DVD drive doesn't read the disk!

I wanted to install civilization IV onto my PC, and the DVD is trying to read the disk, but nothing happens. There are no any messages, anything is not responding, untill I take out the disk. After it, everything works properly. The DVD drive works. I tried other disks without any problem.

I chaged the DVD in the shop, but the second has the same problem.

I tried the game DVD on other macine, and it works! I do not understand this problem.
I have Win2000 with all patches, directx9, and everything, the game needs.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

Obviously a problem with your drive. You can get a new DVD Reader for around 15€ (Lite-On is a good and cheap brand) or a DVD Burner for around 40€

My reader works with all my DVD-s, except this.
But this works on an other PC.
I really do not have any idea.

Several people have this problem, it appears to be related to the copy protection (SafeDisk4). Sometimes just waiting long enough solves it (some people have reported waiting 20 mins!), sometimes booting with the DVD in the drive, sometimes opening and closing the drive, sometimes nothing. Have a look back in this forum for several threads on this subject, you may not find a solution that works for you though. In my case I can see the DVD to install, but the game will not recognise that it's there to run.

Wouldn't it be much easier for a tweak that makes it so the CD isn't required? After all, it certainly would boost performance and reduce the liklihood of damaging or losing the CD..

Perhaps someone knows how to disable the CD requirement?

Hi people

I am having the same problem. I have a DVD player and also NERO Burning program.

I use it and don't see why I shouild uninstall this to get CIV4 to work.

Any ideas anyone?

Hi,

I seem to be having a similar problem: I installed Civ IV (and the latest patch), but still the game won't start, to be precise:

I tells me to

"please insert the correct CD-ROM" and start anew.

however I have the DVD-Version - and thus also only one disk.

Ideas anyone??

Fil4000 (longing to finally get started)

From what I read in previous threads, the DVD is the UK version.

The stupid thing is, there isn't a UK technical support - There is a US, and so far what replies have been received simply say to "check you are using the correct CD". Well that's just great. Thank you for your support ...

It's scarey that this wasn't sussed prior to release.

I've looked in previous threads, and the suggestions are just not good enough. There's no crack for this game, and I'm not going to start deleting other things that I use.

Cheers Bunk,

yeah, I saw that too - and I also wasn't very lucky finding any useful pointers here - so far.

Hopefully somebody will find out somthing soon - I'm sure, I'm not the only one affected...

It's scary how much wasn't sussed prior to release. I've noticed that the Tech Support forum is the 4th biggest forum (in terms of posts) and closing in on Strategy!

Make sure you email FIraxis/Take2 tech support - they need to know how many problems they have with this game!

I too would like a way to play without the CD/DVD - online verification (as in Steam/Halflife etc) or such would be a good start...

Hi

I've just bought the game after playing the demo and have experienced the same problem ie, put the disk in the drive and the drive attempts to read it but without any success.

Has anyone actually found a comprehensive solution to the problem or (and I doubt this having read the previous threads) heard anything back from the so-called experts that decided to release this product in such a shoddy state.

Any replies gratefully received

Does everyone haveing this problem have burning software?

If so, have you tried running CIV IV with all non-ms services and startup items turned off thru MSconfig?

Do you just have a plain old DVD ROM you are attempting to play it from?
or do you just have one DVD R/W???

I've got Nero - Burning Rom.

The drive is a DVD Rom drive, the writer is a separate drive.

Will try turning off other programmes as you suggested

You might need to uninstall them altogether. I think securom detects certain "blacklisted" programs on your pc whether they are enabled or not.

Those Rat bastards!;) ;)

Same story here... have the DVD version and haven't been able to play the game yet... it's been a month... unistalled Nero, Clone, ShrinkDVD and had no change at all.. maybe I have to buy a separate pc dedicated to CivIV..

any other ideas??..

This may be a "solution" but why the hell should I uninstal a program I use!?

I've mentioned it in previod threads but:

If you create a new "limited" user on XP you will be able to run CIV4 using that user.
