[DRN-001] BtS Any Which Way You Can

You can certainly win a space race with only ten cities on Prince. In fact, I've done it myself. However, the bigger the better, so a takeover of Hammurabi's cities sounds like a plan. I still think we should build the Apostolic palace though.

We were one of the last civs to pick up theology so there's no guarantee of getting AP. At least you get a refund for incomplete wonders.

We'd certainly be more comfortable with more cities. However we have a tech lead and a bunch of newly settled cities. Its only 1100 ad in the game so we could spend a couple of sets researching and consolidating before we consider our next expansion, probably at Hammurabi's expense.

Pigswill was right about the AP. I tried, and lost it. Got 314 gold though. I concentrated on infrastructure, but upgraded the navy and started some military builds as well.

1120 Took Astronomy as free Liberalism technology to enable more trade and galleons for our future invasion fleet. Researched nationalism for drafting and Taj Mahal.
1150 Zara Yaqob makes an unreasonable demand which I refuse.

A settler was build in Philadelphia, and seeing no immediate need I parked him there. Our ships have proved that the world is round.
1160 Lucky break in Atlanta
yena02.jpg

1190 Sitting Bull makes threats, and I cave in (remember to cancel this deal later).
yena03.jpg

We get nationalism, and I start Printing Press to improve the economy.
1200 Yet another Great Artist is born in Washington  I use him to lightbulb Divine Right.
1220 Atlanta is now the Holy City for Islam, research on Printing Press resumed.
1230 Washington bags the Shwedagon Pagoda

And the save

Suggestions for the next player(s):
1. I started Heroic Epic in Washington, but perhaps it is more important to build Taj Mahal first.
2. It is a good time to change civics now that both nationalism and liberalism are in. I suggest starting a golden age to change without anarchy.
3. Until gunpowder has been research it is possible to draft macemen. Something to keep in mind if we decide to invade someone.

I read in ALC thread that if we get Taj Mahal during a golden age the golden age is doubled in duration. A GA would get Taj built faster so that could be the way to go.
Research wise I'm not so sure. Number of decent options available. Head for democracy? Head for rifles? Go for chemistry and build up a navy?

 at Sorceresss.

I got the save. Let me take a look at it tonight or tomorrow. I should have my turnset done before Monday. Privateers, from what I've seen, are not only fun, but very handy if we can get some good trade routes blockaded.

-----

Having looked at the save, this is what I think I will do. I will use some of our great people to trigger a Golden Age. I will then switch Washington from Heroic Epic to Taj Mahal. I will switch civics as Yena has suggested above. No one has our religion, so Free Religion it is! I will beeline to Democracy for the Jail and the Security Bureau. One of our towns will be selected as a Spy Capital, and it will build all the espionage related buildings available to concentrate Spy Specialists. Once Democracy is discovered, I will backfill Guilds and Banking. From there, not so sure. Reading up on Suistil's (sp?) BtS Russia game, his Privateers are acting as a major boon to his income and providing some much needed XP for Great General generation.

Any suggestions?

If we're planning on going to war soonish then chemistry/milsci/steel is a good path. If we're not in such a hurry we might be better to follow democracy path. I'd prefer going for emancipation based cottage spam to establish a significant tech lead and go for war later on.

I agree with Pigswill. Yena, I will take our settler and drop him on the stone island during my turnset. I should get to it sometime after lunch.

Also, do any of you see a good place to use one of our great artists for a culture bomb? It might be a good idea to start pressuring one of Hammurabi's cities in the north.

Inherited Turn (1240 AD) - I take a look at our map, and get things started. I put our Settler on the Galleon and send him to the Stone island.

Turn 1 (1250 AD) - Brennus adopts Hereditary Rule. The borders of Boston have expanded. Washington switches from Heroic Epic to Taj Mahal. I begin our golden age. Civics switched to Nationhood and Free Religion (for the Espionage and the Science boost respectively.

Turn 2 (1255 AD) - Printing Press discovered. I begin research on Constitution. Iron hooked up.

Brennus constructs the Hagia Sophia.

I upgrade our Archers to Longbowmen. Barbarians found on the island north of Stone Island.

MOREBARBS.jpg

I send one of our Galleons to the Miami in response. Perhaps we can capture this town for our own...

Turn 3 (1260 AD) - Catherine births a Great Scientist. The celts have a nice little event involving Jade.

Turn 4 (1265 AD) - Catherine wants Engineering. I tell her no.

ENGINEERING.jpg

She's still Pleased.

The Celts gain a Great Engineer, presumably through a Forge Event in Bibracte. One Galleon loaded for the assault on the Barbarians.

Turn 5 (1270 AD) -Enrico Fermi, Boy Genius, born in Chicago.

Brennus constructs the Chichen Itza. This combined with the Statue of Zeus is going to hurt.

Houston Founded.

HOUSTON.jpg

Notice the Barbarian Galley to the south! I sink it with our Caravel.

Turn 6 (1275 AD) - Brennus comes asking for Drama. I give it to him.

DRAMA.jpg

This brings him up to Pleased.

Sitting Bull comes asking to trade World Maps.

WORLDMAP.jpg

Sure.

Turn 7 (1280 AD) - Washington's borders have expanded. Bactrian Destroyed. I ready the Galleons to send our troops south.

Turn 8 (1285 AD) - Constitution discovered. I begin research on Democracy.

Turn 9 (1290 AD) - Volcanic Eruption near Gergovia. The The Celtic city was spared, though. I bivouac our troops in Houston. I have my sights set on the Barbarian City of Hsung-Nu as a possible future colony.

HSUNG-NU.jpg

Turn 10 (1295 AD) - Uni in Philly. Settler begun.

Turn 11 (1300 AD) - Houston's forces are almost ready to set sail. Workers are running out of things to do. I'll probably send a few Houston's way. We can now see what everyone else is researching.

Turn 12 (1305 AD) - Brennus adopts Vassalage and Caste System. San Francisco begins work on a Jail.

Turn 13 (1310 AD) - Hammurabi births a Great Prophet. Houston's troops head south for Hsung-Nu.

Turn 14 (1315 AD) - Sitting Bull adopts Bureaucracy. Troops land north of Hsung-Nu.

Turn 15 (1320 AD) - Mining accident in Russia. Babylon gets a cache of rare writings. Hsung-Nu captured for the loss of our Catapults. Renamed Honolulu.

Taj Mahal next turn. Democracy next turn. Our Golden Age ends next turn.

Atlanta suffers a -1 happy. Aqueduct in six turns.

Yaqob, Cathy, and Brennus are Pleased towards us. Hammurabi is annoyed. Sitting Bull is Cautious. Brennus and Cathy love each other. Hammurabi and Yaqob love each other. Nobody cares much about Sitting Bull. Our Sugar deal with Sitting Bull will cancel next turn. Hammurabi is catching up in Espionage.

I suggest we settle Honolulu island and Ivory island. Turn them both into vassal colonies.

HERE is the save.

Houston should have been placed 1 tile north. Then it would be able to work all 3 seafood tiles.

Honolulu wasn't placed that well by the barbs, 2N would have been able to work both fish.

Hope I'm not being too negative, just pointing out what I think.

The other island looks interesting with all the ivory though. It might be a pretty big island or there could be more.

If you'll look at Houston, you'll notice a lot of high commerce tiles. That's what I was aiming for instead of the clam. Honolulu placed where it is will give us extra room for another city or two that we can turn over to a vassal colony.

Got it for later today.

We seem to be forging ahead still, but I would advice some caution. Hammurabi could pull off a sneak amphibious attack against one of our coastal cities protected by cardboard cutouts and terracotta solders. Recommend we get city visibility to see if he starts building an invasion fleet.

If I can settle another city on Hawaii, do we want to start a colony or not? It will be lead by either Roosevelt or Washington. Apart from the lowered maintenance costs, what are the benefits here? One reason I can think of is that colonies make for very good trade routes and later corporation targets.

I like to give my vassals all my tech as soon as I get it, while others never give their vassals anything out of fear they'll start trading with the AIs. I just don't see the point of having a colony stuck in the middle ages.

Turn 0: I queue up some LBs so we won't get caught with our pants down. EPs directed at Hammurabi so we can see inside his cities.

IBT: Refuse to trade maps with Brennus.

Turn 1: Democracy -> Guilds. Our Golden Age ends and begins again with Taj Mahal. Sending out a settler party to create a colony. Sell Aesthetics to Cathy for 60 gold since she's 2 turns away from discovering it. Switch back to Bureaucracy to get Washinton pumping out :hammers: during the Golden Ages.

Turn 2: Washington finishes HE, I order another settler. I build a farm chain to Boston to help it grow and put those plains to use.

Turn 3: More settlers land on Hawaii.

Turn 4: Guilds -> Gunpowder. Pearl City founded on Hawaii. To save money we grant independence to Hawaii, placing Roosevelt in charge.

civ4screenshot0107nw4.jpg

I ask him to adopt Free Religion so he doesn't make any instant religious enemies (otherwise he would adopt Taoism next turn). There is a bug in the espionage system. Any newly founded colonies inherit their master's EPs toward rival civs, but has 0 EP against it by anyone else. That means Roosevelt for example is 0/1239 against Hammurabi. If we gifted him some spies and caravels he could go to town on Hammurabi. Now our cashflow is nicely in the green again and we have a new overseas trading partner.

Turn 5: Boston -> Forge, Washington -> Statue of Liberty, Philly -> grocer, Seattle -> lighthouse. We pop another great artist. :dunno: I lightbulb part of MilTrad with the other one.

Turn 6: Gunpowder -> Chemistry.

Turn 7: Our expedition lands on the large island south of Hawaii with many elephants. There's a barb galley sailing in the bay.

Turn 8: Chicago -> Oxford University, Seattle -> Market, LA -> Market. Portland founded on Elephant Island and gifted to Roosevelt.

Turn 9: Atlanta -> Islamic Temple. Look, there's a barb city on Elephant Island. Chariots ride to battle.

Turn 10: There are two LBs in the barb city. Chariots turn around and ride back.

Turn 11: Chemistry -> Military Science. Hut on Elephant Island gives gold. Barb galley sunk by our caravel. Houston liberated.

civ4screenshot0111zr5.jpg

Turn 12: San Francisco -> lighthouse.

Turn 13: :coffee:

Turn 14: Boston is being farmed up and should be able to grow soon.

Turn 15: We enter the Industrial Era. MilScience -> ??? (probably MilTrad). Roosevelt adopts Emancipation. The next player should set him straight after 3 turns or so. Recommend we start spamming grenadiers and wipe out Hammurabi. We have some happy problems. To protect Roosevelt we should probably wipe out that barb city on his island.

Our vassal adopted emancipation. Civs that don't have emancipation adapted (including us) will suffer a happiness penalty. Since we can get our vassal to change civics, we should get him out of emancipation as soon as we can.

Got it, haven't checked the save. Building up grenadiers, maybe a priavateer or 2 for some piracy, and some galleons to invade Hammurabi sounds like a good goal.

I'm the one playing after you. Please do not leave me a hot military situation I could not handle : I'm not a competent warlord. But I shall try to respect the military production queues you will have started : I would not want to upset the military preparations for the guys, playing after me, who would wish to execute offensive operations.
