I have a feeling I am doing something obvious but this is my first try downloading a GOTM. When I download it I can see it in my downloads file but when I click on the file to play it opens my warlords but I can not find the save file to begin. Am I missing something.

Thanks for any help.

Either move the file from the folder to which your browser downloads towards the folder where the CIV saves are stored (usually below documents\mygames\etc. ) or navigate towards your browser's download-folder after clicking "load game" in warlords assuming you want to play a warlords GOTM and not a BTS or Vanilla one. You also need to have the HoF / BUFFY-mod installed and correctly configured (see HoF page for the download and a manual) .

I am not sure what the problem is. If you download the file, and then double-click on it, it should open directly in the right version of the game and you should not need to load it once the game is running. You say that when you click on it, it opens WARLORDS, but your title says you are looking at a GOTM file, which should be for basic civ (warlords would be WOTM).

When you say "when I click on the file to play", are you clicking on the file you just downloaded? If so, what it that files name??

It is in Windows... I have downloaded "Civbotm30adventurer" figured I would load a past game so I could read the threads to try to get better at my game play. I double click on the downloaded game which was downloaded to my download folder, not in the Civ folders. When I open it, it auto opens Warlords but even when I go to my computer section in saved games I can't find it.

Will be away from computer for a few days so wont respond but am very thankful for all the advice and help.

Is it bad that I have never been a gamer but am now addicted to the Civ's?

Since Direct2Drive updated there online version of Civ IV, I've not been able to open saves directly. I have to open the save from within the game. So the point is that some online versions may have this issue. Also, the saves fail to get identified with the appropriate file type. While you can fix that issue, it will still not open the save directly, but at least will open the right version of Civ IV.

Make sure BUFFY is installed and follow these directions to make some adjustments so that BUFFY works correctly on Windows:

I was able to move the file from the downloads folder to the folder of saved games in the Beyond the Sword game. When I open the game and go to saved games I can see the file but when I try to play it says it is expecting version 301 not 302

Are you sure you tried to load the BOTM 30 save?

All BOTM games from BOTM 21 onwards used BtS version 3.1.9, with save version 302, and I have downloaded civ4botm30adventurer.CivBeyondSwordSsve and confirmed that it did use that version.

BOTM 01 to 20 were on BtS version 3.1.7, which used save version 301, so you would not be able to load those start files in your current version of BtS.

Hi. Taking advantage of the theme, I have another question.

I needed to reinstall the game. My previous game was a CD (I haven't it more). So, I installed the game through Steam. Initially only Civ 4 (Vanila). The Patch is 1.74, installed the HOF 1.74.004. I did the change in Steam/Properties/BETA. And the problem: when I try to open with the save file apears the message: "Failed to find Steam" (even searching for in the Steam folder)...

Another problem: I open the game, load the save file and apears the message in the picture. Clicking in OK the game is closed! What am I doing wrong?

Yes. The HOF MOD 1.74.004. Before the program try to open the game apears the message that the game will be restarted by needing the HOF MOD.

Have you applied the "Vista/Win7" fixes for permissions? They are given here.

You could also try running the Assets Checker to see what it thinks is wrong.

I follow the instructions abot changes in Steam in the same page for VISTA/WIN7 fixes and Assets Checker.

Have you applied the "Vista/Win7" fixes for permissions?

No. Being Steam (no Firaxis Game folder), what folder I have to open the Properties to make the changes?

About the Assets Checker. Here are the results:

Vanilla Files - Path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization IV

Vanilla: Assets\CvGameCoreDLL.dll,<-- Error: Files do not Match
Vanilla: PublicMaps\aDebugMap.py,<-- Error: Extra file

* * * Vanilla: 2 Errors have been found * * *

* * * 2 Errors have been found * * *

To run the Steam version you need to subscribe to the Beta Civ4 on Steam. Go back to the Hall of Fame page where you got the Assets Checker. Select the tab called Steam and follow the instructions there.

Sorry, I don't run the Windows or Steam versions, so I'm a bit slow on these fixes.

More info:

I did this modification in Civ4Config:

; Specify a Mod folder (Mods\Mesopotamia), '0' for none
Mod = Mods\HOF-1.74.004

The game starts normally with Hof 1.74.004. So, I chose a game with SINGLE PLAYER and CUSTOM GAME (with the option Lock Modified Assets). When tha map is created apears the message that the Hof Mod isn't installed!

This has already been done. Now the BETA inside Steam has the message: original_release_unsupported - Original Release - ...

Well, I hope other players can read my problem and help me. Thank you for now!

Have you put the mod in your \Documents\... path? It should go in the Steam path, as indicated in the red error message.

Yes, exactly in the same folder. It's my first time with Steam, and I will do some attempts to resolve this problem.

Before this Steam instalation, I tried to download the Patches 1.74 (Vanilla) and 2.13 (Warlord). When you click for downloading you are directed to GamersHell.com page. But, when the download is almost complete, the Chrome navigator warns that this page and the download are malicious. So I aborted and gave up to ask someone. Do you know (or other players) something about this? Why this alert appears? And finally, is it safe to accept the conclusion of these downloads?

Have you either installed Beyond the Sword or followed the GOTM instructions quoted below?
If you have not installed BtS, you will need to update the relevant DLL files in order to match the Locked Assets checks. These are available here.**

If you install Vanilla then Warlords and then BtS, you should automatically get the latest Vanilla and Warlords patches.

I can't say whether those downloads are safe or not, as I haven't tried them.

What I usually do when I don't trust the source of a download is try to find 3 download sites on the Internet and download the file from each of those sources. Then, compare the files against each other in a cmd window: fc filename1 filename2

If the files differ, you'll see a bunch of differences listed. If the files match, you'll see a message indicating as much.

If multiple download sources all seem to be offering up the same file, then you can at least be confident that you're equally as in trouble as anyone else on the Internet who installs such a file, and are likely safer than just trusting a random, suspicious download.

Also, you could try very politely Private Messaging Seraiel; I know that he has kindly gone out of his way to host a couple of Civ IV downloads for people in the past.

The links on some of the download-sources linked on the download-page of CFC are down or lead to infected sites, that's why I uploaded all important CIV-patches on my own webspace and host them for quite some time already, see here:
