Well, for what its worth, I wouldn't consider myself a tea addict as I can get by without it (and often do on the weekends), but I certainly do enjoy 1-3 cups of tea a day on most work days. If I get to 4+ cups a day, I can notice the overcaffeination - and occasionally at lesser amounts - but generally a mid-length walk and putting the breaks on the tea will do to return me to normalcy if I am noticing that I've had a little too much tea for one day.
However, during the day, I'm pretty cautious with sugar. Never add it to tea; it tastes good enough without, so why bother? And very rarely have something sweet early in the day, in main part because I don't desire it, likely out of habit. In the evening, perhaps something sweet, depends on the night. Generally, though? Yes, we probably do have a lot of sugar addicts... and I've noticed the proclivity for having sugar to beget having more sugar in the future in myself at times, as well. Generally, sooner or later I run out of sweet things, and break that habit, but for those a bit more consistent in their grocery shopping habits, I could see how this could easily continue.
