Here it is - my first real wonder graphics: Epicurus' Garden.
Tanks to Ukas for letting me base this on his Bathhouse gaphics.
From the pediatext:
Epicurus (or "Epikuros" to be correct) was born on the island of Samos in February 341 BC. He started studying philosophy as a young boy.
In 306 Epicurus went to Athens after many years of travelling in the politically turbulent Greece. Here he founded his own school of
philosophy (and the first collective in the world), known as "The Garden".
Epicurus' philosophy was based on the idea that pleasure and pain were the ultimate way of "measuring" good and evil. Epicurus loathed both fame and wealth and tried to live a peaceful life with his friends. He declared that freedom, friends and philosophy are the basis for a good life.
Epicurus died peacefully in 271 BC. With his last words he reminded his friends to remember his philosophy.
Unfortunately Epicurus was almost forgotten in the Middle Ages because of the crude propaganda of the Christian Church that said that his
philosophy was based on gluttony and selfishness.
Suggested effects:
- requires: Philosophy
- obsolete with: Monotheism (or Theology)
- 3 happy citizens (local)
- 1 happy citizen (global)
- 4 culture
The text on the splash is from the Wall of Oinoanda, which was built to remind the citizens of Epicurus' philosophy. I can't read Ancient Greek so I don't know what it says (I hope it isn't something silly)....
