EOC2 - Ruling the Waves

Almost the right order, Bede. I believe it's actually like this:

Butz - on deck
Bede - after Lenny
Sesn - building turns
Planetfall - started GA
Scoutsout - the next better player (UP)

EDIT: I'm not sure why you didn't build the FP, PF. (haha) Basically all the FP does for the city that builds it is act like a super courthouse. The primary benefit is the boost to the OCN. Therefore, it probably would have been better to build it rather than lose the 111 shields.

I didn't build FP because:
1. income was about 40s/turn
2. hadn't read all the posts and didn't know if we were going for a conquest or another win.
3. I know in C3C init the FP should be built about 5..10 tiles out
4. In C3C 1.22 FP should either be built close to Palace OR in a city with a couple of wonders.
5. I don't remember the corruption tweats between 1.15 and 1.22.

If we are going commie with a huge empire, the 111 shields won't matter and we'll gain more by putting both FP and SPH in cities with GW's. Unlike Palace, I dont know how to move the FP if you change your mind.

Scoutsout-- again, build FP whereever you like.

Coffee in, later.

PF

"Got it", though it will probably be tomorrow before I can play. Things got "a little tedious" in another SG I'm in, and it took me a couple of night just to play 9. I'll finish the other one up tonight...

Iznik needs to build Copernicus', and we need a FP somewhere. Anybody have any suggestions where? I may try to play this later on tonight. Tomorrow night latest.

Edit: We had an auto-skip in the SGOTM2 I'm in, and I had to pick up a turnset there. Sorry for dragging, but I'll get to this game tonight. Any suggestions from the team will be appreciated.

Turn 0/1000 AD

Golden Age, -25gpt, Astronomy in 1

City Check - change a clown in Aarhus to a tax collector
A little MM in Odense, hire a tax collector, shave 2 turns off court
Rush Court in Bergen

Diplo Check -
England is up Chemistry
Spain down Education

I buy Chemistry from the Netherlands for Education and 420g
Sell Theology to Portugal for 20g
Sell Education to Spain for 19g+4gpt
=====
IBT - Renew trade with Portugal, Trading Horses, Wines, Ivory for Dyes
We learn Astronomy, set queue to Navigation, Due in 6 at 70%
Scroll through our cities quickly, change queue in Istanbul to Copernicus', leave palace pre-build going in Iznik for Magellan's Pre-build. MM to get "Palace" in 16 instead of 18.

Turn 1 (1010)
Do a little mining around Bergen
Wow! That's IT?!?!
Wake some galleys and move them to be upgraded.
The Universities are kicking in, Navigation now due in 4.

Mugla Market>Duct
Palace Expansion
=====
Turn 2 (1020)
Upgrade the rest of our galleys to Caravels
take a break and log onto CFC, to see where PF wanted that settler to go...
=====
IBT - Edrine Court>University
Konya Market>University
We lost our supply of spices
=====
Turn 3 (1030)
Trade Chemistry to Spain for Spices, 1gpt+20g
Trade Ivory, Wines, 140g+5gtp to Carthage for furs
Okay, PF wanted the settler to go 3NW of Aarthus...
=====
IBT - :zzz:
Bursa Court>Knight

The English are building Copernicus'
The Byzantines are building Copernicus'
=====
Turn 4 (1040)
Bergen is now pop 7, zero growth, FP due in 20.
Found Riza 3 NW of Aarhus, set queue to Library. (It will be productive when FP completes.
I have a knight in a Caravel headed to incense to play whack-a-barb
=====
IBT -
Uskadar Knight>Knight
Izmit Knight>Knight
=====

Note to team: The real strenght of the Ottomans is the Sipahi. We need to build some knights, and build cash reserves to upgrade knights to Sipahi when we get Military Tradition. We can take the next land mass of choice with Sipahi...

Turn 5 (1050)
Take Science down a notch, still gets Navigation in 1.
Our FP build in Bergen has gone UP a turn. Ratchet lux up to 10% to see if WLTKD will help.

Bursa, at 25spt, is our next most productive city. Change build queue to Cathedral (6) to change to Palace next turn as a Smith's Pre-build.

=====
IBT - we learn the secrets of Navigation, set queue to Banking
Trondheim Library>Market
Several cities pop off WLTKD, and we get another palace expansion
Forbidden Palace now due in 12
=====
Turn 6 (1060)
Let's see... switching Iznik to Magellan's will waste 134 shields. Magellans only costs 400s, while Smith's costs 600. At it's current rate, Bursa can build Magellan's in 14 turns. I'm on turn 6 in a GA... check the log... the GA began on PF's 6th turn, so we ought to have 10 more turns left in the GA. This is a calculated risk - that we can build Copernicus' before the others get Navigation...

Trade Salt to England for 5gpt. It's a paltry offer, but it brings us to +22gpt. The 10% lux hurts, but we need it for the FP build.

@ Team I'm doing some things here that the next better player will need to look at to make this work. I have switched Aydin, Izmit, and Uskadar to Colosseum. these are Bank pre-builds, due in 6, with banking due in 5. It will be important to swap these to banks to get these built during our GA. I have switched Bursa to Magellan's, hoping to get that built about the time we discover Economics. We can then do a massive shield dump from Iznik (Palace pre-build) into Smith's Trading Co., and get a nice tri-fecta of Copernicus', Smith's, and Magellan's.

A couple of worker moves, and that does it for turn 6.

===
IBT - Hannibal wants to trade World Maps, I decline.
The Carthaginians are building Copernicus...
=====
Turn 7 (1070)
...some worker moves...move that knight towards Sesn's little project town...
I have one Caravel headed north to explore the oceans
Spain offers 20g+WM+9gpt for Astronomy, and I take it. This brings our treasury to 223g+32gpt (bear in mind we're spending 10% on lux to cut our FP build down...)

Our military is at 80 units, with unit support of... 80 units.

=====
IBT - :zzz:
Edrine University>Colloseum (Bank Pre-build)
Antalaya Aqueduct>University
=====
Turn 8 (1080)
Do a quick diplo check. We are still up Navigation on England, Spain, Byzantines, Carthage. Up Education and Chemistry on Portugal. Up Astonomy on Netherlands.

I hope our monopoly on Navigation can hold for just 3 more turns... that's when Copernicus' is due in Istanbul.

Our Navy is in Salonika... Once we get Economics in hand, and some banks built in our core we should start building knights to be upgraded to Sipahi, bee-line towards Military Tradition, upgrade the knights, and take out the dutch. :hammer:

IBT - :zzz:

Turn 9 (1090)
Quick Diplo check - we still have a monopoly on Navigation
...unload a knight in Incense and whack a barb...look at that stack, and wish I'd brought 2 more knights along...
Some worker moves, some more exploring, and land ho! We've discovered another island to the north, and there's a border already there!

the bane of every Succession game player...Turn 10 (1100)

Quick Diplo check - we're still up Navigation! [dance]
With Copernicus' due next turn, if we're still up Navigation next turn, we will have our own private wonder cascade in a few more turns with Smith's and Magellan's. A middle ages wonder trifecta, if you will...

EOC2_TRIFECTA.jpg

FP due in 8, but we won't get it then, because the GA will run out.

Take science down to 50% still gets us Banking next turn.

Do some worker moves, put our knight in Incense...

Dang...end of my round.

After Action Review: I pretty much went into "builder mode" on these turns, and did a little trading. The next ten turns can really set us up to really dominate this game any way we choose.

I should probably apologize now for taking a detour from the suggested builds. Rather than build Copernicus' in Iznik, I set the build in Istanbul. Istanbul should probably start on a University next turn.

I originally thought I'd pursue Magellan's in Izinik, but when I saw that I'd waste 132 shields, and Bursa is nice and productive, I decided to take a calculated risk and build Magellan's there, reserving the Palace pre-build for Smith's Trading Co. Magellan's will put us on even terms with all these Seafaring Civs, but Smith's is such a huge economic boost... We will get Copernicus', the next better player should get to start the game with a wonder splash.

If we are still up navigation at the beginning of the next turn, we should have no problem getting Magellan's as well. Pursue Economics, and we should be able to do a massive shield-dump into Smith's Trading Co. at Iznik, before the AI even get that tech.

I must apologize again, for I am about to get obnoxious, and tell someone else how to play a turn.

@ Next better player: We are due to discover Banking next turn. When we do, please, please choose "What's the Big Picture?", and use that to get to the F1/city screen. Go through the cities, and change anything and everyting set to "Colosseum" to build "Bank". I intended to use the Colosseums as Bank pre-builds, and I fear I cut some of them awfully close.

The only build order I didn't depart from was "Build a FP Somewhere". I got it going more-or-less in the middle of the former Viking lands. It shows due in 8, but our GA will run out before it's built. With Lux set at 10% to trigger WLTKD, it really cuts down on the waste in that city. We might want to keep the lux at 10% until we get our FP built.

If we get the FP and Smith's online at roughly the same time, our economy should get something of a boost...

I hope pursuing the "wonder trifecta" is okay with you guys. It's a bit of a risk, but I thought it was worth taking. I'm rambling rather badly now...so I'll go ahead and post > > The Save < <

It's been so long since I hit a trifecta, I almost forgot what it meant. Nice parlay, there. You played in "Guys and Dolls" right..."I've got a horse right here..."

Well done, scout!

Hmmm, this is stagnating so I'll just post (bump) a roster:

Butz - UP
Bede - ON DECK
SesnOfWthr
Planetfall
Scoutsout - trying to parlay the trifecta

Scoutsout - Very nice job building. Once these wonders, and our blessed Sipahi, come online it's lights out. It doesn't look like there will be much naval warfare unless we manipulate things in that direction. I still think the Dutch are the most logical next target, but also the civ that we'd be able to have the best naval battles with.

I wouldn't sweat that too much... seems like all of the SGs I'm in came to a screeching halt this weekend... :(

I'm just hoping Butz isn't so much of a warmonger that I confused him with all those bank pre-builds... :p

Yeah I noticed that too about this weekend. Well, except for the ones I was up in, then they were screaming for my head. :lol:

I wouldn't worry too much about Butz. I find most people have no problem understanding things where money is involved.

If the game comes back to me between Thurs and Monday, please skip or swap me as appropriate. I am moving and am at the mercy of the mighty Comcast.

Since Butz has not been heard from for 72 hrs, picked up and played last night.

0-1100
Wander through the towns and the map. Not much to do, everything is well set for the trifecta.
Hire some tax guys becasue I can and it boosts our income a bit.

Isabella comes calling and wants a straight up map deal. Take hers, 13g and 3gpt instead for ours. A Gems deal expires and ELizabeth is not interested in its renewal under current terms. She wants all our spare luxuries and Navigation...the tabaccy on the island ain't that wacky!!:smoke:

Copernicus comes in and Istanbul starts a bank. All colesseum builds swapped to banks. All of whihc will complete at same time as we learn Economics.

1-1110
Load some knights into a caravel to go seek promotion against the barbarians and SS Magyar Bane set sail for incense.

2-1120
William has learned Metallurgy. wantsto trade it for Astronomy and Banking.

3-1130
Haul Elizabeth to the peace treaty table and get 45g plus 12gpt for our wines.
Do the same to Hannibal and get 14g+7gpt for our Incense.
Do the same to Theodora and get 19g+3gpt for our ivory.
Gallop a knight out of Incense and kill a Magyar

Willie comes calling again because he thinks were trespassing. Just on a pleasure cruise, Will.

Byzantines start Magellans.

4-1140
YeeHaw. We learn Economics and Zakanya al-Razi is born (SGL). Can you say Bach's Cathedral? Research to Music Theory in 4.

5-1150
Metallurgy is now generally known. We can buy it from Theodora for Banking and get another 870g from her for Banking, better than market. Banking worth 1273 at monopoly vs Metallurgy worth 1149@4th plus 870 to us for a premium of 746g

English start Magellan's.

Spanish start Bachs.

6-1160
Spanish offer Music Theory and 15gpt+34g for Economics
English have Music Theory and will offer it and 17g+10gpt for Economics
Hannibal will sell Music Theory for Banking
Take Hannibal's deal and see what more I can squeeze from the Queens for Econ.
Zakanya trades in his lab coat for choir robes.
Follow up deals with the Queens aren't worth it. Let 'em learn it on their own.
Set research to Physics at max

7-1170

8-1180
Magyar Bane arrives at Incense and knights immediately play whack a barb and one gains promotion

9-1190
Vet knight attacks Magyars again and dies!

10-1200
Cities are building troops:muskets, cannon and knights. Caravels are heading for NE coast and to Alesund on Netherlands Island. I'm thinkng a two pronged attack on the Netherlands: knights heading south from Incense on a pillage and raze mission. Combined force north from Alesund (cannons, muskets, knights). We have good trading opportunites for MilTrad when it appears (tech for tech if you can do it). Magellan's did not complete this round, nor the FP as GA ended too soon. Both should complete on the next round.

Kudos to scoutsout for the setup

Butz - Up
Bede - collected
Sesn - skip from Thursday to Monday
Planetfall - on deck
Scoutsout - placed the wager

@Bede: Nice! That screenie of Bach's threw me there until I read the log! :lol:

Some questions/comments:

I can't recall if Bach's has a continental or universal effect...but if it's universal, we might be able to take the lux slider down and still keep WLTKD going in ... whatever that stupid town is where I started the FP...

Do you think our FP City would have a shot at Newton's if we immediately started a palace build there after the FP completes? (Perhaps cash-rushing a market first for happiness?) What are our chances of getting Magellan's before the AI get ToG?

Does Istanbul have a University? With Copernicus' there, and "Ottoman State U", it should be a science powerhouse...

Another thought...IIRC, we don't have any workers on the "old Island"... and steam power is not far off...

I noticed the lack of workers but didn't do anything about it. Can put together a gang pretty quickly on the home island on the last turns of researching the last MA tech.

Bachs is continental only so usefulness is limited but but was the best use of the SGL I could think of as it will keep the homeland happier.

AI is at least a couple of tech away from Magnetism IIRC and will learn MilTrad first anyway, I think, so Iznik(?) could boogie right from Magellans to prebuild for Newton.

I think there's a hidden benefit to Bach's - cutting off the wonder cascade at the pass. If we can complete Magellan's before the AI get ToG, then we're in good shape to get Newton's. Newton's, Smiths, and Copernicus' will go a long way towards closing the gap between us and the AI as far as discounted research rates go. And if we can take a few members out of the AI tech-trading cartel... :devil2:

Since it is Thurs, and Sesn is moving, it looks like I'm up.

Great plays last turn. Not sure if will be able to play tonight, but will be able to complete on Fri.

As much as I'd like to grab it, my service is being transferred today, but I won't be in until Sunday-ish. :(

Wasn't able to complete yesterday. I'll complete today and then if Sessions is back he can play on Sunday, we swapped places. Offline for some chores.
