Euro 2004 squads

Is Heskey (Liverpool) any relation of Emil Heskey the Birmingham City player

Interesting so instead of being the national coach he secretly wants to manage Sporting or Benfica? Seems idiotic to ignore Porto because they are "too far away" considering that they have dominated Portugese football this year and are in the CL final...

Like I said, he arrived wanting to buy a war (because that's his concept of motivation psychology: an adversary that hates you), but he got unlucky to be here precisely in two of the gretest seasons ever of a Porto team playing with 9 portuguese players in the starting 11, so in the end he just reserved his stubborness against Baía...

Now for the starting 11, that's another story. I feel he'll play with:

Ricardo

Paulo Ferreira
Fernando Couto
Jorge Andrade
Rui Jorge

Costinha
Petit

Figo
Rui Costa
Simão

Pauleta

Well, Ricardo has been terrible the entire season. I'd favour Moreira. Ricardo carvalho should be a no brainer instead of Couto and Nuno Valente is not brilliant but still better than Rui Jorge now. In the midfield Maniche should play instead of Petit, because the latter brings nothing offensively and will get a red card at some point. Finally, Deco is playing way better than Rui Costa, can play the full 90 minutes and at least scores a goal now and then. Rui Costa however has 10 years of routine and experience in this team, so i don't know. Rui Costa won't last a full game though...

Just three strikers in the Portuguese squad? And Postiga? Is he likely to play much?

Sneaky, col, but we all know this thread was posted before his move. :p

Nope.

Portugal only plays with a striker anyway, and two wingers, so I guess there was no need for a fourth one (actually there was no fourth one...).

What made you think Baía would get called anyway? There was not a single chance of it happening.

Interesting that he called Moreira after saying no one would play both in the U21 Euro and in the Euro 2004, but Moreira won't play in the Euro anyway.

I think you just answered your question! If Moreira and Bruno Vale were already chosen for the under-21's (and, as you mention, Scolari said he wouldn't call nobody from the under-21's) who would be left to fill in for 3rd goalkeeper? We simple didn't have any credible choices left!

It was more less accepted that he would call Hilário from Nacional. That's the one I was expecting.
Vítor Baía would be impossible.

They didn't take Micoud? Well, their fault. :p

And we should nationalize Ismael before someone in France actually bothers to look into it. :mischief:

Still a great squad of course...

Yeah, I think that Mexès and Micoud should be in the team, but I get the impression the french will only stop using their world and european champions when they can't walk anymore...

Didn't Germany had a problem with overusing former legends in their team a few years ago?... :mischief:

So, when's the Mannschaft announced?

I'm not sure actually, but I guess not before the season has ended. That would be either next week, after the last league matches or in two weeks, after the cup final.

It's by the way usually referred to as Nationalmannschaft. ;)

Just looked it up, it's scheduled for the 24th, thus next Monday.

What? No deutschenationalmannschaft? :(

I guess I'll settle with Die western und östern Deutsche Nationalmannschaft. What do you think of it?

There's just one now. And where I come from the one was referred to as "Deutsche Nationalmannschaft" and the other as "Die Nationalmannschaft der DDR". :p
