Exactly what nations encompass the "Free World?"

Which of these nations is in the free world?

The only free countries are:
Cuba
China
N. Korea

The rest are ruled by capitalist pigs!

/sarcasm

How could anyone vote for Cuba or China as free...

ouch. i suppose forced indoctrination of janissary warriors doesn't constitute repression?

The people composing the Janissary corps were only pressed into service until the 17th Century. But that hardly constitutes repression. After all, these people moved up in status in the Empire, not down. The only reason they had to convert to Islam is that Christians weren't permitted to carry firearms in the Empire. Why that is is anyone's guess.

EDIT: To give you an idea of their prestiege, before the 17th Century, when Muslims were allowed to enter the Corps, Muslim families would quite often try to smuggle their children INTO the Corps.

The devshirmeh system was implemented also as a deterrent, towns that did not resist Ottoman occupation were granted immunity from the "human tax." Which, as I said, only existed until the 1600s.

I know what you meant.
I wasn't talking to you, though I quoted your post. :) It was mainly a response to Cheezy the Wiz's post.

I wasn't challenging whether modern Turkey has quieted people, I was asking for some backup to the claim, because I've never heard anything about it either way.

For me : The European Union, US, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand Mexico, Israel, South Korea, Croatia, Albania, Norway, Iceland, Montenegro, minor Euro states, some Caribbean and Pacific islands
Borderline : Turkey, Serbia, Macedonia, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Panama, Suriname, Botswana, Namibia, Kenya

Howcome Brazil and Argentina are border line? They're democratic and at least in Brazil the press is free. Brazil is a free country, the only problem is that freedom isn't working. :crazyeye:

It isn't freedom that isn't working. We weren't doing that great under the authoritarian regimes of the past either.

Brazilians are not working.

I'm pretty sure Freedom wil have its positive effects on the Brasilian economy in the long run.

There is a something that withholds the Brasilian economy from growing though: The rotten idea of agricultural subsidies in the US and EU. A severe blow against a free economy which should promote competition.

For the most part, North and South America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Japan, South Korea.

Japan, Australia, Philipines, South Korea, and

Poland!

(Just to make sure I dont forget about Poland :p)

Mostly goof-voters who checked every single option without giving it any thought - though I suspect you'll find a few Commies in there as well...

I must say, maybe only in comparison, but Ghana is surprisingly free for an African nation. They have everything down to freedom of religion, and free politics.

My list

The Free World

Pakistan
Iran
North Korea
Saudi Arabia
China
Russia
Afghanistan
Iraq
Burma
Lybia
Sudan
Syria
Vietnam
Cuba
Cambodia
Turkmenistan
Khazakstan
Zimbabwe
That looks about right in my book. ;)

Japan, Australia, Philipines, South Korea, and

Poland!

(Just to make sure I dont forget about Poland :p)

Only five countries? But you did include Poland! :goodjob:

And I'll go back and read the things on Turkey.

What's the other world called (those excluded from the free world list)? The slave world? The land of doom? The house of pain?

The enemy or some such like that. Whatever a politician says it is.
