearly x8!

I think I'm doing not too bad right now,
Matrix: I'm sorry Pedro, but if you'd like to talk about the map specifics, I think you'd better do it in the GoM3 log(possible spoilers) topic.
Damn Sioux. Took one of my cities, and keep sneak attacking me. They're worse than most Zulu tribes I encountered!!

I'm doing really well right now, even though I forgot to save it at 1 AD.

It's just past 1380, population's around 8.5 million, but I'm lacking in techs (mostly stayed in Monarchy, only using democracy/republic for growth). I've destroyed 1 civ and about to destroy 2 more. I have all the wonders (AI tried, but couldn't keep up). I have 44% right now.

But I haven't looked in the "spoiler" topic.

I know...it is so tempting to look at those spoilers.

It wasn't a serious remark. I think you have dignity enough.

B.t.w., Håkan, you can't quote a quote.

I haven't started game 3 yet, or looked in the spoiler thread, BUT... I've been thinking about this:

It might be OK to read spoilers, if you think about it. Any info you might get is hearsay, right? As long as no one downloads a screenshot, what you get is the Civ-world equivalent of Nostradamus' predictions, or reports from travelers of "A huge warlike empire called the Zulus". In other words, it might be fun to do.

And if we were to seed the spoiler threads with misinformation... Heh heh heh...

Oh now there's an idea! With as competetive as some of you guys are about this, we may as well get it over with and just call it the GOTM Lies and Deception topic!
wink.gif

I hope to come back to those "spoiler" topics when I am done and compare others' games to mine. Hopefully no one will be peeking to gain an advantage, or seeding them with misinformation.

I haven't peeked at the spoilers, Tim, but only to respect the views of other players. I assume no one else has either. But if they do--or do the save/reload trick for that matter--it doesn't really concern me at all (and NO, I don't do that either). I'll admit I'm a pretty competitive guy, but mostly against myself.

But what I meant is: I just can't can't see why reading the spoilers should be considered an unfair advantage (after a certain pooint in the game of course). An experienced player will have a pretty good idea of roughly where the big powers are, how strong they are, etc.

If I read a thread that told me: "Watch out for that big Mongol empire in the south; they had twenty cities by 1600 in my game," it wouldn't tell me any more than I could have guessed in time through playing. And in any case, different games develop differently, so if I were to give too much credence to anyone else's game, it might actually give me a disadvantage.

Besides, it would hardly affect our strategies, right? Are you really going to go out of your way to attack a civ halfway across the map early in the game just because someone said, "watch out for those guys" in a thread?
