I'll vote for that. It won't require as much trading and wonder building as launching a space ship, but it will probably take longer (in hours, not turns) to play, just because of the warfare.

if you really want to have a nail-biting game, make it an AW (Always War) variant. That means no peace with anyone, except possibly on the turn you meet them. You can, if possible, swap techs for techs that turn, but no gpt deals, then or later. By the end of the turn you meet them you must declare war. And stay at war with everybody until they are dead.
The early turns are nerve racking, as you just have to wait for the AI to expend it's attackers on your defenders. But once an AI has done it's worst, and you have survived that worst, then the tables turn.
