I would have to disagree. During the early to mid 500's in particular the Byzantines were a major player in southern Europe. Just look at Justinian and the Gothic War of 535-554.

Every old nation has been destroyed, you can start a new "Byzantine Empire" since no one else has taken Byzantium/Constantinople as starting location, just fill the starting template in.

EDIT: Abaddon just signed up as a nation in the Area (by PM) so its no longer free to take, but feel free to start your very own empire somewhere else like Spain, Greece, Denmark on any of the other areas that are still free.

Due to a mixture of abandonment and plunder most roman roads and fortifications have become useless, set up a project if you want to restore some in your country, i'll put the major connections on the map.

You can create a Berber state based in Gibraltar, or other location close to the straits though as Israelite pointed out you cannot start in North Africa.

If you hurry with orders i'll include them in the update though i will post the update withing 2 hours.
