EOC2 - Ruling the Waves

I built the Pentagon instead of theMilAcad in Istanbul. There is an extra movement point available with the Pentagon as well as the additional unit per army. And we seemed to be doing okay when it comes to promoting generals through the "hawse hole" (I think you guys call 'em "Mustangs" but we are supposed to be a naval power :) )

Reasoning behind the three overstrength armies: Iberia/England is reachable in two turns max from Hannibal's home island and I wanted to have a hefty and highly mobile defense force there, counting on the "leet" Sips to create their own leadership for the Punic campaign.

Also, what is Hannibal up to out of Sulcis on the Dutch island? Is he hunkered down there?

Re hospitals: we may not need them, unless Theo makes a real push towards tanks...

Well... the simple solution there: Push Back!

Sulcis is now part of the glorious Ottoman empire, along with two cities (one with rubber) on an island up north where some dutch cities were. Guess I should have mentioned that in my log....

Just to let you guys know (b/c Bede's been in a whip-crackin' mood lately) Tal had something going on this weekend, and was to come home on Sunday. I expect him back on the boards sometime tomorrow...

Back!

Will get to it sometime today, am still a little tired after driving half the length of England at 1am...

Hey guys,

I'm going to have to bail out until at least July 19th. There is just too much going on right now.

The game is pretty much over but I will watch your progress with interest. If it's still going after vacation, I'll check in and see what's up. But I think you all will probably end it before then.

Well, have fun. Not too much of a naval challenge in the modern era. You might consider making a new mod sometime with these changes to make it more challenging:

1. C3C v1.22
2. SN increase movment by 1 and SSN increase movement by 2
3. SSN increase offense by 6
4. SSN increase transport capability by 1
5. Decrease cost of cruiser and SN
6. Increase AA of BS
7. Increase movement of BS by 2
8. Increase movement of carrier by 2 and transports by 1
9. Decrease defense of ironclads by 1
10. Cut cost of Tactical Nukes in 1/2
11. Decrease cost of AEGIS to 140
12. Increase movement of DS by 1
13. Add detect invisible to Carrier
14. Increase Carrier transport load by 1

Anyway, have fun....

PF

Sorry about the delay guys - I've had a couple of things come up, and the SGoTM just took wa, way too long... Should get this done today.

Pre-flighting... Read the memoirs of the illustrious generals from whom I have taken over - boy, were they devious! I have a lot to live up to...

Diary of 1700 AD

Received an odd communique from the Commanders of two of our vessels which are on active duty near the Carthaginian town of Rusaddir. Their mission is to interrupt the Carthaginian supplies of rubber near that city. The Commanders requested name changes for their ships to SS Trojan, and SS Trojan II... I granted their request with some puzzlement :hmm: I forgot the matter entirely when a Carthaginian war fleet appeared off the coast of Hippo.

Diary of 1705 AD

The Commanders of the "Trojan" fleet seem to have let their mirth get the better of their gunnery. Their first barrage damaged barely one rubber tree...

Otherwise, lots of logistical shenanigans, but nothing newsworthy.

IBT - 3 veteran infantry appraoch Hippo. The massed ranks of Sipahi check their powder...

Diary of 1710 AD

A large fleet of Byzantine ships approach Hippo also... Interesting! The armed forces are gradually being built up, and improvements of our land proceed at a frightening pace.

A terrible and bloody battle was fought near Hippo - two units of our Sipahi perished to the frankly unbelievable resistance of the Carthaginian infantry. However, one of their number, a certain Murad, seems to have leadership potential. Perhaps he can form the battered remnants of our troops into an effective army.

IBT - more Carthaginian troops approach beleaguered Hippo...

Diary of 1715 AD

Finally the Trojan expedition pays dividends! No more rubber for you! My aide-de-camp mentioned that this might lead to a population explosion amongst the Carthaginians. The rest of my general staff thought this hilarious, but I still do not know what on earth they are talking about! I will get to the bottom of this, and if they are mocking me, heads will roll...

Meanwhile fighting has intensified near Hippo, with a brief naval bombardment near the harbour (we won). A detachment of horse was annihilated by our Sipahi also, after which Murad took his new army and destroyed two infantry regiments outside Hippo. Casualties were heavy, and I can see how he got his nickname "Bloody Murad" - his scouts reported more infantry approaching Hippo.

My sources tell me that every tile on the isle of Bergen has been improved.

IBT - One of our frigates at Hippo was lost; more troops approach; treacherous Theo has got into bed with Hannibal and signed peace. Again, my ADC made a reference to operation Trojan - his humour becomes tiresome.

Diary of 1720

More naval engagements near Hippo, an enemy frigate was sunk. The desert outside Hippo is filled with the bones of more Carthaginians, this time 3 infantry and a cavalry regiment.

IBT -

Diary of 1725

Theodora has annoyed me, so I renegotiate a lapsed spices deal (6gpt?) before booting her enormous cavalry army from English soil. This will free up our armies there once we have transports, and she won't be able to stab us in the back once our armies leave for Carthage...

More military build up - upgrading all these ships is going to be expensive! We are on the verge of a breakthrough, and some of our geologists have discovered a substance known as black gold...

IBT - More Carthags approach Hippo - their commanders should be shot for their rather lacklustre approach!

Diary of 1730

The man who discovered the secrets of refining this Black Gold is a great scientist by the name of Thabit ibn Qurra. I have sent for him to discuss his plans for a wondrous creation of some sort. He informs me we have 3 reliable sources of oil, near Antalya, Stockholm, and Gouda.

Murad the butcher continues his grisly work at Hippo - how do the Carthaginians think they can win this war of attrition? Whilst we occupy their best troops here, we are preparing to unleash an almighty assault on all fronts.

IBT - nothing to report.

Diary of 1735

Very little of interest now, except a huge battle outside Hippo. No surprises there then...

IBT - nothing to report

Diary of 1740

Sank a Carthaginian frigate off Salamanca. Bloody Murad continues his work.

IBT - nothing to report

Diary of 1745

In preparation for stepping down from command, I have prepared the following briefing notes.
#There are troops waiting in Stavanger for the creation of transports from the galleons already there. Other troops on the island can join the task force once the transports are upgraded.
#There is a small force going up towards Carthago Nova - that is one supply of Carthaginian horses which they won't keep for long.
#The troops in Hippo are now ready to break out! As well as the 2 armies, there are 5 veteran infantry, 9 veteran Sipahi, and one Elite Sipahi.
#Combustion arrives in 2 turns.
#The stack of Byzantine units ejected from Nottingham only made it as far as Warwick! They can be ejected or ambushed, according to the conscience of the next Commander...

Available forces include:

17 Rifles
22 Infantry
57 Sipahi
5 Armies

17 Frigates
21 Galleons

I think that should be enough for the coming campaigns ;)

Also, don't forget our Scientific Leader!

Roster check:

Scoutsout-Up
Bede-pacing the quarterdeck
SeasonsOfWirth
Tallanas-Punic Punisher
Planetfall-retired with honor

looking at Tal's log...

....say Tal, didn't you hand me a big stack of barb horses to deal with in the SGOTM??!?!?!

Seriously man, those are Byzantine CAV... stop that, it isn't funny! :p

(Actually, I do find it rather amusing...)

I'll try to work this in tonight after I finish a set in SGOTM...

Who me? :mischief:

Would I do something like that to you, Scout? :shakehead

Well, ok, I did. But those Cavalry were there when I got here, I swear! Blame Bede!!

When I pinged them from our land, I thought they would make it back to Byzantine land... I miscounted, and didn't anticipate their making landfall near Warwick! At least Warwick's expanded now, so we can kick them again

Or you could :ninja: them...

Edit: how ungrateful, I hand him 57 Sipahi and a Scientific Leader and all he can focus on is the enormous SoD... Typical!! ;)

Actually, Bede and I share responsibility for that stack, although they had a viable reason for being there during Bede's turns, the same can't really be said of mine..... :mischief:

Having that stack in our land represents an opportunity.....If they are there they are not at home, or sailing somewhere else. Whip some artillery out of the English and Spanish towns and when the time comes just take 'em apart. Three Sipahi armies, some artillery, and infantry for defense in the towns...it's a Stack O' Death alright, but not ours!

I'm sorry I didn't get to this tonight. Thankfully Brother Bede hasn't already :whipped: an artillery out of me. My SGOTM2 turns took a bit of time.. playing carefully as we approach 'endgame'.

Good grief...

You're safe from flagellation, still within the 24 and besides I lost my cat

I started to play my turns last night and had some problems. Running Scandisk and Defrag on my hard drive took quite a bit of time (Defrag was still running when I went to bed).

By tonight I will know whether or not I fixed the problem... It's one I had in Bede01 as well - something sometimes hangs up the unit cycling thing...

Tonight I will either have fixed the problem (and posted a turnlog) or concluded that something is hosed with my 1.15 installation (and request a skip).

I'm sorry I'm holding up the team.

I feel like living dangerously. No pre-flight, no Byzantine boot.

IBT - Carthage and Portugal sign peace.
Build some stuff, train some troops. Carthage starts Universal Sufferage.

Turn 1 (1750) Science down, Combustion next turn. Kill a Carthaginian Infantry and a couple of Guerillas outside Hippo, promoting an infantry to elite taking out the last 1 hp G. We capture Rusicade.

Boot the Byzantine Expeditionary force out of our lands. As an act of good faith, I trade 3 lux and some Coal to Theodora for Silks.

IBT - combustion comes in... and that means Hannibals age of sail is about to come to an end; set queue to Mass Production

Turn 2 (1752) Upgrade some Galleons to Transports

IBT - Henry wants to trade World Maps, I sign him on against Hannibal again for some lux

Turn 3 (1754) Send a Carthaginian Galleon and Frigate to the bottom, land some troops on Carthaginian soil. I might be able to capture something next turn... to quote a friend of Brother Bede's... lalala worker moves...

IBT - Carthaginian Navy attempts to look menacing...

Turn 4 (1756) Lose a couple of wooden ships, but sink a few too... lalala forest chops... looks like I was right about something, we captured Oea. Oooh! I was right twice! We got Hadrumetum too! Dangit... I hate when fun turns end.

IBT - Some Portugese Galleons move... a Carthaginian Guerilla retreat a Sip out of Leptis-something-or-other...

I swear I'm gonna shut down MapStat...I know everybody's got Fascism to trade, no stinkin' gold, and recently captured Carthaginian cities aren't real happy about having been captured recently...

Turn 5 (1758) Send a couple more Carthaginian Frigates to sleep with the fishes... Dangit, If those Destroyers and cruisers don't hurry up and get on line, they'll have to wait for the next war to get broken in. Position some units... lalala pollution...

IBT - another Carthaginian Guerilla retreats a Sipahi, Mass Production comes in... set queue to... Flight... Say Bede, Have we alread captured Arnhem in this game? :mischief: WooHoo! We have our first DESTROYER! (Now I need to find something for it to destroy...)

Turn 6 (1760) Get a fresh Guiness out of the fridge, whack a couple of Carthaginian Guerillas... (These 4-horse Sipahi Armies ROCK!) We take Leptis Magna... and just for good measure, burn it to the ground. While I'm at it, I take Sabratha. Wake the Settler in Hippo... advance some troops on Carthage.

Let's see... Sanitation is known... and I know we need hospitals for all of the little specialists with funny hats that Bede is so fond of... Dial up Theodora, and get Sanitation, Fascism, WM, 180gpt 30g. Extract Dyes and 38gpt from Henry.

IBT - Some Carthaginian Frigates and a Galleon emerge from Salda... I can't read the name of the town underneath the stack I dropped off last turn... anyway, the Carthaginian Navy just met our Destroyer. :devil2:

Turn 7 (1762) We sink a frigate and SS Lollipop (our destroyer) retreats to get back a hit point. We capture Saldae... do some worker moves... Capture Theveste (Sun Tzu's) Found Rock Pile Cafe, claiming some silks. The Battle for Carthage didn't go so well, and the Sipahi retire the field.

IBT - Some Carthaginian naval units slip out of Carthage. WLTKD kicks off all over the place...Our people want to build the Iron Works... probably someplace we didn't own last turn...Saldae Riots (okay, WLTKD everywhere but there..)

Turn 8 (1764) Sink a Carthaginian Frigate, make that 2, and a Galleon... Sink 2 more frigates (2 of the 3 that snuck out of Carthage) Promoting one of ours...lose a frigate, sink a frigate (there's a song in there somewhere) and Hannibal's galleon is now uncovered... and I think we've got a DD that can catch it next turn... calling the destroyer "DD" for Planetfall...:D Thinking I'd plant a spy, I see we've already got one in Carthage. Hannibal is now down to 2 Galleons and 2 Frigates. F3 Check... Um... why do we have a SGL fortified in our Capitol?

To heck with the SGL.... I'm having too much fun... let's see... got some armies healed up...So I capture Carthage, Mausoleum of what's-his-name, etc.

@Sesn: At what point is a civ officially "gassed"?

Take a few sips and go after Utica...some of our sips are a little banged up, so I use a half strength army and finish off the garrisonin Utica.

Oh dang - I had a transport load of Sips outside Theveste that I was planning on unloading and using against Utica... shuffle 'em up the coast and drop 'em off next to Cadiz.

IBT - the stupid Carthaginian Galleon runs away....

Turn 9 (1766) Capture Carthago Novo, and Cadiz...and all of a sudden I can't seem to find the stupid Carthaginian Capitol... hmmm...

My teammates might be able to help me find it, I think I'll post the save and a screenie...

After Action Review:

The Good: I took some cities from Hannibal

The Bad: I made some alliances we didn't really need...

The Ugly: Um... ask Hannibal!

Depending on whether we even care about our rep at this point, I think this is a good time to let the next player have, while there's still something left of Carthage to smack around. (It is FUN!)

I've also got stuff scattered around all over creation, so giving the next player a turn and a half to get things reorganized is only fair, IMO. :D

Besides, I can't find the stupid Carthaginian Capitol... (must be the Guiness). I thought it would either jump over to the island that's north of our little 2-tile island, or up the Carthagininan mainland... but it's somewhere else. :crazyeye:
