Exploration thread

:wow: How far away ARE the other inhabited continents?!?

Good thing we didn't just sit there on that little shallows!

P.S. Is it possible Rik turned off (or turned down) the chance to sink at sea? Is there anyway we could know? (I'm getting used to the SDK with Civ4, and can't remember what's possible for C3C)
It just seems we've had a pretty amazing run of luck so far… and I'm wondering if there is something else at work?

I wonder if there are any closer civs we're missing. We need to get both pink dot and brown dot settled and making curraghs!

We were very lucky to catch them sailing by. I'm willing to bet that that island is connected to their home island though. They would need to research Alpha before building any curraghs, so they would probably not yet have gotten to the point where they start braving the high seas.

EDIT@General_W: No, we've lost two curraghs at sea on the first turn. Right now it's 3-2 in terms of successful turns at sea, so we're just extremely lucky that it's the same ship that has survived all of those time, allowing us to get this far.

I just had a crazy thought. Look at the following two screenshots:

The first is our beloved Chamsuri finding the northwestern outpost of the FREE lands, a small one tile jungle island near some shallows. The second is our late CC The Chamber exploring our own northwestern outpost, a small one tile jungle island near some shallows...

So, a question for someone with some spare time, is it possible to take our own larger home area, and fit it in five times around the torus so that it perfectly links back to itself again? :crazyeye:

Good spot, Niklas!

We definitely need more curraghs, to explore the E passage (NE of TA), and the N passage where CCTC was lost.

I have started putting something together in the editor, I wont have it done today as I am going out this afternoon but maybe tomorrow or monday.

I drew out a crude 1/10 scale map and it rap around. Not only that but the NE/SW also had an island, passage. However when I tried to increase the sacle it didn't work out correctly.

When I first started this problem I was guessing that the 5 islands were in a cross shape but was not able to fit it onto the map. The way they offset the islands could see it fit. However this also could just be wishful thinking.

If our ship survives check for those whales up there next turn.

Hold on to your hats... it looks like we may have finally found Free's homeland... similar to what Niklas predicted!

Very exciting!

From the Turn update:

They don't have whales, they have fish. It does look like they have hills in the fog.

I would go clockwise with the boat, assuming they started in the same place on the island.

Agree, we want to take a look at their cities if possible.

Chamsuri shall sail clockwise. Any progress on the editor expiriments? I'm tempted to go buy some doughnuts and try wrapping a piece of paper around one. I have a paper due tomorrow, then there is Easter dinner this afternoon, etc. I don't have much time to expiriment myself today. :(

I am working on it right now, here's a quick screenshot of where I am currently up to: -

This is the first time I've used the editor and its proving to be harder work than I first anticipated, I can't seem to find a tool to copy and paste whole areas of terrain from one area of the map to another, that would make life a lot easier!

Great start Aigburth! You don't need to copy the whole terrain of course, just the outline as you have already, but you know that of course.

Looking at it thus far, it seems a bit cramped to be as my guess, but maybe just maybe...

It does seem to put FREE much closer to us than originally thought but this is not really inconsistent with what we know of the world. There are unexplored shallows to the NE and we know nothing of the seas to the west.

That is indeed great work Aigburth! By the time we have new curraghs we will definately have some good ideas about where to send them!

Good morning fellow councillors!

Having spent most of this Easter weekend locked away in the cartography room I am pleased to advise having finally completed my speculative map project!

I started off by drawing our home island and other explored areas, including what we believe to be the northern tip of the FREE lands, in detail with all observed terrain types and bonus resources. I then proceeded in a southeasterly direction to plot the same landmasses and sea-lanes in a repeating pattern.

I endeavoured in trying to achieve an accuracy down to the last tile, the final piece of the map I drew was the sea lane connecting the final landmass to the north west of our own island, can you believe that it fitted PRECISELY to the area of the map I first drew two days previously!!

Here is a screenshot showing that northwestern passage: -

Here is also a copy the biq file if anyone wishes to take a look: -

This, of course, does not necessarily mean the map will actually look like this however I would suggest there is a very strong possibility it does, in any case it is certainly the best guess we have so far.

I am wondering whether I should keep this map up to date, adding terrain, bonuses and cities as we discover them, do you think there is any point to this?

 So I was right, it actually worked! And our musings from the beginning were correct also, everyone is the same distance from everyone else! I would be very surprised if this is not the exact setup of the map. It would be just wonderful if we were the first and only to have realized this. :D

Great job Aigburth!

EDIT: Yes, I think there's a point in keeping the map up to date, at least for the actual terrain. The resources don't seem to be identical, so perhaps no need for that, but for the rest it would be nice if we could actually continuously verify that the hypothesis is correct.

The interesting thing would be that anything that one suicide curragh sees is applicable at the opposite end too.

Great work, Aigburth!

However I don't consider the effort useful to keep track of the newly recorded topology - we can see it in the saves. Verifying the assumptions should take place of course.

Nevertheless, a great cognition that does a great job for our exploration strategies! :goodjob:
