How do people get such early game wins?

Not sure if they are still around after all the problems with the server, but some of the HoF games had write ups that gave the gist of how it was done. Just look for the type of game you play and read one.

they either edit the rules or are just very good at what they are doing

vxma I can't figure out how to find an appropriate HOF game to see an example of early dom or early spaceship vc that would be worthwhile to look at carefully.

Any particular level? The strategy varies a bit depending on how useful you can expect the AI to be.

Funnily i was just looking at one of your games a spaceship win at warlord level i believe. Nice
I am more interested at emperor-demigod level but wasn't able to find one for that.

Take a look at this Gauntlet from last year, it was large, demigod, diplomatic (same strategy, more or less, as spaceship).
