One thing I just noticed though - I don't think British ships used that flag for shipping, though I could be completely wrong. At the very least, it would be more likely to be using the Union Jack than the English cross.

But that's just me being nit-picky

You are correct. The union jack would occupy the white slot in the upper corner. So it's actually a composition of both flags. I could fix the image but...
