Dwarves (30/09/07)

What have I started? I'll try to end this...

Crossbows to me seem more Dwarfy, but bows are undoubtedly more Tolkienly. This just means that, to me, the Dwarves in Tolkien are not as Dwarfy as in some other fantasy settings. This is not to pass judgment on the authors in any way, it's just my personal feeling. Others may well disagree.

None of this detracts from the fact that these units are great, and will fit perfectly in not just the LotM, but also many other fantasy mods.

And you can't domesticate zebras. :mischief:

...the Dwarves in Tolkien are not as Dwarfy as in some other fantasy settings.
You do know, of course, Tolkien pretty much invented the modern fantasy dwarf as we read of them today? Every other fantasy setting you have read has undoubtedly come much later.

Oh God, again, what have I started.

Yes I know that Tolkien pre-dates most fantasy except Conan (and that didn't have many dwarves), but it does not necessarily follow that Tolkiens' dwarves are the most valid type of dwarf, as there is no objective dwarf people to compare them to.

Also, as I stated above, this is just my personal feeling, YMMV - especially if you're a massive Tolkien fan.

Meh, Tolkiens dwarves are the objective dwarf people to compare other dwarfs to, and I`m not even a massive Tolkien fan. I`m just massive. J.R.R.R.R.R.R.R.`s Dorfs are teh 1st Dorfs, and all teh other Dorfs are based on them. All hail Dorfs. The LOTR ones. Stunties are fun! Weee!

Well, there were plenty of dwarves before Tolkien, especially in Norse and Saxon mythology. But Tolkien changed them to such an extent that he did essentially invent "modern fantasy dwarves" in the sense of short people with beards who live in mountains, are good metal-smiths, and are mostly good.

As far as I know, the only weapons that Tolkien ever describes dwarves using are swords, axes, and bows.

You forgot the "beer" part. I just love the scene when the Fantastic Trio is at the Rohan King`s crib, and Gimli slurpes down a pint like its a milkshake. And then it runs down his beard.. priceless :D

So no spears, hammers and whatnot for dwarves? They might aswell include x-bows then..

Ahah, one weapon that Tolkien specifically has the Dwarves wield is a mattock. The Dwarves from the Iron Hills carry these into the Battle of the Five Armies at the end of the Hobbit.

Yeah, dwarfs couldn't live without mattocs

But, if tolkied does not describe the dwarfs not using spears... then howcome there are dwarf units with spears in the mod ;) :p ... but I understand that a crossbow is a bit more modern weapon than a spear :)

Well you answered your own question, so why bother asking?

:p

Well, that thought came after I've already written it... but I just wanted to say something - something other than "+1".

And maybe explain things ... mostly maybe to me :)

Since no one mentioned beer in the last 4 posts, I`m here to ammend it.

Picture is the courtesy of our fellow member, jlvfr. He didn`t make the stuff but we won`t hold that against him ;)

Im not sure how, or why I missed this pack...

Whether you like it or not Plot, your work on Narnia continues...expect to see almost all of these as New Narnians (Under the Good Prince Caspian) one day :)
