Gosh, this thread has come alive, does it not?

I have nothing new to post yet (awfully busy these days), but I'll contribute by suggesting some software I have recently found:

Dear fellow artists, meet The Gimp. This is, much like open office, an open source project which emulates virtually all utilities of Photoshop, under a price you absolutely can't beat - it's altogether free of charge!

So, aspiring artists, if you, like me, have issues with software piracy, and don't work with art making paying for PS a no-no, give Gimp a shot. Heck, browsing the program forums, i've seen plenty testimonials saying that except for script writing, there is no real actual difference except interface, and even for that, you cann seek the "Gimp Shop", which emulates Photoshop's screen.

Here are some snapshots (under linux, but works a-ok in windows):

If you guys are already familiar with it, than maybe you can help me out, I'm having trouble configuring some of the features of the my wacom on it. ;)

Regards :).

You know that means we'll be expecting civ3 units from you, no ?

:mischief:

Great stuff guys :)

Here's the detailed pic I mentioned before. I worked on this for 15 hours. If you don't like it, I don't wanna hear about it ;). The scanner kinda screws up most of the details. Pilot drawing pens, a4 paper.

Short story:

The prototype of a cybernetic war machine has gone out of control. In the test phase it was accidentally contaminated with a experimental biological weapon, a flesh eating bacteria. The proto went berserk since it's sensors detect a continuos attack. The proto is able to regenerate and has been programmed to keep itself functional, so it is now running amok absorbing biological material and metallic alloys to power it's regeneration.

You are a very skilled drawing artist, and the forms are quite well-presented. Individually all of the forms are well-drawn, the prototype, the car, the human, the factory, the roadway and the environment around them.
This image, though, again has the problem of lack of perspective; there seems to be no depth; the man being held by the monstrous being seems to be just another collection of lines and not much more. Every bit of the painting has the exact same intensity, and so it becomes somewhat static. Moreover the detail in the numerous parts of the protagonist of the painting again seems to be a bit of an amalgam, with nothing functioning as the central image, where attention would be drawn to. Every part of it seems to be struggling for the same bit of attention, and this is not helping it impress as much as it could have had. This is something that children in drawing classes in elementary do all of the time; give the same amount of detail to all objects, and so every object is fucntioning as one seeking equal attention, thus making a planned dynamic of the painting impossible.

I like your work, so i hope you do not take these as negative comments :) I would like to see more of it in the future :)

Ok, this is a WIP I'm making now, my first actual test of the GIMP. obviously, it still has a lot to be done before ready, and this time I'm using a different technique than my usual (I'm keeping the outlining visible); still, worth a post. Should be ready in a few days, I expect.

The titlle of the drawing will be "misschief".

Tykinruoka, that is an excellent drawing...Reminds me of the illustrations in old RPG books from the 1980s!

:)

FredLC, nice work :)
Since this is called "mischief" and you have some cyclopai as well, it is strange that the main character looks like that since one would expect him to be Odysseus.
Is this part of a larger work, with many more illustrations, or a single painting?

edit: you could also do an illustration of the Odyssey, using just Polyphemus, since the other cyclopai never came into contact with Odysseus. There are so many images in that chapter of the Odyssey; the hurling of the large rock at the ship, the blinding of Polyphemus, his cries and shouts to his countrymen, the devouring of the greek soldiers :)

Well, here's my third contribution to this thread. I took few moments more to draw this one (I draw much but not good quality...:p ) It's a warrior-witch from a fantasy story that I'm writing. ;) It's supposed to appear female without making her overtly sexy, since I dislike the way fantasy characters are often depicted as so physically superb.

I like the pose, and an interesting idea too!
I would like to hear more of your world, if you are at liberty to say?

PS
I don't mind attractive people in fantasy, as long as they are also flawed people also. I mostly dislike
'Pamela Anderson-style' babes in fantasy, in that a skinny little chick could swing around a massive blade.

That is why I tend to create warrior females that look as if they are strong.
Because in a sword-clashing world, wimps don't last too long!

:D

Ah, this is not about the odyssey. This is a single painting only, but my choice of cyclops is incidental. I actually started this to revive a painting called faun of my art galleries. I wanted more action this time, so I decided that he would be stealing something from someone. Originally I meant to have a giant, laying on a stone bed, barely awoke, but I figured a chase would be more interesting, and after thinking a bit on it, I though two cyclops would fit the angle better than the giant if they were to stand up.

Thanks. :)

Of course I am.:) 80% of it is still inside my head, I have only written a skeletal draft.

It's a mix of Tolkien like fantasy, but with plenty of my own ideas and more of a Byzantine/Romano-classical world instead of kingdoms and knights. Edit: the two other drawings are part of it too.

PS

'Pamela Anderson-style' babes in fantasy,

Yes, I dislike the "soft" looking Pamela look too. I especially dislike having warrior ladies with huge breasts... I mean, ask any dancer, having a q-cup will seriously hamper nimble moves. Instead, if you want to make them attractive, what about drawing pert breats. :p

in that a skinny little chick could swing around a massive blade.

Actually, the second thing I hate is the absurd equippement in many fantasy worlds. For example, two handed sword is very light and thin, and plate is usually 2-3mm(ish) thick, not four centimeters. So, the equippement is not usually that heavy, but of course, fighting requires fitness.

:)

One thing to remember, is that a different world might have very light alloys in comparison to steel in our world.

Although, I find mega swords a bit crazy too...I prefer katana-style blades on my characters...

Depends on the cultures that are depicted.

...

Btw, curt, the that previous pic you posted is great. What's with you and that satanic iconography?:p

I like that wicked flower on her belt

Wow, nice drawing Chukchi Husky!

Great job!
