DYP on the MAC

No problem. Please let us know how you get on?

Last night I installed and started a new game with DYP. I have to say, I probably should have done it sooner. I like what I have seen so far. Thanks for creating the installer/updater. It made installing DYP as snap.

Later Days

It's working just fine (Wow! look at all that stuff!) - but there IS something odd: I've only really tried one game, but EVERY SINGLE ONE of my opponents is Ethiopian! What gives? I drew Siamese on Random in this game. I do have another game that I just started, Polynesian, but haven't played a turn, so don't know if this is a true bug or not (though I doubt it).

I've never played it myself, past the point of checking it loads and runs. However, I've just loaded up a scenario and this is the screen I get to select my civ and the rivals, before I select anything. Note that most of the rivals are set to .... Ethiopia!

So are you sure you didn't leave it with the default rivals in the rival slots?

AH HAH! You've caught the Great American Plot! We will see ALL Non-Americans swept up in absolute hatred of - yes, that's right - Ethiopia!!!!! Hah, Hah, Hah!
No, seriously. Feel free to edit that last bit out - it's a bit TOO American, even for me.
Anyway, yeah, thanks for the observation; I had somehow missed that. I opened another game and (of course) reset the E's to Randoms...
ALAN H, Ladies and Gentlemen!

Alan,

As I mentioned in another thread, I have downloaded DYP.

Two issues - 1 / your drop & drag GOTM installer which I downloaded from your link in an earlier message in this thread just 'unexpectantly quits '? hence I was unable to use it.

2/ Having copied my 1.21g folder, upgraded it to 1.29b2, installed the DYP files & folders I can launch the application, select my orld & opponents but when it gets to the introduction screen it quits befoe I have time to hit the OK button.

If I can resolve the 1st issue perhaps the 2nd will dissappear. Any ideas - can I provide you with files etc. to help diagnose the problems ?

For reference I run a 17" iMac under OS 10.3.5 with 512M RAM.

1. At what point does the installer crash? At launch? When you try to drop something? ...

2. Can you look in the Console and, under Logs, see if there's a Crash log for the GOTM Installer? If so, post it here or PM me with it?

3. There's a more generic, and slightly more recent, build of the drag and drop installer here capable of modding some other games as well. Try this and see if it's any better.

Hi Alan,

Downloaded the newer Installer but similar results. I get a crash report for "Mod Installer" which I can send to Apple but can't find on the HD.

Here is the file in Library/Logs/Crashreporter (hidden folder) "Mod Installer .crash.log" NB I have changed the name & extension to .doc to get it through the enclosure system

Ditto the DYP crash report.

.txt would work as well or better.

Hmm, interesting! Are you running as an admin user? It looks as if the software can't run the Unix 'locate' command to find your installed copies of Civ3.

Please can you go to the Terminal and type:

/usr/bin/locate "*/Civilization III"

hit return, and copy/paste what you see to a post? That's the command the software is trying to perform.

The DyP crash log indicates that the resources files are probably not installed properly. That's resources.pcx and resources_shadows.pcx.

Alan,

Terminal response

"-bash-2.05b$ /usr/bin/locate "*/Civilization III"
-bash: /usr/bin/locate: No such file or directory
-bash-2.05b$ "

NB The folders and main application files have been renamed to reflect different versions. Is this a no-no ?

Folder renames are fine. But the drag and drop installer will not find or recognise your Civ3 apps if you have renamed them. I create aliases of the apps and rename the aliases if I want to drop something with a useful name in the dock. As a general rule I recommend never changing application file names in OS X.

However, that's not what's causing the crash it would just give you a message in teh window saying it can't find your Civ3 application copies.

It appears you don't have the locate command in your OS X installation, or you don't have access to it from your user account, which is worrying :hmm: You didn't say if you are using a restricted user account on your Mac?

I guess I'd better build a version that doesn't crash if locate isn't available, and you'll have to drop your applications on it manually. Watch this space ...

Strange indeed. Well, I've uploaded a new build that should handle that error. It's here. Let's see if this is any better. When you run it you should get a message that it can't find your copy of whatever application it starts up looking at. Select Civilization III in the pop up menu at the top of the window, then you'll have to drop the 1.29 copy you want to modify onto the window, then drop the DyP folder onto that.

Are you sure you launched the modified version? The crash log is identical to the previous one. But based on the result you reported in Terminal, the modified appiication should not have even gone into the routine where it crashed.

Alan,

Downloaded again from your link in the text above (is this correct ?). It gives me Modinstaller.dmg modified Wed 13 Oct - so far so good. When unpacked it gives me Modinstaller volume modified on Wed 28 April. This contains Mod Installer.app version 0.1, 1,160,889 bytes, modified Wed 7th January 2004 which does not look like a recently revised version.

Any ideas ?

Well that isn't what I get :hmm: Maybe you are looking at a cached copy from your previous download? The size you quote is from the previous disk image. The .dmg I uploaded yesterday is smaller - 706.6 KBytes.

OK. I've uploaded a zipped copy of the disk image downloaded from that link here. See if you can do anything with this.

Gotcha :)

I'll install the DYP with your installer and see how it goes.

Many thanks for your trouble.
