eldar08: Gridlocked!

We need to get a settler to the spot off of Spokane Sally that is occupied by Cleo right now. This would block access to the Babylon area.

I would suggest we take some of the units on the mainland and disband them now to rush settlers now underway. We have a few swords, spears and even a horse available now that we have rails in most places.

I've got it, but probably won't be able to play until Thursday.

I should have time later today.

We are at War with Babylon.
We have MAs on Babylon with Greece (1 turn left), Zulu (1 turn) and Japan (expired).

Victory
We have 62% of the world's population.
We have 36% of the world's area.

Four rivals are still alive.

Greece is the most cultured (16919 cp).
Zimbabwe is the most cultured city (3356 cp).

City Count
Babylon: 03
Japan: 03
Greece: 15
Zulu: 18

Rough Plans
Finish off Babylon, connect Furs (between Elippi and Babylon).
None of Babylon's cities are on the grid.

DoW on Greece; get Zulu and Japan involved via MAs. I fear Greek science more than Zulu units.

Leave Japan alone for a while. Don't want to be diverted from the Greek War.

Shut down research after Replaceable Parts (Infantry, Artillery and faster workers/slaves).
Upgrade cannons.
Rush settlers as needed.

Sherman arrives in Kagoshima Kitty Kats and promotes to an Army, Sherman-3rd.

In the newly vacated area where Ellipi was, we build Fur a Few Dollars More.
Furs are now connected to Mayflower 871, our seventh native luxury.
We chop four forests to build a barracks in Fur a Few Dollars More.
We load 3 Cav into Sherman-3rd, but no more. We need Pentagon to have 4 unit Armies.

Zulus created an MGL last IBT with an Ancient Cavalry.
Zulus have 20 units focused on Babylon, and we can easily shut them in up here.
We have several units ready to take out Nineveh. I think I'll let the Zulu waste units on Nineveh this turn. They have four attackers (eAncientCav, eMace and 2 rMaces), but I think Nineveh will be still be okay.

We move 18 cannons into Fur a Few Dollars More to upgrade. We need 2160 gold to upgrade all 18 cannons and we only have 1396 gold. It costs 120 gold per upgrade, so we could upgrade 11 this turn.
We upgrade 11 cannons for 1320 of 1396 gold.

A Feel for Philly is founded near the current Zulu borders.

Japan has a lot of gold (538), but we'll wait a bit to try and get it. We can get all of it, plus some gpt, for Steam Power. However, I am afraid of Japan selling that tech. Checked the map. Zulu does not have a source of Coal. Greece has one, but it is an unconnected jungle tile.

Mpondo has six resisters, barracks and aqueduct. We move in ten Cavs and one Musket.
We grab three workers outside of Mpondo.

We pillage Zulu Wines near New Zimbabwe. This is their only Wine.
Capturing Mpondo also isolates Amatikulu, which contains the only Zulu source of Saltpeter. No new Cavs or Muskets.

We have a settler with no good place to build. The one open spot is a tundra city NE of Nineveh NightLife. It would give us two more Furs, but we don't need them.

Overview
Babylon is dead.

Japan is still alive and paying up 65 gpt for Steam Power. They have no Coal. :smug:

We are at war with Zulu and have killed all their forces they sent to take out Babylon. They were a target of opportunity, and they had to die sometime. They still have Crusaders. We have pillaged their Wines and Saltpeter is no longer connected to Zimbabwe, so no new Musket/Cavlary builds. They have a source of Saltpeter on their island, but I see no Zulu harbors on that island. Only Phasalos, a city captured from Greece, has a harbor.

We captured Mpondo of Zulu. It is on the grid, but everyone is resisting. We may want to raze and replace.

We have a Military Alliance with Greece vs. Zulu. And one with Japan vs. Zulu.

We learned Replacement Parts. We have upgraded many Cannons to Artillery. Three cannons overseas have not been upgraded.

Our workers are now double-Industrious while our slaves are just Industrious (it only takes 4 of them to rail a flat tile). Most of the marsh and jungles on our continent have been drained/cleared. We are doing some similar work overseas, but are ready to help rail to our new cities.

I started a lot of 30 turn settlers, with the idea that we could rush some if needed. We have one settler overseas and one ready to unload next turn.

We have a few Infantry being produced; no Muskets were upgraded to Infantry. I figured we would need Artillery more than Infantry, so that is where our cash went.

Japan has a settler pair near Capone's Crib. I have them blockaded with slaves.

We have a Cavalry Army, Sherman-3rd. Without the Pentagon, which we cannot build, all our Armies will be 3-unit fighting machines.

Furs are connected to Mayflower 871 via Fur a Few Dollars More. We lack Ivory, but have several soucrces near Mpondo.

Palo Alto Palomino Club flipped to Zulu on the 1295 AD IBT. It had a Musket and a Cavlary. It was liberated in 1300 AD.

PRE:
It is late in the game, so not going to go around and do a hard check on towns.

I switched Wild Horse from a rax to a settler. Not sure what we need with a barrack there. We have fewer and fewer foes and more troops than our support allows.

Switch Osaka Bang Bang to wealth, no real need for another barracks here. Make CE's taxmen.

I looked for a place on the new land to rush a barracks. I thought I started one long ago, but must be dreaming. I just do not see any reason to trust muskets to defend, so lets get a rax and upgrade a few muskets to infantry.

To me I do not see a huge need for trying to make artillery at this point, especially those that need 65 turns, so I will stop them. We have about 20 now. That should do it. We only have two nations in the game for all practical purposes.

Take 2 MDI and disband in Ski Bunny and use 20 gold to finish barracks.

I think we went a bit over board on the settlers. We have nearly 50 going up right now and I doubt we can plant that many. We would have a conquest win before then, if that is allowed. We could drop that by a lot and if we need more later, we will have plenty of units to rush them with or gold to buy them.

I cut off about a dozen of the settlers and I hope all of the artillery builds.

IBT:
Zulu cav attacks A FEEL FOR PHILLY and retreats.

1305AD (1):
Lots of WLTKD messages. I see two Zulu ships moving around.
I see Alex sending settlers out. We need to block them from the land approach, later maybe we can spare enough to block landings.

Whoops I see the barracks now, I saw the one in Mpondo, but it is not railed and could flip.

Ping two galleons.
5/5 cav kills the cav that retreated (1-0).
Disband a galleon. I don't see a need for 6 of them. We have a one turn shuttle to the other land. We do not need to load boats at other points. If we have to do any landings later we will just upgrade or rush and use a couple of armies.

5/5 cav kills 1hp musket in New Zim (2-0).
cav kills 1hp lb (3-0).
cav kills 1hp lb and razes it for 2 gold (4-0).

Found Seattle.

Upgrade 3 cannons and several muskets. We have about 3 or 4 muskets on the new land to upgrade.

Infantry can be used to cover artillery, but muskets cannot. Anyway we have the cash.

1310AD (2):
I upgrade 3 cannon on the mainland. I am sending over 6 to use as disbands. 3rd captures 2 slaves.

1315AD (3):
3rd kills musket (1-0).
2nd kills one (2-0).
cav kills one (3-0) and razed the town for 7 slaves.
[7-0]

IBT:
I saw a Greek LB die.
Settlers head back towards our lands. They had turned around last turn.

1320AD (4):
Found SF.
5/5 cav kills musket/settler (1-0) [8-0].

IBT:
Greek Knight killed something.

1325AD (5):
Found Miami and Houston.

Ping boat near Slingshot.
Upgrade a cannon. We have 1 left to upgrade on mainland.

Spend a bunch of gold to upgrade all the units on the mainland, except two I disbanded. We have the gold and having a few guerilla's will let us send a few more units overseas.

We only have 1 sword not in an army now. 14 MDI left to upgrade or disband as we need. The one cannon that I will get next turn.

Still have more than 400 gold and 700+ gpt. I have not sent out the extra cavs as they would

mostly just die attacking muskets. No units have been seen out in the field.

1330AD (6):
four 5/5 cav kill 1hp muskets (4-0).
3 cavs kill 1hp (7-0).
Last one goes elite and razed the city for 3 gold and 7 slaves. It had at least the KT.
[15-0]

Upgraded the last cannon and 2 MDI.

1335AD (7):
5/5 kills 2hp mdi (1-0).
four 5/5 cavs kill units (5-0).
3rd kills 2 muskets (7-0).

lost 2 cavs to muskets (7-2)
4 cavs win and raze city for 3 gold (11-2).
I had 1 retreat.

Copes was in this city. Got 7 slaves.

Found St. Louie.

cav kills LB (12-2) [27-2].
rush a few settlers and upgrade 2 MDI.

We have Shaka down to 4 cities on this land. I would expect we would want to get peace after we clear him from the continent. We should then wipe out Japan real fast and then turn on Alex.

1340AD (8):
Two 5/5 cav kill 1hp musket in Intombe (2-0).
4/5 kills one (3-0).
cav kills Impi and razes Intombe for 6 gold and 4 slaves and 2 cannon (4-0).

4/5 kills mdi (5-0) [32-2].

1345AD (9):
4/5 cav kills LB (1-0). Man where are the leaders?
disband the two captured cannons.

Found Detroit and New Orleans.

5/5 cav kills 1hp musket in Hlobane and makes a leader (2-0).
Form Hooker-4th. Yes It is General Hooker, not a hooker in keeping with both themes.

5/5 and 4/4 cav kill 1hp muskets (4-0).
Lee kills LB and razed it for 4 slaves (5-0).

Turns out there was a cannon so I disband it to shave off 10 turns.

We now have only 1 MDI left and it is in Sippar.
One sword outside of armies and it is also where no barrack exist.

Rush 2 more settlers for 40 gold total. One more landed, so three on hand and 2 either on their spot or next to it, for a total of 5.
[37-2]

1350AD (10):
I saw a Greek cav head out. No sure if that is new or not.

5/5 cav kills 1hp musket in Ulundi (1-0).
cav kills 1hp musket (2-0).
cav kills impi (3-0). Razed it for 3 gold and 5 slaves.

Found Denver.
Found Cincinnati

You can start shipping over workers, if you want. We have 1 marsh and 1 jungle tile left, not even in our borders. 1 mountain and a few roads to rail.

The artillery stack has a settler to use on the spot you move to next turn. The last city of Shaka on the land is on the grid.

I am not sure of the rules for the game in terms of breaking deals, namely alliances. We have either to go rouge and jump Japan and then Greece or sit around and wait for the deals to end.

Well we could ship over a few armies to the island, but I would just make peace after we grab the last city.

Others have done that with an alliance with us, so it is the norm. No matter to me either way.
We are at 44% of the land. 76 for pop.

If you opt to jump on Japan, count the spots and ensure we have enough settlers to fill the land. Don't want Alex to slip in. He was turned back with blockers. I tighten the block on Japan, but they could drop a settler with a boat.

I think we have pretty much put a unit on the valid spots. They won't found next to our borders.

Greece did better than I expected, taking four cities away from the Zulu (Amatikulu (3), Swazi (4), Zunguin (5) and Pharsalos (5)). All four were rather surrounded by Greece, so Greece had it rather easy.

Cincinnatti is our only coastal city near the Zulu. I think we should rush two/four Galleons there and use them to ferry troops across to the Zulu island. Transports would be nicer, but they are four techs away. We can move a lot of troops across, and then once Zulu is dead, we can carry them back across to deal with Greece. Or we could use them to capture the Greek Isles.

Greece's only source of Horses is 1N of Ephesus, which is also 2S of Hunt Valley Dollhouse. Two sources of Saltpeter are visible: 1N of Amatikulu (and 1S-1SE of Mpondo) and 1S of Corinth. Corinth is 4 tiles from a border, so we could not deprive the Greeks of Saltpeter on the first turn of the war; not with just 2 Cav Armies. It is bound to have at least three defenders.

Greece has learned Steam Power but their Coal, 1SE of Eretria, still looks unconnected.

I favor ignoring the current Zulu captial of Isandhlwana and let the Greeks lose units as they try to capture it. In the meantime, we clean out the Zulu island, reseed it properly on the grid, and then go after Greece.

Overseas Gridding 1350 AD
Spoiler :

1350_OverseasGridding.jpg

Victory
I've enjoyed the grid, so I would favor taking out Zulu and Greece, gridding what we can and see how much land we occupy. We could take out Japan at any time. I am curious about Domination Through Gridding.

If we can't win by Domination using the grid, let's win by Conquest. No one realized the possibility that we couldn't cover it all. Let us trash everything but one enemy city off the grid, filll what we can then do a Conquest if it isnn't enough. As far as play standards, I will check Eldars starting post to see if deal-breaking is in the spirit if not the letter of the rules. It could make a boring turn-set if we have to wait for deals to end. Will download the save and play tomorrow night.

If Conquest would be easier and less dull than domination, go for it.

Also I have no objection to deal-breaking, particularly at this late stage where we won't be trading with anyone.

I would hold off on the boats and take out the last city and then Japan. Then Greeks and see what we have. We could now go back to full out research now and have transports in short order. We have no great need for lots of gold.

I would expect we would still add gold while doing 4 or 5 or 6 turn research. Greeks are the only ones that can cause any trouble, so why let them get stronger? Take that last town to remove Zulu culture from this land mass.

We should be able to cripple Greece in a few turns. With Japan gone and us attacking Alex, we can just raze towns and plant as we get around to it. We have a lot of cavs doing nothing as they did not really have any targets. We will also gain the last lux.

So in short, lets take this land and see what we need for Domination. The two little Greek islands will be a snap as we already have a few boats on that side. We only have 3 man armies, so we do not need transports to move them.

Turns should be faster now that we will not even have worker task on the mainland.

If we make peace with Zulu then we have no deals with anyone. IF we then take out Japan, we can move all the defenders from the mainland to cover border towns with Alex. We can move all units from the Japan border as well.

If we take the last Zulu city, we gain a second coast in the event we need boats to invade. It is also one less place to take from Alex.

I suspect we cannot get to 66%, so I just prefer to not have anyone to look over my shoulder, namely Japan. Note that if we do it this way, we should ship the defenders to Sippar.

I suspect we cannot get to 66%, so I just prefer to not have anyone to look over my shoulder, namely Japan. Note that if we do it this way, we should ship the defenders to Sippar.

lurker's comment: Well, you should at least try to get to 66. Maybe there is enough room.

I don't see any place where I was suggesting we do anything other than go for 66. I merely agreed with the others that it does not look like the grid will let us get there. See #393 it said "So in short, lets take this land and see what we need for Domination. "

All I have been advocating is that we wait on going to the Zulu island, until we have the Greek continent clear of all nations.

We currently own all of one continent and maybe half of the other and that comes to 44%. Given we will not be able to have some of the available land in our borders, it is unlikely we can gain half again as much land as we have now.

I'll see what I can do. Besides, whether we can win by Dom or not, to win by Conquest means doing the same thing: raze all enemy cities. I can leave one enemy city, and settle everything on the grid. Should we fall short, it then is a matter of ease to slaughter the last man standing.

lurker's comment: Yes, go for 66. If there isn't enough room, kill them all.

I am playing, just being thorough. Japan and the Zulu are gone, and Greece is gassed. Their culture is my only real barrier. Best of all, I needed no deal-breaking to get there.
