Experiment 626's Solo TDG

I'll be sending positive thoughts for you, Mr. President! :)

The appointment has come and gone, and I'm still here. (I think  ).

The lower 1 and 1/2 feet of my colon is extremely inflammed. Everything else is fine including . . .

NO CANCER! [party]

Next appointment is February 22nd. I think that there's a strong possiblity of me starting my Japanese Conquest adventure before then. I'll start a New Thread for that game.

Stay tuned, sports fans, and thanks for the support and well-wishes. :thanx:

:edit: I just noticed that today marks the one year anniversary of this thread! What a long strange trip it's been! :bday:

I'm so very happy for you that it's not something more serious! I know how frightening it can be to have so many tests over a long period of time. I'll assume they can treat what they did find. :)

I'll be looking forward to following your next game. :D

Yippee! [party]

We're all looking forward to the next game, otherwise this wouldn't be such a hot thread! And stop irritating your colon, it's your friend! You wouldn't want to handle the work it does:lol:.

I want to see 7 Samurai Swords a Slash'en!

And stop irritating your colon, it's your friend! You wouldn't want to handle the work it does:lol:.
Ever shake hands with a colon?

'Hi, Marsden, I'd like you to meet my friend, Mr. Colon. He has his own primetime show, Private Dirty Jobs. Now where did he go? He was right here with me. Mr. Colon?'

I wonder what is the Japanese word for 'colon'. :crazyeye:

Like the others, I'm glad your are cancer-free and treatable. :goodjob:

Now,

what about this game you promised?

Geez! Nag, nag, nag!

Let's kick back into Civ3 Complete, shall we?

A while back (before the health scare), I decided to play the Japanese on a Regent level game (hopefully eligible for the Hall of Fame . . . I'll have to look again at what makes a game HoF-eligible. Maybe Marsden could just tell me what settings to hit on the game menu.)

So: I'm the Japanese. The AIs will be Portugal, Ottoman, Iroquois, and Celts. The landmass will be Pangaea, so I won't have to mount an invasion of the Beta Continent. All Victory Conditions (except Wonder) will be active, but I will be going for a Conquest victory.

Here are the house rules that I used in this game:

1. I am not allowed to Research any techs before 1000 BC. This will improve my trading skills.
2. My first 2 builds in the Capital city must be Scouts to practice exploration, contacts, and trading skills.
3. I am not allowed to build any Ancient Age Wonders.
4. I cannot build any Military unit until horsemen and/or swordsmen are available. (Though, there’s a bit of discussion going on between denyd and TruePurple about this).
5. I must always have at least one Worker for each city and I am forbidden from Automating them. They must be used to Irrigate brown, Mine Green, and connect the cities with Roads. Roads = Commerce and Commerce = Gold and Gold = Research, so the more the better.
6. I am to concentrate on expansion, improving my lands and contacting everyone else on my landmass. I am also to use galleys to try to reach other landmasses and meet all of the AIs in the game.
7. I am not allowed to build more than 2 barracks, libraries, harbors or markets. I am forbidden from building temples, colosseums and city walls.
8. I am to try to claim at least 1 Luxury resource, and either Iron or Horses (both would be best) by 1000 B.C.

Let's discuss these rules:

  1. With Conquest being my objective, are any of these rules obsolete?
  2. Are there any new rules that should be implemented to help me learn more?
  3. After building my Capital, what should my build order be?
  4. Should I build a strong Defender in each city?

Personally, I think that #1 should thrown out. Someone (Marsden, maybe?) suggested that choosing a proper Research line is imperative. #7 could probably go, too . . .

Let the Discourse commence!

1) You will definitely want to research.
#2) goes. Since Japan isn't expansionist ;)
I assume you will be on a standard map? If it's large, you need another AI for the Hall.
I would ignore all wonders - really not necessary for a game like this.
4) should probably go, too - you only get 2 content citizens on regent, so you start to need to be able to build warriors for MP. And you need them for scouting.
7) You will want more than 2 barracks.
8) Interestingly, you get to see the horses before anyone - but of course, your UU doesn't need them... just needs iron :)

1. I am not allowed to Research any techs before 1000 BC. This will improve my trading skills.
You will want to research, but you could scale this back to research only two techs before 1000 BC. Your call.
2. My first 2 builds in the Capital city must be Scouts to practice exploration, contacts, and trading skills.
Scouting warriors would do the job.
3. I am not allowed to build any Ancient Age Wonders.
Statue of Zeus gives Ancient Cavalry, which could be helpful in a Conquests only game.
4. I cannot build any Military unit until horsemen and/or swordsmen are available. (Though, there’s a bit of discussion going on between denyd and TruePurple about this).
This one has gotta go, unless you are planning on peaceful conquests.
5. I must always have at least one Worker for each city and I am forbidden from Automating them. They must be used to Irrigate brown, Mine Green, and connect the cities with Roads. Roads = Commerce and Commerce = Gold and Gold = Research, so the more the better.
Keep this one.
6. I am to concentrate on expansion, improving my lands and contacting everyone else on my landmass. I am also to use galleys to try to reach other landmasses and meet all of the AIs in the game.
I am to concentrate on conquest, improving my lands and crushing everyone else.
7. I am not allowed to build more than 2 barracks, libraries, harbors or markets. I am forbidden from building temples, colosseums and city walls.
City walls you might need, but temples and colosseums aren't worth the shields. You will need more barracks, libraries and markets. Harbors on pangea?
8. I am to try to claim at least 1 Luxury resource, and either Iron or Horses (both would be best) by 1000 B.C.
Oh, yeah. And the sooner you get the luxuries hooked up the better.

You may want to start a new thread on this and have a link to it here.

Let the Regency of Experiment 626 begin!

I've been thinking about this one. I don't usually pay much attention to any correlation between 1000bc and how many techs I've researched. I think the reasoning in the first game was that he could get several techs from goody huts with his scouts...those, along with his starting techs, would give him a good supply of trade bait.

This might be a good time for him to learn about the differing benefits of going 100% research vs 0% and purchasing techs for gold. 50% research is rarely a good idea. Since the AI researches so slowly at Regent, 100% would make more sense to me. Just my $.02. :mischief:

Just read through these: HoF Rules

1. No.
2. No, but you do need to scout your area, try a chariot.
3. This is silly, but don't do the other and try to build them all, which is even sillier (unless going for 20k). Statue of Zeus is cheap and useful but it needs ivory. Actually, that's the only one I'd really suggest building.
4. Warriors upgrade to swordsmen, chariots upgrade to horsemen, an early archer rush is not out of the question.
5 ,6, and 8 are solid guidelines for any game, although ships arent as big a deal on pangea, but beware of an AI starting on an island somewhere.
7. You want barracks in all core cities, maybe some libraries but not too many, you really don't need to research past chivalry. A temple in certain spots can expand the border to help with attack and defense. Don't forget, enemies can't use roads in your borders, also to grab a resource nearby expanded borders can help.

Glad to hear all is well, or at least better Mr. Pres...., or is that Emperor.

Looking forward to the new game, and glad to see we are still going Japan and Conquest....

Just be careful, to chart, which I think you will, you need to win by 1750. No problem.

I'm in the process of getting my comp upgraded. A friend of mine got a very nice refund from the I.R.S., and is upgrading his comp. He sold me his 'old' motherboard, processor, video card, and memory sticks. It should be up and running on Saturday. A technoid friend of mine has to come over, and hook everything up. I went ahead, and bought a new tower that comes with a new power supply (500 Kilowatts (?)).

When it gets up and running, it should be pretty sweet. :D

Hey, everybody!

It's me, E626. I'm using a friend's comp (and username) to post. The computer upgrade didn't go as planned. I haven't been able to access the net for almost 3 weeks now. The computer is in the hands of the computer gods now (i.e. I took into the Computer store for them to fix it). I should know more next Wednesday.

Thank you for your patience. I'll post again when I know more.

E626 (not seliasthemage)

After a month of not being able to post:

I'M BACK! [party]

The downside is: I lost everything on both hard drives. I used my D Drive to back-up my C Drive, and those idiots at the Computer Store erased them both! :wallbash: :ar15:

I'll have to re-download Sn00py's Greener Terrain and the Smiley Face mod (I wonder if that's HoF legal).

Once I get some much need sleep, I'll start getting things back to normal.
