Hi,
I could've put this question on my other post to with my other question but I couldn't think of my other question. Anyway, I have the sailing tech and I have access to ogalleys and work boats. I don't think that work boats can go far away from the coast and not galleys, either. I want to explore the waters because my civ has reached its biggest possible size at this point. Can someone tell me what I need to build or what tech I need to learn to get a boat far away from the coast?

To build boats that can travel off the coast, you need to research astronomy. Once you get that tech there are several boats you can build. With only Astronomy you can only build Galleons (or East Indiamans if you're Dutch). The other boats, however, require other technologies.

Welcome to the forum you two.

I think it's worth pointing out that you don't need to wait until Astronomy. With Optics, you can build caravels. Caravels are ocean worthy vessels that can also explore other civilization's territory, even if you don't have open borders with that civ.

Probably also worth pointing out that caravels can't carry troops/settlers/workers (except portuguese version).

They can carry spies and missionaries though, useful for exploring.

And how could I forget the best units in the game: Explorers! (And scouts).

They can carry spies (who can pop huts even guarded by barbarians) and missionaries though, useful for exploring.

And Great People, useful for a Great Merchant trade mission who also do not require open borders.

And how could I forget the best units in the game: Explorers! (And scouts).

Summarized and added 3 things.

heck...I never realized GMs did not require OB and I've been playing this game for ages :)

You know, I've noticed that dragonfly creates a lot of threads with questions but I've never seen him once come back to any of these threads and post a response. Makes you wonder if he's even looking at this advice. Anyway, just an observation.

8 threads for 12 posts... just an observation as well.

There's always the thread 'Quick Answers/Newbie Questions' in general forum if you have many short questions.

thanks guys, I did learn a lot from your advice. I read all of the replies, btw. I just don't reply if I have nothing else to comment on or ask. Thanks again. :)
