Elder Scrolls MMO in the works

That's quite dissappointing. Especially since MMOs are evolving in a different direction than what they're going for here. Hotkey-lock-on based combat sounds boring, even in comparison to Elder Scrolls' horrid combat-system.
I'll still see what they'll have in store for E3 though. Who knows, they might surprise me.

I'm not cynical. I think there is a good chance the game could be awesome, which is what I don't want. I want the game to fail. I want all MMO's to fail. They are too addicting. And I feel social pressure (like from my brother) to play them. They cause carpal tunnel syndrome in my hands and cause problems with my girlfriend. MMO"s are evil.
Let me get it straight : you want games to fail and be bad just because you can't manage to control yourself ?

yeah pretty much. It's like being an alcoholic at a party full of booze and beer. :D

get rid of the booze and beer I say.

Work on your own issues without messing it all for everyone else I say.

I'll go with "cautiously optimistic," although the fact that none of the staples of TES seem to define this MMO is reason enough to pause.

Anyway, I know someone who is working on the MMO, and this person has said that Zenimax is making it, so Bethesda's single player TES series will be unaffected.

That still doesn't address the other points I made in my first post here.

What good is a game that doesn't have an ending? Why would anyone play a game that doesn't end? Is it too much to ask for a decent story in a rpg? Why must I compete with other people for imaginary numbers on my character stat sheet? Why must we as gamers be judged by how much time we invest in a game? Why must a game require such a heavy time investment to succeed?

Simply put, the mechanism for MMO's are stupid and unhealthy.

I played and liked MMOs before without feeling pressure to do anything. I was just playing with a few friends, did a few small raids but didn't bother joining guilds. I still had fun exploring the worlds and doing my little thing, running into people, trading, etc. I didn't have to partake in any of the intense crap going on. Not only do you not have to play the game, but if you still decide to play like I did, you still can play the game the way you want without feeling peer-pressured. How can someone feel peer-pressure in a videogame is beyond me. The peer-pressure to get drunk in high school was much higher than this thing.

Also, the diatribe about game without ending? uh... what the heck. Some of the best games don't end. Minecraft and X3 and whatnot. (No, don't. They don't end).

People could make similar arguments about any genre they happen to dislike. What's the point of a sports game, you could just go out and play the sport. What's the point of a shooter, the stories are usually ass and point and shoot has been done a million times before. What's the point of a story driven RPG, you could just read a book instead.

Just because you personally don't like MMO's doesn't mean everyone else shares your opinion. I'd be perfectly happy if they never released another Madden game, but I don't actively wish the series would die. I can just not play them, and some people enjoy them, so why begrudge them their games?

That still doesn't address the other points I made in my first post here.
There is no point to adress, save for the decent story one.
The rest are actually simply the features of a MMO. It's like saying "what's the point of having to aim ?" after playing a FPS.
Simply put, the mechanism for MMO's are stupid and unhealthy.
No, you're just unable to deal with your issues and then expect the entire world to alter itself in order to take care of your own shortcoming.
That kind of reasoning is far more unhealthy than anything else you listed.

I daresay a good chunk of TES's fanbase aren't crazy about MMOs (or maybe it's just me?).

Now that we have a sample size of two, we can declare this a confirmed fact. :mischief:

If there actually is something to this hypothesis, I would think that the MMO
will face an uphill battle succeeding.

Now that we have a sample size of two, we can declare this a confirmed fact.

And thousands upon thousands of posts that I have seen on several other websites (some of which have millions of users) have almost all been negative or at least cautious but ready to be disappointed about this MMO (especially as all the info on it so far indicates a pretty generic mmo). Not too mention the large chunk of console TES players who may not even play games on their PCs (if they even have one that can play it) at all.

Just got the article on TES: Online the other day from Game Informer, and I have to say, it has an interesting premise with Molag Bal, Manmarico, Cyrodil, and everything else, and it's quite nice to say the least. It will undoubtedly be a grindfest to get to the level cap, something along the lines of a hundred and twenty ours or so. Cyrodil also will apparently be a massive pvp centric area, lots of combat and everything from forts to farms to castles and in the Imperial City itself, and the top player of the faction that takes the Imperial City is crowned Emperor of Tamriel.

Honestly, it looks good, but only time will tell.

In all honesty, I would only be interested in playing this game for the lore information it will create/expand. I'm kind of bummed about the Imperial race being non-playable (or did I read that wrong?), I've been playing an Imperial nightblade type character since Morrowind :(

Honestly the more I read about this game the more it sounds like World of Warcraft set in Tamriel. Problem is I've been over WoW for some time. Not really interested in rehashing that particular territory. Seriously the best I've seen them come up with so far is that it has elements of WoW, Rift, and The Old Republic. Problem is, I've played both Rift and The Old Republic and, guess what, they're WoW with a less retconned/raped lore and WoW with lightsabers, respectively. I fully expect this game to take no chances, have nothing new or innovative in it whatsoever. With what I know of it so far I might check it out if it's FTP. If they want a monthly fee out of me they better unveil some information that's WAY more exciting than what they've given so far, because so far it looks like a game that might have been released 5 years ago.

After reading the GI article, I have a few issues.

1) Except the Aldmeri Dominion, the other two playable factions seem terribly forced and out of place in what I thought I knew about TES lore.

I would seriously like some explanation for the alliance of these races.

2) Big world/maps seem like a good idea, but I am going to be really PO'd if it turns out to be large tracts of bland terrain with nothing interesting going on. In my experience, the single player games always manage to put enough detail and interaction/immersion in the environments, I never felt frustrated about travelling on foot.

It's not enough to simply make a world large and explorable, it has to have enough life to make it worth exploring.

3) Even though the article mentions the Imperial province is going to be very similar to the one found in Oblivion, I'm pretty sure it will need to be covered in Jungle to be consistent with the lore, instead of the forest/grassland type terrain.

4) According to the 2nd Era timeline, it looks like the time period of the MMO will have to take place sometime between 2E830 (formation of Aldmeri Dominion) and 2E854 (when Tiber Septim is crowned Emperor).

I agree with Manaical that "me too" is not a good reason for releasing yet another MMO. They'd better start with an interesting and genre-challenging game design, rather than design a "WhatIf WoW was set in the Elder Scrolls".

They're seriously calling it the ALDMERI DOMINION?
Way to break lore :p

But but, they're treating the lore with all due diligence and the highest respect! It says so right in the articles! The internet can't possibly be wrong!
