[NFP] Ethiopia Update Discussion Thread

I'd also like some type of mechanism for joining with other civs to exterminate a specific secret society. Like a contest to hunt vampires etc.

Presumably secret societies are totally optional like Apocalypse mode, but I think they seem more fun than that mode.
The Voidsingers unique monument having a great work slot and their cultists creating relics means I guess they're technically the tourism society? Visited Cthulhu And All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt
For sure. Apocalypse Mode is basically just an enhancement of natural disasters as well as some added tension in the endgame by basically giving you a doomsday timer to win before the planet explodes

Secret Societies however seems like it'll add multiple possible new playstyles and mechanics throughout the whole game and therefore should be much more appealing. Still an optional toggle of course but yeah

Btw I presume you could select multiple of these game modes at the same time if you want? Seeing as every DLC pack contains one I can imagine you'd end up with one hell of a weird setup further down the line if you select everything that'll be available by then

The new district seems like the first significant shakeup exclusive to the DLC. New civs are one thing, and new resources and wonders are relatively small in their impact.

But the Diplomatic Quarter looks like it completely changes the way City-States are going to work, and look set to give important yields around diplomatic relations with other civs. It will be quite a big change vs players who don’t have the Ethiopia pack.

They could not even come up with a new icon for the new district? :nono:

I actually like the sounds of those fantasy secret Societies. Much better that Apocalypse Mode.

Cant screenshot at work but in the screen with diplomatic victory hub you can see they are playing as Ethiopia and there are swordsmen (?) right underneath it with african art styles. Is that just the normal African art for swordsmen or are those swordmen UUs?

Edit: You can see they can produce swordsmen in capital so definitely not a swordsman UU, just cool African swordsman art I never noticed before (is that new also?)

It’s the regular African swordsman. The same graphic has been in the game since at least R+F.

Rock-hewn church seems to be the Ethiopian unique improvement ... or possibly a Wonder (which works better as far as I’m concerned).

No Shotelai

I guess we can assume it will be the Mehal Sefari?

I wonder if the voidsingers offer you even more slots for any great work/holy relic or if it’s specific. Kongo will almost always favor them though if given the option I’d suspect, as it gives them faith they sorely lack and great work slots they relish.

At 4:46 in the video, they mouse over the obelisk and it shows that it holds a great work of any type. There's a new relic at 4:58, which seems to work just like any other relic and can presumably be placed into the obelisk.

Also of note, it took two tries to get a relic. So, maybe it's a random chance.

I am just disappointed that you can't choose your abilities for Secret Societies, it's always the same four, so it's literally what my hidden agenda mod did xD

But I do like it, it utilises the system in a unique way, and remember, I'm sure it'll be easy to mod this stuff out/change it.

After the soothsayer and aliens and zombies of the last update I was really hoping for something a tad more grounded in history, so I was very pleased with the first few updates in the video. Even the first two secret societies seemed pretty believable and the old gods faction was passable (I do enjoy a bit of lovecraftian lore every now and then :)). Theennnn... they got to the vampires and now I’m afraid they lost me.

i presume it could be a different ethiopian UU. The Civ 6 tradition is to add leader specific, leader relevant units as LUUs, and the Mehal Sefari are Menelik’s royal guard
