Ok, new plan might just be Colonial Outposts --> Colonies via East India Company NW --> Cities via Governor's Mansion building.
-Still basically purchase-only puppets.
-Still limited in buildings and units that can be purchased.
-(Colonial Outposts) can still start with a few fundamental buildings (Granaries, Workshops, etc.)
-Still affected by loyalty (optionally).

Prestige would allow Colonies to function as Slave or Penal colonies via a set of reforms.
Seminaries would take the role that Mission colonies did.

Basically, uber simplifying (good for me, hopefully good mechanically). Needless to say, I'll probably have to let my ideas sit for a while, so I'll move onto other updates after I've added the new Tribes and wrapped up Exploration and Attrition. But I'll take into consideration any opposition to the change in the meantime.
 
If now colonies are limited to another continents, and east India company became more powerful, shouldn't it be moved up the tech tree?

Nah, I don't think I will be limited to other continents. That said, EIC is at Economics (in ExCE; as it always has been) - I think that's late enough :p
 
Colonies should just remain bound by the distance from owned borders, I think, as it was before. Carthaginian and Russian empires had colonies on the same continent. :p

I like that streamlining idea, but does it mean that the cool citadel graphic under the city will be also left behind with the removal of Fort Colonies? :sad:

That's what I had in mind when I dismissed the idea.

Colonial Outposts can still have them, but if you build the EIC they'll have to be taken down by the capitalists that move into your colonies :p

I have turned off policies and tribes in the options file

Could another mechanic work? Like a Great Person can build colonies overseas but settlers build contiguous or same continent colonies?

These could replace great person tiles with something more interesting built around their yield. Religious settlements, trade posts, Penal/labor colonies, etc
 
CBP compatibility: Feathers requires trading post, but in this mod trading posts cant be built next to one another, which causes an issue if you have adjacent feathers tiles.

p.s. feathers are awesome! The icon is so nice, and using the bird effect is neat.
 
I'm not 100% if this is known or not, but it seems that other civ's dont prioritize ruins as much since adding the patch. On my last playthrough there were two occasions where there were ruins touching the border of an AI's second city with military units garding the city. I also had time to walk all the way around amountain range to get to one of the mentioned ruins.

I can't find the Consulates in the pedia, are they deliberately hidden? I'd like to know what each can do before I decide they're worth settling a city nearby or not.

Yes, but hover over their icon and you get their help text.
 
I found some culture related buildings in the civiliopedia. I hope they're related to that mod. :D
