I'm trying to think of species that have gone extinct in the Star Trek fictional universe. Sadly, google's being no help since the word extinct keeps triggering sites about STIV (extinct whales). So far I'm come up with:
tribbles*
humpback whales*
the T'Kon empire
the Iconians
Avian Xindi
the planet that sent Picard that flute

(*maybe not extinct due to time travel)

Anyone remember any others off the top of their head?

1. Don't call 'em species I don't want to get in that nightmare again!

2. Why do you care?

3. That one group of aliens that founded all the other life in the galaxy, they're extinct.

Are you referring to the Species movies? I'm not sure I understand your nightmare...

[ubernerd]I'm writing a fanfic story where a species goes back in time and retrieves breeding populations of extinct species for a zoo collection.[/ubernerd]

Right, the Progenitors! Thanks!

Take a look at the "Perfection KOs creationism thread"

Stop saying species

But that sure is nerdy!

There was an episode in TNG where they fly into the debris of a battle that transpired like a thousand years ago between two extinct species. There was a booby trap (hehe... boobies...) and something happened... can't remember exactly, I'll try to find the episode on the net if you want.

There was another episode in Voyager where two races created AI robots to fight their war for them, but then the robots turned on their creators and wiped them out.

The episode of TNG (probably my favourite) where Picard has to find a bunch of relics which hold the key to Human, Romulan, Klingon, etc's shared DNA. There was this race which existed like 4 billion years ago, which was alone in the galaxy at the time, and they decided to put their DNA onto a bunch of different planets to see if life would grow as a result. That race is extict.

Well, there's another 5 for your zoo. I can't remember what any of them are called though.

The Husnock, who once destroyed a federation colony, were extinct thereafter by a godlike creature on this planet, a Dout, who lived there as human with his human wife. She died because of this attack, so he killed all Husnock.
The Minosians with their drones.

In the TNG episode "Arsenal of Freedom" we have three extinct civilizations.

Two of them got wiped out fighthing each other. The third supplied both of them with arms and got wiped out by their own weapons running amok. I forget the names of the civs. Googling it now...

superslug, I believe you are refering to the Preservers?
and when did tribbles go extinct? I just thought they ran out of favor as party tricks after ST:TOS.

I don't think the Tribbles went extinct. Just all of the tribbles that were in the Klingon empire boundaries were wiped out. Atleast from what I inferred from the DS9 episode that revisited the topic.

What about the Cardassians after their capital planet was destroyed by the Domnion?

Cardassia was not destroyed by the dominion. Only the cardassian capital was (and that brought Cardassia on the side of Federation during the final conflict)

That's good because Cardassians are awesome. They're evil in a smart and fashinable way. Ever since the Klingons and Romulans turned gay and allied with the Federation, the Alpha quadrant lacks an evil empire.

Man I hate those Cardassians. They're the most redundant race in the Star Trek Universe. They're no more deviously evil than the Romulans, and no more militaristic than the Klingons.

Personally, I'd like to see the Federation be the evil empire

But that's off topic...

the first one wont be usefull for his zoo thing.
the god guy didnt just kill all of them in one moment, iirc he made them NEVER HAVE EXISTED type thing. so going back in time wouldnt help you get to them.
ofcourse i just realized that in this case, the attack on his planet (and wife) wouldnt have happened then. wierd.

Hehe, the attack on the planet happened before the Dout guy wiped them from history, therefore the effect of the attack (destroying the colony) would have already happened regardless of the action of the Dout guy after the attack.

In other words, the effect of them existing MUST have occured for them to have never existed.

If there ever was a good use of this smiley, it would be now... :crazyeye:

no problem, just think of it as a giant EU ;)

How about those people who lived at hypersonic speed? Original Star Trek - drank the water and you sped up to their level but burned out and died.
