every time I"ve been flamed to the point of abuse..

They can ban IPs but then if the poster wanted to, they could simply go on the internet elsewhere and re register. Also banning IPs can hit other people if its dial up as there isn't a unique IP.

When you dial-up again, you get a different IP address so I think that it wouldn't work; if they had dial-up they could simply sign out and sign back on.

In that case, the moderators could block the entire IP address range assigned to that provider. It's actually as simple as blocking a single address, but it's more drastic. Anyone using that same IP range would be blocked also.

How about sending a cookie to a banned poster to identify him? I mean why not, cookies are sent by just about every site that you shop on, whats the difference. I know you can block cookies on your PC but usually the people who flame probably aren't smart enough to know how to do that. It would help somewhat.

You have no idea how pissed I would be if I couldn't get onto CFC because some jerk-wad flamed someone else, and banned the IP range for my broadband.

That being said, it's easy enough to change your IP. I do it so often at work (setting up new 'puters from an image) that I can do it in my sleep. In fact, I think I have, sometimes!

Sabo, what you said last is probably best. Send a cookie. Of course, as you said, this isn't perfect. But it is better than banning a single IP or an IP range. it just affects the one puter. It's not as if there aren't CFC cookies on the 'puter anyways, as I never log in, unless my wife blows the cookies away. So you could just have the cookie put in there, "banned" and have it on the server side so that if the banned user comes in, they send a new cookie to the 'puter with the banned code in it.

Edit: Very frustrating, isn't it? It would be nice if people were a bit more mature in how they handled differing opinions.

I don't think I like this! I post at the university I work at and I know of at least two others who do so from the same university. So if they do something and the mods block the university's IP adress range, I can't post either... I don't think that's fair!

Yes, my IP range was blocked a while back because of someone else, so I couldn't log in for a couple of days. I posted a thread somewhere in SF at the time.

Yes turner I agree, the best solution is for everyone to act decently and not like a bunch of drunken high school kids. Unfortunatly people are people and so some tend to be idiots. It's like some people when they get in their car, they think they are indestructable all of a sudden, and they send their brains on vacation.

I've seen people do things in their cars that they NEVER would do in pubic "cutting people off / cutting in line/queue" just like here, people get behind a computer and they think they can be who ever they want and act the way they want. After thinking a day the IP suggestion doens't sound like a good idea, I don't know about the cookie idea though, I don't know too much about how a cookie works. If there are any web designers out there they could probaby tell us...

99.99% of the people I've met here on CFC are generally intellegent, insightful, and decent people, it's that .01% that ruins it for everyone.
