Empire Total War Random Question Thread

So have they fixed anymroe bugs and implemented core features such as naval invasions?

Does anyone find the Siege battles as dull as I have?

I'm still waiting for them to cure the ludicrously aggressive AI and the fact that one-region factions have full stacks by the third round in the game.

i'd like to know which leaders are buddhist and how to convert cities to buddhism

There aren't any Buddhist countries playable, sadly.

So I re-installed the game to see if it'd be any better after 1.3.

I play as Prussia, I take Warsaw on my second turn. I offer it back to Poland in exchange for a peace treaty and 1,000 gold, no go. Next I try offering it back to them for just a peace treaty and nothing else. No go, even though I had decimated something like 70% of their military. So much for nations being more willing to go for peace.

Unable to trade Warsaw to Austria for anything, I just give it to Russia, since I can't hold on to it. Bear in mind, I'm facing -22/-26 happy or something like that, since it's foreign occupation of a capital region with few troops, all of the buildings damaged, and it was 100% Catholic at the time. The very turn I give it to Russia, it drops down to +6/0, even though all of those differences still hold true, except there's no troops holding the region.

Absurd. I didn't keep playing long enough to see if the one-region factions with full stacks was still a problem.

The one-region factions do still make full stacks.

Also, the only way to get rid of the unhappiness is to camp a full size army in Warsaw for a long time. I still got a revolt even with that, but the revolt gave my a 4 happiness bonus once I crushed it. Takes a very long time though.

Here's one, is internet required in at all to launch the game? (My other computer hasn't been connected yet). I really haven't gotten a straight forward answer for this after googling.

I think so, run steam offline... there is a way to do it not sure. I don't think you will be able to play though without an internet connection while installing but not sure. Final Answer= you can play without internet.

Another question, I don't seem to be able to zoom to my satisfaction during naval battles, especially on smaller ships, something I don't know?

P.S
Is it just me or does line infantry refuse to fire when placed behind stone walls? (Garrison so-to-speak).

Yes, that's a bug. It should be that when you hover your mouse over a stone wall, your cursor changes to a "hide behind" button where your troops will line up against the wall and around the corner. I've seen it when using DarthsMod, though for some reason it's not available in vanilla.

I used to play Rome quite a bit but its been awhile and was thinking about getting Empire. I usually simulate the battles since I'm never really any good at real-time battles at all but I would lose quite a few on Rome (especially naval battles) even when I was heavily favored. Is the AI any better on this front for Empire?

The RTS battles are really most of the game... if you simulate them (auto-resolve) then you mgiht as well play turn based games such as Civilizations or one of Paradox's games or some other TBS game.

Well, I usually do play Civ4 and CivColonization quite a bit but was looking to break up the same ol', same ol' now and then. I know the other Total War games have been fun even though I skip past the bread and butter of the game. I'll take a look to see what Paradox has, thanks!

I'm having problems with the nobles [female dog]-ing about taxes all the time. Is this a normal thing I should just put up with, or should I actually be worried about their demands?

Also, is there a way to lower taxes in an individual region, apart from making them tax-exempt?

And finally, is the best way to quiet down newly taken cities simply to garrison them with more troops, like in older games, or is there a new function I should be using/abusing?

Thanks. :) I just got ETW the other day, and haven't had much time to figure things out yet.

1. Discontent in a region leads to riots. While the letters of discontent themselves are nothing to worry about, the riots that come after are.

2. No.

3. That depends on how much resistance to foreign occupation the city has. Some larger cities, like Mysore or Spain will have over 20 points of resistance. Trying to garrison those is futile. It works for the smaller cities, though.

Dragoons are generally good for garrison duty, being easily recruit-able and having a bonus to garrison repression. I've also found the Russian poleaxe militia to be useful in this aspect, though they don't seem to have the bonus.

If a settlement has a large amount of religious dissent (6 units or so) you should consider sending in a missionary. New religions spread by a missionary gain about 10-15% per turn for the first few turns before it slows down, which is enough to make religious dissent a non-factor. Missionaries can convert rival settlements, meaning that you can convert a settlement before you invade it to minimise the religious dissent.

Putting down a rebellion gives you several points of temporary repression, which helps keep things in check.

Finally, remember that even if your populace is rebelling, the resistance to foreign occupation will still continue to go down. This is useful to keep in mind if you can't afford to move your troops out of the settlement to out the rebels down.

I have a question about troop placement. Do infantrymen directly behind another line of infantrymen with friendly fire on, shoot the friendly troops in front of them?

I know the game is called Total War, but the AI really needs to lay off. I picked France for my first serious grand campaign (I played around with Spain and Prussia to learn what was different from RTW/RTR). In the end, I figured Louis XIV would be pretty powerful and give me a good balance of sea and land action. Catholic Frenching Christ Almighty was I wrong (CFCA is a TM of France)--the French are a paper tiger with no capacity to protect her colonies and her homeland simultaneously, and is especially lacking in good research capacity (or I just got bad luck and spawned no gentlemen randomly until 1713).

All the minor German states except for Hannover and Saxony declared war on me, along with all the natives, along with the Austrians, Dutch and since 1721 the British. Spain has been utterly useless and has only succeeded at giving Britain an even bigger navy to blockade me with (although I suppose I should be thankful they actually honored their alliances and declared against my enemies instead of me). The last 15 years or so have consisted of me losing massive amounts of trade income due to these huge British and pirate fleets (seriously, the pirates have a 16 ship fleet--more than I have, consisting of mostly huge galleons and warships with a few captured trading ships). And the British have a fleet with three 4th rates and three 5th rates...I can't even begin to challenge it until my income increases. My net naval increase has been one captured Dutch 5th rate, and I have built a fourth rate and a fifth rate. Not nearly enough, and still spread out.

I've at least taken two Iroquois provinces and conquered Amsterdam along with Flanders, the Rhineland, and Wurttemburg (or however its spelled). However, nobody signs peace. Ever. I took 2/3 of the Iroquois, no peace. The Dutch refused to give me even one technology or 500 gold in exchange for sparing their capital from being conquered. Any diplomatic venture undertaken by the Court of Louis XIV since 1700 is an utter failure. Oh well, now I'm just smashing Dutch rebels every 3 turns until they realize independence is a pipe dream. And lamenting the plight of Louisiana under their new Cherokee overlords.

Wait, I take that back, I have had one diplomatic success. I managed to sign a single trade agreement with Prussia (which now controls anything in Germany I don't control except for Saxony, and most of Austria and Poland). And I had to fork over 300 gold to sweeten the pot enough for them to trade with me. However, its a small price to pay to improve relations and try and avoid another major war on my borders.
