"Eastern Europe" - why we hate the term

I wont bother to read all those pages, so this might be said many times before, but anyhow:

Most countries called East-European still have marks of the cold war era (example). They are clearly seperate group of countries, and the reason for their difference from other Eurpoean countries is that they were "in the east" during the cold war. The term is very useful when you want to talk about these countries, and that's why I will continue using it. It has (almost) nothing to do with geography, and it isn't meant to be offensive. You just have certain kind of history, and it is visible in your countries at the present day. Why would it make you any worse than any others? Also, I think it's better to call Belarus, Russia &c "Former Soviet states", because they are clearly different from East Europe.

And btw, I'm puzzeled why you Winner are so furious about this term, considering your opposition to "pc"-terminology about islam.

cyprus? bah, those greedy bastards didnt want to share their bronze working technology with anyone for centuries. i'll never forgive them for that!!

But Bronze technology was not only a privilege of Cyprus. It just had the most bronze in the ancient world which translates to possibly a better bronze technology than some other regions but it also translates to the more important $$$ factor for the island and also making the island a worthy island to invade. Thankfully by the colonization of the island by Myceneans the national identity remained the same which holded the advantage of sharing the fate of Greek and then Roman-Byzantine civilization while keeping the advantages of the importance for trade in an island in a crucial spot and the disadvantages of being far away than mainland Greece. So the 2000 + Bc history of Cyprus makes interesting parallels to today's situation.

Because...Poland is to the East of Germany?

so is iceland not scandinavian because it is to the west of Norway?

And btw, I'm puzzeled why you Winner are so furious about this term,

Because it is insulting to us!!!

It might not seem insulting to you because your not czech, or polish or hungarian, but we are and we consider it offensive.

I'm sorry. Perhaps you can talk to England and France about reversing East and West. That way you guys can be Western Europe and they can be Eastern Europe.

Your right. Its located in the center of Scandanavia

Nonono. Some Portuguese people might find that offensive. Therefor, they are a part of Central Europe.

Portugal is nowhere near Central Europe.
