Elder Scrolls MMO in the works

I just hope khajiit's and argonian's are playable.

If it's another theme-park MMO, it will fail miserably.

If they manage to incorporate some good sand-box elements, then the sky is the limit (difficult to pull off, though).

They are, but for some reason the Argonians are in an alliance with the Dunmer which doesn't make any sense at all considering they absolutely hate each other.

Well it's to be based 1000 years before Skyrim, before the slavery I assume.

Nothing I've read indicates that, although I am sure ZeniMax will retcon TES:O to hell and back to make a quick buck.

I'm quite certain that 1000 years before Skyrim slavery was alive and kicking in Morrowind. Vivec was already around by then so I think it's pretty safe to assume that the ancient Dunmer traditions were already well ensconced by this time. They're going to either have to break lore to ally Argonians with Dunmer or pull a cheesy "all Argonian players are actually freed slaves" bit. Either way this is a minor detail, but one that doesn't bode well for those of us who are hoping they will treat the lore seriously.

Lore is guaranteed to not be treated seriously. It's an MMO, it will be either entirely based on micro-transactions or a subscription free, for teh monehz.

They couldn't care less if the Tamriel fans don't like it for its inaccuracies, as the massive influx of brain-dead grinders will more than make up for it.

.... and the masses cried "Non-canon!" with just a righteous fury....

My little cynical heart is labouring already.

Perhaps it might actually be good?

Shocking, I know, but what's the harm in wishing?

I'm genuinely cautiously optimistic. I don't hype myself up since Spore but it looks and sounds rather neat.

The harm in wishing is that I've gotten my hopes up too many times in the past only to have games turn out to be crap. My default position nowadays is to assume it will be crap until proven otherwise.

Well, let's just say, on further research I changed my mind because:
They SAY:
All of Tamriel
Elder Scrolls
Actually:
Parts of Tamriel are locked for expansions, QED you might have to pay
The developers have stated that it takes some WoW-like things
All the things that make TES awesome (like radiant AI) not included.

Sounds interesting, but I won't hold my breath yet. It is probably going to be subscription-based, so I will probably skip it, but I'll wait and see on how it's going to elope.

(subbed for future news on the game)

I'm not cynical. I think there is a good chance the game could be awesome, which is what I don't want. I want the game to fail. I want all MMO's to fail. They are too addicting. And I feel social pressure (like from my brother) to play them. They cause carpal tunnel syndrome in my hands and cause problems with my girlfriend. MMO"s are evil.

I just want a game that I can take my time, level up at my own pace, and a game that finally ends, so I can take a break and rest my hands.

Seriously, what's with all these MMO's? Do they think we are all teenagers with unlimited amount of time to play? Even then, don't teenagers have homework and projects? I know I did. Good thing MMO's weren't around when I was in high school. I wouldn't have got all the A's I did get. I'm tired of them creating games that are just time hogs. I want a long game, yes, but not a game that doesn't end.

Nobody is forcing you to spend every waking minute playing an MMO. You only do that if you want to or if you wish to live up to some type of image which, if I might say, is a personal problem and not that of the MMO.

This is true, but there is a certain amount of social pressure to level up fast. Don't tell me you haven't seen it. WOW is full of it. The pressure is to level up to 85 as fast as you can so you can raid with your guild. When I first started there was pressure to level up to 70 so I could heal for Karazhan for my guild. If you want to raid, and be socially active, there are certain pressures. If you want to enjoy content with your friends and guildies, you need to be the same level (or close to it) with them. One problem I had in Star Wars The Old Republic was my brother was 10 levels ahead of me, and I just couldn't catch up to him. I just didn't have enough hours in the day to play. So I couldn't run any flashpoint with him, although he did run me through a couple flashpoints, but he was a much higher level, so I didn't get much XP, and not as fun when doing it with someone your own level.

When I'm playing a single player game, I don't have those pressures. I can play at my leisure. Another problem with multiplayer games in general is people want to rush through content, and not explore every nook and cranny like I do. I don't like to rush, I like to take my time and enjoy the content I paid for.

Then maybe you should just not play MMO's? I agree with you that MMO's are by and large horrible time sinks (Hi, Guild Wars 2, please hurry and come out!) but hoping that all MMO's everywhere fail and disappear because YOU personally can't handle playing them is a little excessive. How about you just avoid them and let people who enjoy them enjoy?

That said I hope the Elder Scrolls MMO specifically fails, the last thing in the world that I want is for it to be a raging success and have Bethesda use it for "inspiration" on the next proper Elder Scrolls game. Nothing can kill a single player game faster than obvious MMO inspiration. I'm looking at you, Kingdoms of Amalur, who had an interesting level up system and pretty decent lore but shot yourself in the foot with MMO like quests and UI that caused me to ragequit after about 10 hours of playing.

Everything I read indicates they aren't bothering to incorporate any (or barely any) of the gameplay that makes the Elder Scrolls fun. Only thing to look forward to this game is more lore, but now I'm even worried about that.
