Error:Creation failed: Could not initialize DirectX9

Hi everyone !! I dread and do not know that to do. I have examined the all the manner of forums. Has Studied official and unofficial sites. And all ways of the eliminating the mistake, which I have found with reference to to my mate not give positive result. In general no result not distances. I so suspect that can be a deal in some adjusting the monitor. Well much want to play in Civ 4. That to do? As be? Prompt although anyone, anything. The Parameters of the computer are enclosed in file. Beforehand thank you.

Hey guys, I had this same old problem happen to me earlier. Game just crashed on me and whenever I tried to run it again, my monitor would flicker on and off until that error popped up. I went into dxdiag and ran video tests, I kept getting errors that 3d would not initialize though when I tested another game it still worked, very odd.

And by the way, I'm on a Nvidia 7900 gs; so this error/problem isn't an ATI only thing.

Well here's what I did and it completely fixed it, WITHOUT having to play windowed like some are suggesting.

First off I restarted my pc. I went into display properties and even though my monitor itself was being displayed at 85hz, under monitor settings it was at default 60hz. So I set it to 85hz and after it set, my mouse movements and everything were accelerated back to normal. Before then, since the Civ IV crash everything was a little sluggish.

Anyway, that isn't really the fix for everything as the 3d problem was still there. So what I did was went into my monitor properties, and rolled back to a previous driver. Because I had read not long ago anyway, that it isn't always a good idea for you to install monitor drivers from Windows update or even your vendor's site. So now with a generic windows monitor driver, everything is as it should be.

Game started up right after doing this. So check into maybe uninstalling or rolling back your monitor drivers. This might've just been a fix for me, but it's worth a try to anyone dealing with this issue.

Let me know, for those who still get this problem, if it helped or led you in the right direction to fixing it.

I realize its been just over a month since last post... sorry if thats old...

I believe specs are irellevant. I was playing perfectly fine (albeit with video memory error) for quite hte long time, and in a wide variety of combinations and specifications (all with same computer tho).

Here are my specs:

Windows XP Professional (5.1, build 2600)
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.20 GHz (2 CPUs)
1022(4) MB RAM
DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

Radeon X300 Series, 256 MB, latest drivers

As I said, all was working perfectly fine... And although I've done a ton of editing, once i went into the CivilizationIV.ini and edited it, this error would appear upon loading, preventing startup. I went to reverse the changes and it persists... WTH? I certainly believe this is a full blown bug rather than a drivers, etc, issue.

Hope this helps..

I take it nobody with this problem bothered to try my solution that worked perfectly for me? Rolling back your monitor drivers won't make your PC blow up, you know.

I don't think It's really a video driver problem, It's more like is DirectX working or disabled? I've noticed under Troubleshooting that DirectX is mentioned and below a certain point with DirectX disabled the result mentioned here happens and We get this 1024 yada yada yada thing on screen, Of course I'm using XP x64. But that is what I think is happening as I have installed video drivers from 85.xx to 101.90 and seen the same thing, So I'm sticking with 93.71WHQL which seems to be the most stable and problem free until a New WHQL driver comes out.

Failed to initialize renderer should be fixed by patching the game (allowing the unPAK fix to take effect). If you're running 1.61 this simply should not happen with a properly set up computer. If it is, you have a problem somewhere else with your video card drivers or directx. I assume you've reinstalled?

I have a P4, 2.4 GHZ
Had the same issue, "rendered...."
Tried all the suggestions on here, none worked.
BUT I FOUND A SOLUTION ON ANOTHER FORUM.

You need to switch hardware acceleration for your display properties up to high, then the problem fixes. Mine was automatically on low and you grab the cursor and move it along to high...

good luck and happy playing
:)

Greetings!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I loved CivIII and have been in the process of trying to install CivIV for at least a week now...am about to return my second video card b/c it does not have T&L hardware...but then I read some of the posts and apparently, some people are successfully playing the game without the T&L? And if so, my current card is a Diamond Stealth Radeon 9250 PCI Version 256 MB. Has anyone been able to play with this card?

Peace,
Nastassja

I have the exact same problem, but restarting the comp fixed it. It still happens now and then, but I just restart my comp.

"Failed to Initialize Renderer" - fixed! :) after many long hours.... :spank:

The problem was with catalysts 7.7+
How did I find out? I failed Direct3D tests.

you might want to check that too.
Go to Start/run type: dxdiag
Display tab: Test Direct3D

my vc: x1650pro

If you're having similar problem, uninstall catalyst 7.7+ and install 7.6
at least this worked fr me... Good luck!

Hello,

I still experience this problem on BTS 3.13 ; is it the same for others or shouldn't I experience it with this version ?

thanks for answering if you know.

 Sadly, I've been beating myself up with this issue as well.

I can play for quite some time. When the save game gets to near 1meg in size, it continuously crashes.

I still get it, but I find that if I dick around (a technical term, so I apologise if you're not a teccy ;-)) with the screen resolution, e.g. change it from whatever it is to something, anything else then the program starts OK. Weird.

I also got the initialize renderer issue and this what I did to fix it. The Civ IV that I got already has patch 1.61 and I did not load patch 1.74 since it had problems when I tried to install it anyway. I have an Athlon XP 3000+ and ATI Radeon X1050 with 256 MB.

I followed the instructions outlined in this thread:
http://vnboards.ign.com/guinevere_rp/b20664/93219715/p1/

However, instead installing the latest ATI drivers (v8.1), I updated an older version v7.6 based on the recommendation on this page.

Try going into Properties/Settings and then select advanced. Try adjusting your hardware acceleration in the troubleshoot tab. Worked for me :D

This looks like an ATI problem. Not sure why it happened to me. My fix was by pulling the hardware acceleration slider up to full. For those (like me) who didn't know where to find this, do the following:

1. Go to the Display Properties panel. This can be done by two ways:
1.1 Right click the desktop and choose "Properties"
1.2 or Click Start -> "Control Panel" -> "Appearance and Themes" -> "Display"

2. Choose the settings tab
3. Click the "Advanced" button
4. Choose the "Troubleshoot" tab
5. Drag the slider next to "Hardware Acceleration" to full
6. Click OK

Civ 4 then started working fine for me.

The errors I was getting (for reference) were:
Under a clean install (version 1.00) I got - Failed to initialize renderer
Under version 1.61 I got a DirectX error stating - Invalid 3D Device Type

I had this problem, tried to fix it for a couple days, then just Googled the error message. That led me to this forum. Daaussie's solution worked, and I am deeply grateful for that.

When I got this error message, I was really worried that I'd have to uninstall then reinstall the game, the updates, the drivers, etc.

But simply fixing the display resolution from 60Hz to 85Hz fixed the problem.

Thanks! :D
