Earth map, with 18 civs (Huge)

Why can't we load the map into the public maps folder within the Civ 4 folder? I didn't go into My Documents/My Games/.....and the game loaded fine.

how do you install the map in civ 4 in what folder?

I unzipped the map and Winzip stuck it into C:\unzipped\Earth18civs. I copied the unzipped file and pasted it into
C:\Documents and settings\myname\my documents\my games\SMCiv4\Saves\WorldBuilder

I started a game by double clicking on the map. For future gameplay I copied and pasted Earth18civs onto the desktop and start it from there.

If you have made the cheat = chipotle change to the ini file you can bring up the main menu inside a game and access World Builder to spice things up. If you need a small bit of cash during the game hit the shift key and then the #4 key for an increase in your gold. HTH :D

WHERE TO PUT THE CUSTOM MAPS:
Put all your Custom maps in the folder blow and load them via "PLAY NEW SCENARIO" option in-game.

Here is my problem. I downloaded the Turkish mod and now the Turks are my 19th civilization. But apparently I can' t play this map with the Turks. How can I add a civilization into the map.

I am currently unsure if you can have 19+ civs in-game.
But I can tell you what to do if you really want to have Turkey in this particular custom map.

Here are your options: (this is of course IF the game is hardcoded to ONLY have 18 civs.)

- replace one of the Civs as Turkey and use their starting plot.

You can do this by using Julius Caesar as an example:

-- Find --
Code:
	LeaderType=LEADER_JULIUS_CAESAR
	CivType=CIVILIZATION_ROME

-- REPLACE WITH --
(make sure you type THE "CIVLEADERNAME" & "CIVNAME" are in CAPS!!!)
(Make sure you replace "CIVLEADERNAME" with that Civilization's Leader name AND also "CIVNAME" with that Civs country name also!)

Code:
	LeaderType=LEADER_CIVLEADERNAME
	CivType=CIVILIZATION_CIVNAME

- replace one of the Civs starting plot where you want Turkey to be via the World Builder.

- modify the map so you can select ALL the Leaders and have them start in Random Starting Plots.
(or you can just load the Default Earth Map that came with the game.
I belive it is the same one if you edit it like how I show you below.)

Hope that is what you are looking for and I just didn't drivvle :crazyeye:

Kilim I changed the map according to your advice and noticed that it worked. But I have a different problem now. Because I changed civilization to NONE AI turned all starting locations to random. When I change the text to

LeaderType=NONE
CivType=CIVILIZATION_TURK
Team=18
PlayableCiv=1
StartingX=70, StartingY=40
Handicap=HANDICAP_NOBLE

it doesn't work.

When I change the text like this for example

LeaderType=NONE
CivType=CIVILIZATION_MALI
Team=14
StartingX=55, StartingY=34
PlayableCiv=1
Handicap=HANDICAP_NOBLE

then it does not work. I can' t play the Turks nor the starting locations are correct.

I've discovered that, playing Russia, one can move the first settler to the tile southwest of the pigs to the west of the starting point and if Moscow is built there, the city will in a few turns generate so much culture that its borders will totally hem in the Germans. With one more city to the south, I hemmed in the Greeks. Now I have all of Mother Russia to expand into at my leisure...assuming those pesky Chinese and Attila (or whomever) will stay put for a while. A fun map! I'm sure it will bog down as time goes by, but for now, its running great.

yes, it is possible to add them to the WBS, editing it with notepad.

add lines such as

Option=GAMEOPTION_NO_CITY_RAZING\

in the header.

What if I wanted no barbarians? Also, where is the header at...the very top?

(Note: This post refers to the 9 civ version; I think it's better to post it here than in the spammed strategy forum)

After playing some small random maps on noble, and greek_world on warlord, it was about time to try Monarch on the worldmap. I chose Persia, mainly because of the resource-rich starting location (I settled 1 north btw).

Everything went great at the beginning: 2 settlers west, then I spammed Greece, Egypt and Rome with the incredibly powerful Immortals. Greece and Egypt were conquered and Rome banned to the Iberian peninsula before I even met the first spearman or swordsman.

However, logistical challenges and raging corruption (13gpt in Rome!) forced me to halt expansion. The first religion I founded was Christianity in 125AD. About that time, Barbarians became a problem - and it's getting worse every turn. They only appear at two locations, north of Persepolis and west of Egypt; but their sheer number is overwhelming, 1-3 fights every turn, I need about 10 mobile units just for that purpose if I don't want to loose improvements.

At 400AD I decided to wage war on India - not a good idea. First city only had 1 spear + 3 bows which I took without catapult, but immediately afterwards they got longbows and upgraded about 50% right away. To make it worse, the barbs started to bring lots of swordsman, at least 1 per turn...

Not sure what to do now, but probably I'll reload from 400AD and concentrate on the barbs until knights (and enough money to upgrade my lvl4 Immortals) become available.

Some questions to Rhye:
- Is there a specific difficulty the map is optimized for?
- What's up with the barbs? Did you change their default behaviour or add events? It seems to me that they deliberately chose me as target since I'm strongest. If they got cities, they must be far away, since I dind't find any yet. At any rate, the barbs on Monarch are much more a problem than anything I've seen in Civ3!

Although quite easy at the beginning (probably due to Immortals), Monarch difficulty overall seems much harder than in civ3. My score (and citycount) is nearly twice as high as the Chinese's which are second, but nonetheless everyone is getting closer, and I can barely keep up with the AI in the tech race.

btw, could you tell me your impressions on greek world?
Sure: :goodjob:

...ok, some details:
I played the Romans on Warlord, which is the default difficulty for this scenario. I loved that you directly start with iirc 6 Praetorians, 3 workers and 2 settlers. I didn't really need the second settler, but the army was great for a Blitzkrieg versus the surrounding minor tribes right away. I took 3 cities on turn 2-3, and continued marching through Europe, until I controlled everything south of what's probably supposed to be the Alpes, about the southern half of France and part of Yugoslavia. Then - btw similar to what happened on the worldmap - corruption and logistics forced me to concentrate on city growth.
...I don't remember many more details atm...some major things:
- For a long time I considered it impossible to actually win by anything but histograph withing the 170 turns, so I exclusively focused on improving my score through cultural growth and expansion in the vast north.
- Both the germans and barbs gave me quite a headache, as assaults on my territory became worse and worse - especially after axes appeared.
- I didn't have problems to stay at peace with the major civs; even Carthago (the civ3 Byzantine leaderhead), which were heavily annoyed with me all the time no matter what I gifted, didn't declare war until much later (due to my attack on their friend Alexander).
- Unfortunately the scenario seems heavily bugged: For a long time Persia was leader, with more than 700 score (Rome 450), but suddenly they vanished, losing all cities to I think the Greeks IN ONE TURN. Suddenly Greece was at score 700+...but when I restarted civ4 and loaded, they were back at 400. And about a dozend turns later, exactly the same fate as Persia fell upon Greece.
- Another bug: Started a new game as Persia, then loaded one of my Roman saves, whereupon I am told that I've lost the game - being the conquered Persian civilization! :lol:

All in all I had much fun with greek_world! I didn't finish it yet, halted about 60 turns from the end...Alexander is halfway down, and I do believe that it might still be possible to win by conquest within the remaining 60 turns. But incredibly time consuming.

btw, the increased tech cost seems perfectly balanced for that scenario - it's possible to get better units and govs for the second half of the game, but it's really an effort!

May I ask you if there's a real-world map where the map is copied from?

Well, i have played Greek World 3 times, each one with one civ. Won by points with Rome and Persia( the easiest), but lost as Macedonia(the barbarians crushed me). I have found the raging hordes of barbarians that begin around year 100 untill the end of the scenario the most difficult thing in the mod. I thought it was intended to simulate historic Rome problems with the barbarians around that time, i dont know.

I have played all the mods that have the game, and this one is the best for me, but besides the increased tech cost, are there more modifications from the vanilla rules?
And, well, i would like a more in-deph scenario about classic times with some events like the Desert War and American Revolutione have, modified tech tree, longer game and the feeling that had The Ancient Mediterranean Mod in civ3, Thamis one.

But in overall i think is the best mod that comes with the game. The map was very good too.

Why can't we load the map into the public maps folder within the Civ 4 folder? I didn't go into My Documents/My Games/.....and the game loaded fine.

Because ideally your normal login on a windows xp or vista computer should not have administrative access, therefore you wouldn't be able to add new files in the civ4 folder.

That's how most operating systems are designed and it would fix a lot of flaws (such as spyware, viruses, etc). Even windows 2000/XP is designed that way but game/program developpers were too lazy and used to the win9x way of doing it (all users have unlimited access to the computer) and never bothered before Microsoft started forcing them to do it this way.

I for one am happy civ4 is made this way, that means:

save games and profiles are saved in my own My Documents folder, easy to find and backup, not mixed in with the game itself

if multiple people would use my machine, each user would get their own mods/savegames/etc, not mixed in with mine.

Too many benefits.

So yes, you can put them in the civ4 folder but ideally it should be in your My Documents folder. ("your my documents" sound gramatically bad lol)

Hi.
Lovely Map. Is there a quick and easy way to edit out the space race from Senerios? I like playing on Emperor+++ and would love to play earth without losing EVERY time to the Ai's production Goliath.
Thanks, -Yc

I'd like to play this word map with my friend in hot seat mode.

Is there anyway to do it...? Please helppp..:(

cities and civs vanishing in few turns in greek world isn't a bug.... there are hidden events that drive the development of the scenario in a certain way, if the human player is distant and depending on randomness.

and yes, extra-strong barbarians at the end simulate invasions of that period.

why don't you open a new thread about this?

Guys, ive played civ3 and worked with the Map editor. But i am missing something here. I put the map into the scen file and it came up but only showed the usa and south america. Why couldn't i see the rest of the world (i did scroll) and also where is the editor . I have found it in other games i run up but in those you can't set the map size.

Need answers Plz. Thanks :)
