Dragon Age 2 - Demo impressions

That is evident even in the demo. It effects Hawke's 'we go south' line at the end of the first bit, as well as his line after defeating Hayder (I believe). A nice little feature, I hope it makes dialogue slightly less bipolar.

Some of the changes are bad, some are good. However I won't be buying it till a mod/patch comes out that puts the tactical camera back in. Can't stand being stuck in zoomed out 3rd person.

I thought the demo was pretty cool. Combat was severely flawed in DA:O, and obviously a big area that Bioware targeted for improvement in DA2. It's likely to be too action-oriented for some folks, given that it's developed for consoles as well as PCs, but by and large I think the changes are going to be very well-received. I wish we'd gotten to see more of the game than just a few fights (inventory and gear especially), but overall I was pleased with what little we got to experience. I like the new leveling / skill interface a lot, that's a big improvement.

I think its probably going to be of a similar quality to Origins and ultimately have different strengths. I very much appreciate the changes though; too many designers are happy to just churn out sequels with little innovation.

Not all innovation is good though.

Indeed, and I'll be surprised if everything new in DA2 is too my liking. I'd still rather have a flawed game that is different to Origins than a flawed game that's the same as it.

Why did they remove it?

Because they have to do more work. Because its at a different angle than the regular camera they supposedly have to do a "lot" more work making sure the models of the buildings and stuff covers all possible areas of view.

Honestly I didn't see much of a difference between the viewing areas of either camera in DAO.

EDIT: http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/141/index/4376174/1

Afaik they won't release a toolset either >_< Or maybe after release, not sure.

EDIT: Also they barely have any DRM :D

Dragon Age 2 Physical & Digital PC/Mac DRM are as follows:
No disc check, you do not need the disc in drive to play.

No limit on the total number of PCs you can install the game on.

There is a limit to the number of unique/different PCs that can play the game within a time window (if online) [5 PCs in 24hrs].

After each new install there is a 1-time online check needed the next time you play, requiring a log in to your EA account to verify game ownership. If you are a member of these forums, you already have an EA account – just use the same email/password.

You can play offline thereafter - the game will NOT require any subsequent login checks. If online, a game ownership check happens each time you play.

Steam versions use Steam DRM, no other DRM is added, which means:
No disc check, it is used for digital game versions purchased from Steam only.

No limit to the total number of PCs you can install the game on.

There is a limit to the number of unique/different PCs that can play the game at any one time (if online) [1 PC].

Each install requires logging into your Steam account to verify game ownership.

You can play offline thereafter. If online, a game ownership check happens each time you play.

Steam pre-loads use Steam release control – you will not be able to play until the release day/time has passed for that region.

Dragon Age 2 Release Control (non-Steam versions)
Does not use securom.

It does not install anything to the PC.

Sole purpose is to check with a server to validate whether the game release date has passed or not.

It completely removes itself after the game release date has passed.

You will not be able to play until that date has passed.

Dates & times are set to the retail street date per country.

Common questions:

Does this apply to consoles?
No. This is applies to PC/Mac only.

What about Mac/Cider, does it use Securom?
Dragon Age: Origins for Mac/Cider used Securom. Dragon Age 2 for Mac/Cider will NOT use Securom and instead it will use the same non-Steam system listed above.

A PC review mentions Securom, what gives?
All EA preview & review game builds sent to press use Securom which is where the assumption came from. The Dragon Age 2 actual retail & download version of the game that you will play will not use Securom, it uses one of the systems above.

Very pleased with the demo. Combat is much more fun this time around and I am pretty stoked to play a deep rpg with action/adventure style combat. Seems like its gonna mesh well.

That being said I did try it on the Xbox, though I played the last one on my Pc.

So I read a thingy in the latest GI, the writer said it was the "dumb it down for consoles" kind of streamlining, not the one where they get rid of useless clutter. I HATE CONSOLE RPGERS.

Anyway, I have lost faith in Bioware sequels after DA2, because 3 will probably be even worse. I now need a replacement PC elitist RPG gaming company, unless Bioware gets some sense knocked into them (which will probably mean they would no longer be a part of EA. While this would be awesome, it's as likely as ice pigs flying in hell). Any suggestions?

You lost faith in an entire company's products because of a demo.

...

The more I heard about Dragon Age 2 the less I cared.
More ""action oriented", no zooming out, direct control, "we want to attract the call of duty crowd"...
Well, Mass Effect 2 was a good example how to streamline a game without dumbing it down.
My thoughts, word for word.
Unlike DAO that I bought immediately, I'm certainly going to wait and see how this one turns out.
PC Gamer gives it 94 (the game, no the demo). "The best RPG combat ever". These should be taken with a grain of salt obviously.

Online reviews are piece of crap that nobody should ever base an opinion on.

Ah the Kane and Lynch incident, soon to be the Godwin's law of game review discussions.

That being said, yeah, review sites are crap. The discussions in this thread were more useful to me than any review I'd read anywhere else. I actually never read reviews anywhere anymore, except by peers on this board, and stuff like gamefaqs user reviews and metacritic user reviews. Always user reviews when I feel I can trust them.

That makes little sense because the original was already not complicated and sold very well no the consoles.

DAO was less simplified, though. There was enough in it to make me feel good and nerdy inside. I'm saying if DA gets any more simplified it's going to just be a hack'n'slash.

No, it's also what they did to Mass Effect 2. Still a good game, but I don't feel comfortable by calling Bioware games RPGs anymore.

And for the record, it was what the GI guy wrote in the magazine, not online.
