On Erebus maps always Dwarf because of the double movement in hills. Otherwise always Lizardman for their speed of two and the amphibious attribute.
That means the poll is missing the "smart" option. :)

I tend to have access to Axemen/Swordsmen before Hunters, so siding with the Lizardmen gives me a couple of decent animal-catching units. Additionally, I find that in situations where I will lose to the counterattack the Lizardmen are more likely to be able to flee successfully.

Dwarves. I've always been amused by the little dynamos. True enough that we Elves have little in common with them but I'm not bound by the old prejudices.

'sides, they've been scarce of late since the fall of the Dwarf fortress at Moria.

I ussually choose Dwrves, but that mostly because I enjoy seeing a couple of dwarven champions in with my Regular champions.

I usually tech for Bronze or Hunting somewhat early, so I just grab whichever I can't build myself.

Also, I'll go for Lizards if I'm pursuing vertical growth since it lets me nab Animals easier/faster and I'll grab the Dwarves if I think I'll invade a neighbor soon.

In the end, I get Lizards more often than Dwarves because of the Animals.

mostly lizardmen... I like to use them for exploration, fleeing the dwarves and getting better results from huts and forts..
(thus I won't need to researche hunting before long) (especially as more often than not there are no hill nearby to help dwarves fleeing)

but sometimes dwarves in order to have hill-smart champions...

Mostly I choose the one I think I will need most at the time.

It depends what stage of the game i am at. Early game always go for lizardmen to help with exploration, ( always useful for grabbing more hunts / dungeons/ clearing out the map,) mid/late game will choose axemen.

Pretty much always the dwarves. I'm way too addicted to the metal path so having the special double hill move units to upgrade to my champion army is more useful for me.

Men of lizard, of course. They're cold blooded.

Dwarves. Lizardmen are recon units and recon units suck unless they are beastmasters who were upgraded from disciples of the leaves (for march). If an unit cannot innately heal the same turn it attacked, it sucks. There is limited time to butcher enemy for xp and stopping to heal just won't do. (I like insanely powerful, insanely promoted uberunits and not hordes of cannon fodder.)

but ... dwarves cannot innately heal either ... ???

It seems your answer more promptly supports the "neither" option, as you only tend to favor the uberunits.

yeah... that is the one thing I hate about Recon. The scouting force, the mobile guys out front are the ones that have to stop to heal.

So much for being mobile.

(In all fairness if Recon could get March, I would focus entire games on them forgoing the melee like all together.)

Personally,I prefer the Dwarves.

I often don't research hunting because its so expensive, so getting a couple good hunters for animal capture duty is handy. Later in the game I'd probably pick dwarves though, unless I was already playing a dwarf civ.
