[DRN-001] BtS Any Which Way You Can

What do you think of 1E, 2N of Corn for 2nd city site? It would get the clams too on the 1st border pop, taking them away from Charlie's future copper/marble site.

I'd be curious if we had any seafood resources to the south as well.

I agree with letting Washington's 2nd pop claim the horses, a city there wouldn't do much good.

Chariot rush: Those were pretty hard in Warlords unless you were Egypt. With the new AI that builds more units, it may be even harder. But we could pillage Charlie to set him back while we tech IW and Swords.

I was looking at that spot, too. While I have been reading futurehermit's and Sisuitil's threads in the strategy forums, I consider myself a neophyte in whip-chopping armies quickly. I am good at conducting military campaigns, though -- too much time spent on the old Avalon Hill titles.

Also, when we occupy Aachen, we should rename it.

EDIT: How much in the way of espionage points do we have? Once we turn up the heat on Charlie, we should probably put some weight against him.

Looking at Sorceress's save, all the points were devoted to Catherine. I'm not sure how to change that.

I just remembered, Charlie is protective isn't he? Makes stuff even harder.

I'm thinking settle 2nd city, tech Mysticism for border pop and monuments (we get 1 :) from monument for charismatic), hook up horses as soon as Washington's border pops, and then IW for (hopefully) swords... there's gotta be iron nearby or the map generator's too cruel.

Possible. The road I was building at the end of my turn (T60) was aiming towards that region -- a path that did not exclude to dip it down towards the SE, if you prefered that region for the 2nd city.

I did not deal with those spy points during my turn. I'm not sure what to do with that, either : I have not had any experience in espionage, having stopped to play at C4 for 1½ year. I don't even understand, yet, how that whole Spy-system works. (In a current, parallel game on the huge "Europe" map, on marathon speed & prince difficulty, nobody has bothered me with spy-ops between 4000 and 400 BC.)

From the Screenshots Repository (not in front of my game right now):

Thing One
Thing Two

According to this, there should be a button or something in the esionage screen that lets you prioritize how your espionage points are split amongst your known rivals.

I just remembered, Charlie is protective isn't he? Makes stuff even harder.

Yes, he is. Protective and Imperialistic. We've got to knock him out quick.

How many turns for IW vs. Mysticism?

A slightly more radical alternative for city#2 would be to settle it south of Washington to get horses in first ring, start spamming chariots while researching IW. Use chariots for pillaging campaign vs Charlie (and try to stop him getting any settlers out) and then capture Aix/Aachen with more substantial units (hopefully swords).

If you proceed in that direction, take care : there is a unit of hungry wolves haunting that region (a little to the right of the horse resource).

Since it is now his turn to play, let's get a-move-on and counsel Pig's Will on where we wish to have him found that 2nd city : east (where njorls suggested) OR south (the "radical alternative"), OR south-east (as suggested by someone else : but there are big bears lurking around there).

My advice > I trust pigswill's judgment (his 2637 posts must mean something, in what regards C4 !) : I would let him decide.

But that concerns the founding of our 2nd city. We still have to evaluate our medium-term military strategy against Carolus Magnus.

This is a delayed got it. I'm too tired to play now, but will play and report in the next 12 hours. Why are we only spying on Catherine? Check the spy screen - Catherine has weigth 2 and the other weight 0. I will change this, and I will also send a chariot towards Aachen to check of the defences. I don't have any experience with chariot warfare on BtS, but I guess we need at least a 2-1 ratio to have a chance to take Aachen. Better to it quickly before the cultural defences build up. I'm inclined to do some chopping and whipping. Any thoughts on that?

I don't know if you'll be able to take Aachen but yeah at least 2-1 numbers is going to be needed. If you can harass him and keep him from hooking up copper, that might be all that you can do. We might want to change to another city if we can make a good iron city when IW comes in.

Why are we only spying on Catherine?

Because the game programme set that situation by default ! If you read some previous posts, you will realize that few people on our team appear to know how to deal with spy-points. I, for one, have no experience whatsoever in understanding & manipulating C4's espionage & special-ops system.

Consequently, if you know what to do, feel free to change the allocation of points.

If Charlemagne is going to be our first hot-war adversary, should we not invest all of our spy-points against him ? :scan:

I think that the aim of early chariots is to pillage Charlie and stop him linking up to metals. We'll probably need iron for swords before making a serious attempt at Aachen but what we can do is stop him from progressing.

Good news and bad news.

Iron working was in 1800BC, but there is no iron to be found anywhere  I wanted to go Writing, but squeezed Pottery in first for cottages and granaries, since we are running out of things to build.

The good news is that we do have a small chariot army gathering outside Aachen, and the copper is not yet connected :) I suggest waiting until all 7 chariots are in place, then DOW and moving them 1 NE onto the hill, attacking Aachen unless the defences are too overwhelming. If there are only 1-2 archers, then I say go for it. We do need that city and its copper mine, and the next opportunity will not be until catapults - many, many turns away.

I did some hill forest chopping and one turn of whipping to get the troops out. Unfortunately I made a small mistake and we now have one unhappy face in Washington  It will go away in 10 turns or so. We got one fishing boat (already in the production queue). I suppose it was meant for exploring, so I sent it north to check out the island there.

I also changed the weights in the spy screen to distribute the espionage points more evenly. Future players may want to adjust this from time to time.

Good luck with the warfare!

I'm not a warrior -- not at all ! Don't count on me to make daring, risky moves. I'm the 4th to play (from the end of Saturday's situation).

good luck guys & girl, i will be lurking this thread as I am a BTS noob

Thx ! It's my very first "succession game"...and also, I had stopped playing at C4 for 1½ year : BTS got me motivated again. I play fairly well, but too cautiously : I'm counting on the guys for the heavy-duty :cowboy: & :trouble: stuff.

Brave yanks riding off to certain death in their chariots. Aachen or bust!

By the time those chariots make it next to Aachen, it will have 3 archers for sure. That means you a minimum of 6 chariots, preferably 7, to take it.

Not so sure about that. We obviously need to take a look at Aachen, but if RHE is in REX mode they could easily have sent archers with settlers, leaving only 2 archers in the capital. We have 7 chariots and they should be able to take out 2 archers (1 suicide mission to nick the archer, 1-2 to finish him off). Spears would be fatal, but the bronze is not connected. Give it a try!

If there are 3-4 archers then I suggest pillaging and attacking lesser cities until reinforcements arrive.
