[DRN-001] BtS Any Which Way You Can

Ah, the HRE hasn't adopted Slavery. That is good news. It means Charlie won't be able to whip up an additional defender. In that case there might well be only 2 archers in Aachen. Strangely the HRE have no religion despite starting with Mysticism, so there are two other civs out there that managed to get there first.

Inherited Turn (1750 BC) - I set our espionage all on Charlie for the time being. We need to know what he's got. I cannot trust the foreign relations screen for the time being.

Turn 1 (1725 BC) - A tragic mining accident in Ethiopia. Not sure how that's hurt Yaqob, though. Chariots are moving to the staging area.

Turn 2 (1700 BC) - Hammurabi has land beyond the northern sea. "May we all live long and prosper". Hmm. Hammurabi is the founder of Buddhism.

Turn 3 (1675 BC) - Pottery learned. Masonry begun for either the great wall, or the pyramids. Horseback Riding would take too long. Chariot stack in place.

Turn 4 (1650 BC) - War declared on the Holy Roman Empire. He has only one Archer stationed in Aachen!

WAR.jpg

Turn 5 (1625 BC) - Aachen captured. There is another city to the northeast.

Turn 6 (1600 BC) - Washington begins another chariot. All but one of our remaining chariots sortie along the road to the northeast of Aachen. Prague found. Warriors garrison. I will attempt to take it next round.

PRAGUE.jpg

Turn 7 (1575 BC) - Prague destroyed! We have captured a Worker. The Holy Roman Empire is destroyed!

AFTERMATH.jpg

Notice the Babylonian work boat. I set our Espionage higher against Hammurabi over the Russians and the Ethiopians. We have no EP points against them.

Turn 8 (1550 BC) - Stonehenge built elsewhere. Barbarian warriors north of where Prague used to be. I escort the worker to Aachen. Chariot is no longer needed in Washington. I switch to Granary and send a worker to cottage-chop it. Our fresh chariot from Aachen returns to the ruins of Prague to hunt barbarians and sentry the spot for a future(?) city.

CHARIOT.jpg

Turn 9 (1525 BC) - Masonry discovered. Granary begun in New York. I switch Washington from Granary to Great Wall for the chops. The worker from Prague hides in Aachen until the borders pop. I briefly consider sending our chariot after the barbarian warrior, but decide against it. Archer fortified in New York.

Turn 10 (1500 BC) - Aachen border pop. Aachen worker sent to cottage-chop a settler to refound Prague.

Turn 11 (1475 BC) - Number One in Score, Number Two in Civilization size behind Catherine.

NUMBERTWO.jpg

Barb Warriors southeast of Washington. Our warriors are on sentry. I am sending back one Chariot from Aachen to support.

BARBS.jpg

Turn 12 (1450 BC) - Nothing much. We now have espionage superiority over Hammurabi. I'm switching focus back to Catherine. She is the second most powerful in the known world. It is interesting to note that we earned a -1 penalty in our relations with Hammurabi for declaring war on Charlie

Turn 13 (1425 BC) - Nothing happens.

Turn 14 (1400 BC) - New York's borders have expanded. We now have sheep to hook up.

Turn 15 (1375 BC) - A plague of locusts have destroyed our pig pasture east of Washington. Our two workers in the vicinity will be finished with their cottages in 4 and 5 turns respectively.

Three things to note:

To the west of us, as you're aware is another stretch of land. From what our work boat has seen so far, this area is actually pretty fertile.

NICELAND.jpg

It is my belief that this island is currently uninhabited -- I have seen barbarians on the coast.

We need to expand before others can take our resources. Shown below is a number of locations for additional cities. I am already in the process of building a Settler to refound Prague. However, we need to link our eastern and western territories together. Below is a series of spots for potential cities.

CITIES.jpg

Finally, our capital is well on its way to completing The Great Wall. Should our next player choose to continue this pursuit, I would suggest the Great Spy that spawns from its completion be used as a super specialist to get a leg up on our neighbors.

Finally, Writing will be complete in one turn.

And I also forgot to rename Aachen.

HERE is our save.

At this time, I think we need to build a navy. One, to gain control of the large island off our coast. Two, to strike Hammurabi as soon as possible. From the civilization size notice, his current score, and the fact that he is the founder of a religion make him out to be a juicy target. The money we can earn from his holy city will be useful in the long run. If we can ensure the Apostolic Palace is Buddhist, then we can either build a power bloc, or keep someone else from achieving an early diplomatic victory.

The Holy Roman Empire is destroyed!

:rotfl:

The Better AI doesn't always get it right.

Got it. Waiting for further comments, but it seems that metals are our priority, so I will try and settle the copper-clams-marble spot. It doubles as a blocking city so that we have the peninsula all to ourselves. After that we need a proper commerce city.

We might well have to found cities on the uninhabited island to the NW, since our own peninsula is pretty devoid of anything but silk.

As for the AIs, I'd rather take out Cathy than anyone else. Hammurabi with his bowmen would be an annoying opponent now, but Cathy in 3000 years will be even more annoying.

Maybe we should be aiming to consolidate atm, get copper city built then colonise our peninsula before looking for further targets.
We've got plenty of time before Cat gets cossacks.

Wow, nice turnset Doronron. And very nice write up.

I just checked the save. I agree that Copper Marble is the next site to get. I would move it 1 west to get it on the coast and work the clams. That's a very good production city but a lack of food will stifle it.

That takes the clams from the clam corn city. So I would move that 1 south and 2 west. Then you get fish and corn in the fat cross, and can work a plains hill and desert hill. It doesn't waste the fish tile.

It looks like Aachen will make a very nice GP farm. We should prioritize a library there and run some scientists. That will leverage our Philosophical trait.

Sheep need to be pastured, pigs need to be re-pastured. And I bet there's seafood in the south fog of war.

newdotmap.jpg

Pigswill, the only spot on your dot map I'm mildly concerned with is the location for the copper city, but I think I understand as you seem to want the rest of the known northern resources to fall into another planned city's BFC.

By expansion, I meant consolidation. I think the primary city spots should be the ones following the northern coast to link up Aachen with Washington, and the one spot to reclaim the territory unfortunately lost in sacking size one Prague.

As soon as that is done, we must move fast on that large island to our west. In a few thousand years, cities settled there could very well be the heart of our empire.

NOTE: I understand that overseas cities now incur a colony maintenance fee. I think, though, that since this island is only one tile off our coast, it might not be considered overseas, and incur no colony penalty.

Kinda wish I knew what to do with the nasty terrain along our southern border, though. It's nothing but a barbarian spawn point at the moment.

I think if you can get there in a Galleon you don't get the penalty. It's not inter continental. Then people who play archipelago maps would be in serious trouble. But if, say, you built 3 Gorges Dam in Washington, you wouldn't get power in cities on that island. At least that's how it worked in the last big & small map I played.

We should definitely settle some cities up there. We'll need sailing, that can be our next tech. Maybe an Oracle slingshot if we get the marble hooked up? Or is it too late for that? We'll need meditation and priesthood for that. And masonry for the marble. That techs us toward monarchy/code of laws, both are good for expanding your empire.

Pigswill's dotmap:

Copper city: It looks like you want to split the copper/marble into 2 cities. I like the idea of just using 1, with 1 city we get copper, marble, and block off our southern peninsula all in one. We could move the pigs/sugar city north but I see the AI beating us there since we have a lot of other spots to settle too.

Your pig/corn city 5 east of Washington: I like mine better, just because it doesn't waste the fish, it's more food but less land, we can save the pigs for another city, and run specialists with the food surplus

Pigs/Silk/Fish: looks good

Horse/Corn, looks better, it's on the coast.

A note about espionage; try to make sure we can see everyone's demographics at least, it's very hard to keep tabs on what the AIs are doing otherwise. Weights assigned accordingly. Some kind soul has filled our build queues beforehand so I guess I'll be mostly pressing ENTER for now. There's also some helpful sign spam floating around.

I take the liberty of moving the copper city spot 1SW because I'm the King. :king: It also gains more seafood from the start, avoids overlap, and has no desert in the BFC. With the GW in place copper is not that urgent. Aachen is also renamed by request, unfortunately the Americans aren't very good at French spelling. After that bit of value added management I press ENTER.

Turn 1: Writing is in, moving on to Meditation. It's probably too late for The Oracle, but the path to CoL is always good. Vermin ruin the food stores in Axe-la-Chapelle.

IBT: I decline Hammurabi's OB since I don't want him exploring our lands yet.

Turn 2: Agree OB with Catherine. Better make friends with her for now.

Turn 4: New York starts a work boat because we'll need one anyway.

Turn 6: Meditation is done and so is the GWall. A barb archer tries to ambush our settler.

ambushey1.jpg

Turn 9: Boston founded on the hilltop.

Turn 10: We have Priesthood, start Oracle in Washington. 15 turns, doesn't look promising. Maybe if I chop heavily we can make it. Now researching Sailing.

civ4screenshot0047ei8.jpg

Turn 15: Our scouting chariot runs into a bit of a situation. I set the work boat to sail from New York to Boston (it's a longer trip than you'd imagine). Sailing is done next turn. It appears the continent to the NW is in fact larger than ours, and it houses Catherine for one.

civ4screenshot0050qz5.jpg

civ4screenshot0048hb7.jpg

Aachen is also renamed by request, unfortunately the Americans aren't very good at French spelling [...] Axe-la-Chapelle.

Then, if you want its correct, present French name, it is : AIX-la-Chapelle. Even though I am of French descent and am really not an Americanophile, I suggest that we rename that city with a USA appellation :

1. "Axe-la-Chapelle" is too long ;
2. It would be more coherent to have an American name for our USA civ.

Unless you guys object, I shall do that on my turn (soon) -- if njorls doesn't do it first.

Thanks, azaris!

We seem to have our own continent with iron in the north. Cathy may be(?) in the same situation, but I've already made a mistake regarding that island, so... Hammurabi also seems isolated, but on a land mass smaller still.

Also, I notice our income is dropping faster. Should we drop the science slider a bit, or do we need to continue pushing?

Got it, will play and post tonight. Haven't checked the save, only screenshots.

I'd drop the slider a bit. You should always have at least 20 gold in case of a slave revolt or other happy 'occurences'.

The Oracle might be doable if we're 1/4 the way there at 1000 BC.

I'm thinking of researching Monarchy and taking a CoL slingshot.
And founding Pigs/Silk/Fish and get it started as a commerce city.
Thoughts?

Sounds good, njorls. I think for now we need to ease back a bit on the tech and rebuild our reserves. Getting some decent cities up and running is paramount for our commerce. Filling in our peninsula and colonizing up to that iron is a necessity. Can we do that without breaking our economic backs, though?

Overall strategy: Boost the economy, try and finish a library in Chapelle and 2 science specialists. Research Monarchy and take Code of Laws off Oracle.

Turn 0, (turn 120 at start), 1000 BC: Sent out Warriors behind the Great Wall to fog bust. Adjust research slider to 60% for -2 gpt. Oracle at 10 turns. Yup, that Chariot is surrounded. Time to circle the wagons. Signed OB with Hammurabi and Zara. Grabbed some popcorn and watched the big fight up north.

Turn 1: He wins!

barbsowned0000.jpg

Workboat done in Chapelle. Not sure what this is needed for. Will send it south for when Fish/Pig/Silk city is founded. Started a library. Sailing finished, set research to Monarchy. It's 27 turns. Surviving chariot gets promoted to Medic II. With a great general, he should be able to get to level 6. Heal him up to full as he's valuable now. Workers chops both finish. Oracle at 5 turns.

Turn 2: Move 1 worker to sheep, start cottage with the other. Chapelle will grow unhappy in 4 turns. The last whipping will wear off by then though.

Turn 5: Brennus contacted by our wandering workboat. He founded Hinduism and agreed to open borders. Chariot starts heading home.

Turn 6: The Oracle is completed, I took Code of Laws.

Oracle0000.jpg

Confuscianism founded in New York

Confucianism0000.jpg

New York's fishing boat arrived at Boston and improved the clams.

Lighthouse started in Washington, I don't think we need another archer.

Borders pop on Chapelle, man that city has a lot of food.

Turn 8: Confuscianism spreads to Washington on the turn Missionary gets there. Missionary sent towards Chapelle.

Turn 9: Medic chariot attacked by Archer in Jungle. Survives, taken down to 2.9. Set to rest.
Library whipped in Chapelle.

Turn 10: Worker started in Chapelle. Cottage finished in Chapelle, worker starts on mine. 2 scientists hired in Chapelle, takes Monarchy from 12 turns down to 10 turns.

Turn 14: Lighthouse done in Washington. Settler started, suggest going to city near fish/pig/silk. Washington and Chapelle are near their happy limit so I convert to Confucianism.

Turn 15: Zara will trade Alphabet for Code of Laws. It seems like a good trade but since it's a shared turn I decided to wait. The next player can make it if they think it's a good idea, I would. Noone else has Alphabet so we may be able to get something for it.

Great person done in 3 turns, it's 72% spy, 27% prophet. Prophet can make a shrine, not sure what do do with the spy. A great age this early won't do much.

Our home sweet home:

southern0000.jpg

Our northern continent:

northern0000.jpg

The rest of the world:

other0000.jpg

It kind of looks like a doughnut, a small island surrounded by a large continent. Not sure if we can get anything here as we have more pressing issues at home.

njorls posted his save at 07:47 (my time). I got it at 08:17.

EDIT > 09:35. Finished. Give me a few minutes to compose the analysis.

T. 135 (625 BC), njorls's last turn. He left me :

-- 41 gold (minus 1 per turn at 60% research)
-- Monarchy being researched
-- A Settler being produced at Washington
-- Barracks being produced at New York
-- Granary being produced at Boston
-- Worker being produced at ALC

T. 136 (600 BC) :

136.1 > Renamed "Axe-la-Chapelle" to Chicago !
136.2 > Concentrated 4 chariots between Boston & Chicago, for defense of northern borders.
136.3 > Sent 3 foot-units to garrison Boston & Chicago (instead of chariots).

T. 137 (575 BC) : Nothing special.

T. 138 (550 BC) :

138.1 > Worker started by njorls finished at Chicago.
138.2 > I set production at Confucian Monastery (+2 culture, +10% research). It will not take a lot of time if I tinker with the citizens for extra production.
138.3 > A Great Prophet is born in Washington. I set him up as an internal super-specialist because we need his +5 gold !

T. 139 (525 BC) :

139.1 > Thanks to the super-specialist, we now have +2 gold/turn at 60% research (instead of the -1 at the end of T. 135).
139.2 > The boat which had been sent as a scout in the NW has discovered the Brennus capital of Bibracte (7 pop).
139.3 > Chicago has reached 6 pop.

T. 140 (500 BC) : Barracks completed at New York. I go for Library (+2 culture, +25% research).

T. 141 (485 BC : we are starting to move by 15-year increments) : Nothing special.

T. 142 (470 BC) : Settler finished in Washington. I send him to the far-north, to the old Prague location (as suggested).

T. 143 (455 BC) : Monarchy discovered. I select Polytheism for only one reason : it is by far the quickest to research (my successor will consequently have the freedom to choose something deeper on his very first turn of play!).

T. 144 (440 BC) : New York expands its borders.

T. 145 (425 BC) : A message announces that our civ has reached ½ million pop.

T. 146 (410 BC) : Having brought a chariot from Washington, a 5-chariot task-force now defends between Boston & Chicago.

T. 147 (395 BC) : Our settlers found Philadelphia on the ruins of Prague ! Production set at Archers.

T. 148 (380 BC) : Boston has finished its granary. Production set for a library.

T. 149 (365 BC) : Scout boat discovers an Ethiopian (green) town, which blocks its maritime path. It must go back south.

T. 150 (350 BC), my 15th and last turn :

150.1 > Library finished in Washington. I go for a Confucian Monastery (fast).
150.2 > Our 5 chariots defeat a barbarian warrior : no losses! I set them to fortify/heal (4 turns).
150.3 > RESEARCH IS TEMPORARILY AT 10% to get a +19 gold profit-surge, since this is Polytheism's last turn of research. RESET AT turn 151 !

Njorls left me 41 gold, and I'm leaving pigswill a 95-gold treasury (at the beginning of T. 151).

10:15 PM > HERE IT IS : http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/66970/MDR_BC-0350.CivBeyondSwordSave

Good job snagging the Oracle, CoL, and getting us a religion! Let's see if we can get Cathy and Yaqob to go Confucian. Wherever you guys want to drop the settler, go for it. The Pig/Fish/Silk spot will certainly cut down on the barbs to the south. Iron/Pig/Wheat looks real tempting, but too far out of the way for the moment. We need to backfill, I guess.

If we get a great spy, I suggest settling him as a great spy specialist in one of our towns. He'll provide +3 science beakers and +12 espionage points. Later Great Spies (if any are born) should possibly get settled in the same town, with Scotland Yard built there, as well for an additional 100% espionage boost out of that location.
