If you're used to Civ type 4xes, Endless Space is more simplistic (every resource is generated and used in the same way, with the only decision-making involved which to specialise a particular system in; the tech trees are four wholly unrelated paths without prerequisites along a different path; there's nothing equivalent to worker improvements; buildings are mostly straight resource modifiers), the difficulty level low, and largely devoid of character. The gameplay is also more combat-focused despite the absence of a tactical combat system.

It has a nice resource monopoly mechanic, and the 'most systems have an exploration reward' encourages, well, exploration, but otherwise brings nothing to the genre. It's closer in features and depth to a turn-based version of Sins of a Solar Empire than a 'true' 4x (although with its last DLC Sins did actually add 'terrain' effects to space combat, something I believe is completely missing from ES - though since I never bought the ES expansion I can't be sure).

Just read reviews of this game and they are really good.

Anyone have this? I love Civ V, will this game do the trick too ?

i have and like it. has quite a bit of innovation to the 4x genre and beautiful art style. it mostly needs a readjustment of the ai on military and a couple of balance passes, but for the price it is definitely worth it.

It's 33% off at the moment on Steam - until Dec 2. Grabbed it yesterday and played it a bit.

My impressions so far: solid 4X game, really interesting innovations in the genre, very functional AI and fixes my main issue I had with Endless Space: the blandness and soullessness - it's a really nicely presented game with lots of atmosphere.

Not sure it will be as addictive as Civ, but right now, it's a breath of fresh air with its varied and different mechanics. And the presentation and "feel" makes me wish Firaxis had tapped into that same well of inspiration for Civ:BE.

Dig the weird fantasy vibe it's going for (much like Endless Space went for a somewhat alternative sci-fi vibe). Also: the developers must have mainlined the Game of Thrones show, the way cities pop up and the map in general feels a lot like the show intro. Also: Winter is coming! ;)

Much like with Endless Space, the tech tree still feels weaker and less interesting than in other 4X games, though.

I think Amplitude is a studio to watch, if they continue like that, I see a bright 4X future where we only really have Firaxis and perhaps Stardock in terms of accessible 4X games (unlike Paradox games, which are good but very different).

Only buy games in a Steam sale if it's currently a featured deal (front page) or it's the last day of the sale. Today Endless Legend is a featured deal so it's 50% off.

The UI seems very functional (good) but terribly ugly (bad).

Matter of taste, really. I take the minimalistic elegant UI over a "fantasy"-styled tacky UI any day. ;)

Just imagine that the base price is actually 50$ so that'd make the current price something like 66% off and you'll be fine ;)

I know right? I see offers in stores for 10-20% off and I'm like, you're kidding right? What a joke.

Especially when it is labeled as a door crasher for black Friday. Wow, $20 off! Try harder pls.

This game is simply amazing, design choices, strategy and atmosphere are all top quality.

I don't even like fantasy settings, but they have this own fantasy/scifi hybrid and an interesting world that it works.

The way luxury and strategy resources work are how it should be done in Civ VI. You really want the luxuries for the boosts they give to empire.

Almost all the factions are interesting and unique, I thought that the small amount of base units would bother but as you design new variants(like heavy inf, anti-cavalry inf etc, cheaper or expensive equipments, quantity vs quality etc.) it isn't such a big deal.

You can add new units from minor factions that you ally or conquer. Also they grant you empire-wide bonuses.

The whole empire controlling and expanding system is great, I especially love saving influence points for empire focus, which sets the empire to follow certain areas for set number of turns forward.

I was sceptical but I'm totally sold now, definately get this game.
It's constantly being updated, new free small add-ons and expansions are dropping every now and then.

I love Civ V, Europa Universalis IV and Total war series, but it's nice to have a new title in the club.

Anyone else having troubles running it? It worked first time out but crashes now when i try and start a game up.

I like the distinctiveness of the various factions. Makes BE look laughably amateur. they really are very distinct and unique. Not actually got into a game yet. Im still learning the ropes. My tendency was to go off exploring and pop as many ruins as possible. Im now starting to think that actually thats a bad strategy as you miss out on the quests that you can pop.

    Anyone got any Newb tips?

glad there is a thread to this. i havent played any other fantasy 4x games but this one finally looks interesting enough. i have a few of these 4x games (FE, SOSE, CivBE) in my wishlist but i'll probably pull the trigger on this one when it gets a 'package' deal with some dlcs. i didnt get civ5 until it had been out a year already. (doing the same with BE.) im thinking under $10 for my price range.

quill18 did some LPs and it looks interesting after watching the first one.

edit: i also own a couple i havent played yet, Gal Civ2 being on my to-do list.

I've put in about 2 hours and its simultaneously familiar and bewildering(especially how to deal with minor factions and Heroes). That said, I'm definitely interested. Given that I will be home quite a bit over the holiday's, I've got a project.:goodjob:

I picked up Endless Legend, and it is wonderful. My only major complaint is that the tutorial does a really poor job of explaining the game. Combat does take some getting use to, and I kinda hope the Civ devs take a look at EL for ideas on that front. It is kinda hard to explain how combat works other than to say it is a mix of Total War and Civilization V with limited stacking thrown in for good measure.

Each faction plays extremely differently from one another. Yesterday I played roaming merchants, who are well-suited to achieving an economic victory, get a cut of market transactions, can bar other factions from actually using the market, and can pick up and move their cities around. I also tried out Cultists, which is a one-city challenge heavily focused on assimilating minor factions.

My current game is with the Necrophages, a insect-hive mind faction that can never sign alliances or be at peace with other factions and turn defeated units into food for cities.

There's like, four tiers of diplomatic contact you can have with a faction. War, Cold War, Peace, Alliance. War is what you think it is, as is peace and alliance. Cold war is a grey area where your units can attack that faction's units in neutral territory.

Overall, I'm having a ton of fun with this game. It runs well enough, looks and sounds good, and plays pretty well.

Just finished my first game and barely lost a science victory on normal lol. Haven't played near enough to be even halfway decent. This game is pretty damn fun though.

Anyone else play this game yet? What's your thoughts? :)
