extreme "widescreen" appearance after the movie ends

I'm having a problem with Civ3. The opening movie plays just fine, but when the game itself starts, the display squishes down from the top and bottom, making my screen look like a movie that's been done in widescreen format, only it goes too far, so that it's almost impossible to see anything. I have Windows XP and an Nvidia Geforce4. I have an ancient Windows 98 with onboard graphics, and the game plays just fine on it. I've tried messing with my resolution using the KeepRes=1 command in the .ini file, but all that does is affect the opening movie. The game itself stubbornly stays in this ultra squished widescreen format that is so severe as to make the game unplayable. If anyone has any thoughts, I'd certainly appreciate the help.
