Failed to Initialize Renderer

In any event, this is a blatant and unforgivable failure by the company. This is not a minor issue, and there is no way with even the most basic testing this could not have been discovered. Kudos to the techs for the help and dedication, but the company is ****
Yeah because they did NO testing. What are you on? Somehow this problem got through, which seems to be affecting only a few video cards running a certain platform with certain conflicts. There are at least 4 members of Firaxis working to try to help at 8:20pm on a night when they rightfully should be getting drunk. It will be fixed in the next few days, no doubt about it. Get over yourself!

C'mon, guys. It's not like Firaxis did no testing. Nor, to be fair, is it like this is just affecting a "few video cards." It's a LOT of video cards, actually, but I'm sure testing was done.

It's a major problem, affecting a lot of people, which is why we need to concentrate on fixing it.

Are you kidding me, almost everyone with an ATI card here and at Apolyton are **** out of luck. That has to be a few hundred by themselves. Extrapolate to the general populace, you probobly have thousands. Firaxis screwed the pouch, and at a scale which is professionaly embarrassing. We are not talking about a font disagreement or a messed up image, you can't even get it to start.

As I would expect the techs for any company that produces crap to be doing. I would actually have expected them to do it before hand. But again the blame lies on the company as a whole and its leaders, tech or other. I did in fact say...

Kudos to the techs for the help and dedication

Is that the ATI driver version, How do I check my DxDiag?

Click Start, Run, type "cmd" hit enter, when the OS window pops up, type "dxdiag" and hit enter. I'm not sure if that 8.18 is valid, mine's a 4 someplace, but it works fine for everything else I have played on it.

who says they should be getting drunk? you get drunk when you are finished with a job. you are sorely mistaken when you use the word few. if yours works, shouldn't you be playing?

This reminds me of a line from Meet the Parents. "Ok, well don't you think that the Samsonite people, in some crazy scheme in order to make a profit, MADE MORE THAN ONE BLACK SUITCASE?"

Obviously everyone who has the affected ATI cards has a problem. But the fact remains that it's only a few card models that are affected.

ATI has a large portion of the market.

So we are talking about DirectX driver version 8.18. That reads 6.14, which may be the problem.

This is what my Init.log says. My gut tells me it's a DirectX problem.
Oh, I also changed my CivilizationIV.ini file to force 1280x1024 resolution to match my desktop, but have had the same error at 1024x768.

5 ati models equals a TON of manufacturers. Mine is made by Sapphire. Shall we begin to compose a list of manufacturers?

(a handful of video card models with this problem) * (a whole bunch of people that have bought these models) != a few problems. Just because the word "few" is in there doesn't mean it's minor.

Affecting me as well.

ATI 9600 XT
Running latest 5.10 drivers
Already had DirectX 9.0c

Got error

Reinstalled DirextX 9.0c from disk

Got error

Uninstalled driver and reinstalled from ati.com

Got error

Uninstalled driver and installed Omega version of 5.10 drivers

Got error

Any other ideas?

And thanks Speaker, I know it can't be easy wading through a buch of Civers locked out of the pearly gates!

There are 2 driver numbers for the "same" drivers. If you look under Options, Details under Advanced Display Settings, there is:

2D Version 6.14.10.6575
Display Driver Version 8.18-050914a1-027256C-ATI

but let's not bite the hand that feeds us.

Huh?? Funny I don't remember getting the game for free. The way I see it we are the hand that feeds them. And now we get it up the old wazoo because Firaxis didn't put out another say $3000 dollars during their development cycle to make sure that this wouldn't happen. From what I have seen this is more wide spread than you think. Just my 2 cents.
P.S.- I got the game to load and run on a board that has no 3d acceleration and the monitor will only allow 800x600. Go figure.

I still cannot get the DXSETUP on the Civ4 CD to load any new drivers onto my system. Certainly there's nothing in DXDIAG with today's timestamp.

IS Firaxis working on this??

I grabbed the microsoft downloader and it did the same thing, I'm thinking its a "everything is up to date" type of thing. Might be wrong though.
