Translation motels.

Well a couple of years ago I posted about housing crisis here that had been building for a few years. Highest immigration per capita in the OECD.

Borders have been closed for a year but 100 000 NZers decided to return home. Throw in free money via low interest rates and in some areas house went up +$40000- in a month. 20% taxfree capital gains per annum.

When lockdowns landed they more or less tried to eradicate the homeless by getting them into motels. No tourists as such (a few left overs and "overstayers"). They've been rolling over visas post Covid.

Anyway CFCs thoughts on our "emergency housing". Opposition has been two faced pricks (they started the flood) but the problems been building last 20 years.

Cost to government is $75million a year. Drop in bucket compared to Covid relief they threw about 50 billion at it. Drop in bucket really.

What's going to happen to the homeless once the tourists come back? Kicked out of the motels?

The homeless in my province were treated to the Social Service Minister's particular brand of elitist bigotry when she at first refused to let them into any of the unused mo/hotels because "it would cost too much to retrofit them."

Her idea of retrofitting meant removing ALL the curtains (window and shower), removing the appliances, kitchenware, covering up the fire/smoke alarms, and removing the paintings.

Her reasoning: All homeless people are mentally ill and all mentally ill people are ready to hang themselves at the drop of a hat. So they don't get curtains or cords (or privacy or even a cup of hot coffee or tea). Apparently lamp chains (those few-inch-long ones you use to turn a lamp on and off) are long enough to hang oneself with, and don't ask me why the paintings were removed. She probably thought they would either destroy them or steal them (yep, like anyone can walk out with one of those things in their pocket).

What is your "emergency housing" like? I think pre-fab houses are going to be the new big thing. Just because I happen to be looking at it, this is a 70 odd year old pre-fab house currently for sale in the UK, and I would live there if there was a job nearby.

Probably not they're paying a premium for the emergency housing and guaranteed occupancy.

Homeless was more Covid, it's people on benefits and families end up there (rental shortage).

And you it's hard apparently getting doctors appointments in various parts of the country.

Increasing your population 25% doesn't increase doctors, teachers graduates etc by 25% as it turns out.

It doesn't increase land area or GDP per capita by 25% either.

Yep recent report revealed the RSE visa scheme was if no economic advantage to the country. Pay and productivity were so low and the money goes to Vanuatu or wherever.

Lack of tourism hasn't hurt as much as Kiwis traveling overseas spent almost as much as the tourists arriving.

Some people obviously make money.

It sounds like New Zealand needs to jump start new housing construction. There is plenty of room so get to it.

Easier said than done.

Shortage of construction workers+ red tape+ retirements.

Construction isn't like developing the next generation silicon chip, vaccine or landing on Mars.

The problems you mention can be overcome.

If you can not do it, there is something wrong with your society.

Basically construction capacity can't keep up with demand. You have to train the apprentices, not everyone wants to due it the the older runs from the old apprentice schemes are retiring.
