Fallout: New Vegas

yeah that's what I was thinking. It seems interesting playing the game having to eat, drink, and sleep. I should have played my first game in hardcore. As I just got done playing fallout 3 so I'm fairly familiar with the combat. Unlike when I first started playing fallout3, it took a while to get a hang of the combat. So I think I'm familiar enough with the game mechanics to go to hardcore.

I think you can switch to hardcore in the middle of the game? But you don't get the achievement. I will most likely play through one more time anyways and do hardcore the entire game.

Does anyone know if perception increases energy weapons like in fallout 3? I'm still unclear on that. Perception doesn't seem as mandatory as in Fallout 1 and 2, so I kept it around 5. And I don't know how the above poster goes around with 2 strength. What weapon do you use? How do you carry all your stuff?

When in game - look at your SPECIAL, it should say what skills they affect in description.

Yeah you can switch to hardcore in the middle of a game, but I wouldn't do it though. I imagine it's not so much as hard, but really awkward to adjust to hardcore in the middle of the game. I'd advice you to start a new one if only for the achievement (I don't care about it myself).

The game and character will feel much more interesting if you do it from the start IMO. Stuff that's useless in normal mode become valuable in hardcore. See when not playing hardcore you negate some game aspects/mechanics/things or whatever, such as survival skill for example. I don't see much point in this skill in non-hardcore game. It's another story when you play hardcore. Also items such as "doctor's back" become very much valuable when you cannot heal your crippled limbs by sleeping, also stimpacks etc don't have instant effect in hardcore.
Really to fully experience it play it from the start. :) Forget about your normal "arcade" game and start a new one. Once you go hardcore you... um... well you get the idea. :)

About 2 str... Well as I said my play style focuses on not using strength much. I try not to engage in combat if that's possible (I try to avoid conflict if it's possible. This is not CoD after all). When dealing with hostiles I use stealth and try to pick them one by one from a distance with hunting rifle or similar weapons (10 agility and high gun skill make up for str requirements so using them is not a problem), I usually don't even come close enough to be in range of V.A.T.S, when outside actually. But I can't avoid confrontation of course, it's impossible.
The most effective way for me to take out several enemies in close range (along with sneaking of course) is with "gunslinger"-perk, a handgun (10mm,9mm etc), 10 agility, high enough luck + "finesse"-perk. I get the most AP and accuracy for V.A.T.S this way, so I can disarm and then finish off those enemies with no problem... If they're humans.

So trying to avoid battles I know I can't win and using stealth a lot. For example the quest where you help fanatic ghouls to fly away on rockets (or not :mwaha:), I did it without killing a single Nightkin and every feral ghoul was killed by a sneak attack. If one would notice me, he would kill me with 2 hits  (I tried), because I also have 2 endurance and not using armor. :)
Also "mister sandman" for assassinating NPS's.
As a result I prefer to be alone, companions are a nuisance for me (good carriages though). If one joins me... fine, but if they die they die, I don't babysit them.

As for carrying stuff, yes that's the biggest problem. So it's lots of walking and lots of alcohol for her. Trying to pick only the most valuable stuff and selling ammo a lot. Actually finding myself using ammo as currency. And because vendor's caps are not unlimited I exchange stuff on stuff that doesn't have weight.

That's not to say my character set up is weak, not by a long shot. When used properly, it's deadly. :) I'm level 12, have 140 stimpacks and 40 super stimpacks in my inventory and never used them once so far.
I find it's very interesting to play when not just run' and gunning everything in your path like a turbo terminator. :)

After befrending the Boomers (and helping them with there little ant problem) came across and started to love this weapon! Though it does have a bug when reloading it while running in third person.

The 40mm Bump-gun!! (Ingame called the Grenade Launcher).

For a minute there I thought you meant Left 4 Dead 2, which also has a 40mm grenade launcher of similar design. Which seems to ALWAYS spawn at least 2 if not two on the last stage of No mercy.

I just picked up the bump gun and completed the boomers quest Volare too. Although i think that's regular guns and I use energy weapons.

I also picked up Cass. I was thinking of delivering her to the energy weapons people, but she seems like a better companion than the sniper dude from Novac. She has a better personality and has cooler phrases she says. I think I'll keep her. I chose the violent end to her personal quest. NCR rep took a hit when I wasted the crimson caravan, oh well. I would have reloaded, but I overwrote my save, and didn't want to backtrack and do all the boomer stuff again.

I must say I really dig this game. The quests still aren't as involved as maybe Fallout2, but I love the quantity of quests. It just seems like there is so much more to do in this game than in Fallout 3. In F3 I'd roam around and find cool areas, but I couldn't find the quests associated with those areas. Fallout 3 also had a problem of not giving you an idea where to go for quests. I actually found myself without any quests to work on other than the main quest. I really had no idea where to go. And getting around was so tough in the DC area. I just have to say New Vegas is a much better game than Fallout 3. I can't put my finger on it exactly, but it just seems more fun. Bethesda games to me have always been a little on the boring side (especially Oblivion, but even Morrowind got dull easily).

So I picked up some cool laser stuff from the peeps Cass wanted me to waste. I also got a super cool unique plasma rifle from the brotherhood of steel quest that took me to an industrial plant in the Henderson area (I won't spoil the name)

Is this the Fallout3 to get if you like 1/2 the best?

Just about to leave Good Springs and head to Prim.

Question: are there stat bobbleheads in this one? Or anything that permanently bumps your skills as opposed to the books only being temporary now?

No bobbleheads. Magazines boost the skills (Guns, Speech etc.) temporarily by 10 points while books boost skills permanently by 3 points.

Intense Training perk allows you to add a SPECIAL point, it can be used 10 times. You can also buy implants from New Vegas Medical Clinic. Those are rather expensive though at 4000 caps per implant. They can be bought X times depending on your Endurance.

Oh crap, no luck for me then with my 2 endurance...

LOL ya, I didn't know you could by implants until I decided to stop at that clinic to cure my rads.

I do like these changes, however. bobbleheads were kind of cheesy. Even cheesier if you are like me and look up where they are. :)

The caps weren't a problem with all the money I won in blackjack. :D I burned a lot of it on 6 implants.

Is this the Fallout3 to get if you like 1/2 the best?

yes. Actually it's hard to say. It still isn't like Fallout 2 exactly. But it's closer to fallout 1/2 than Fallout 3 by far. There's lots more quests and factions and more stuff to do. Bethesda games are kind of boring, where this game is fun. It's still first person, so you can't be completely inept at moving around, but with VATS combat isn't too tough. I've been lazy lately and just prefer regular shooting to vats. Although I use it more now I took the sniper perk.

FINISHED!

30 hours played.

(now for some more side-quests ^^)

Yep the last time I played fallout 3 I was checking stuff in fallout wiki all the time. Yeah they're unbelievably cheesy and kinda experience breaking, when I had to plan my SPECIAL to never take 10 something for example or to never max my skills beyond 90 because there is a bobblehead that i had to take into account. Which was hard to do anyway with all those skill books lying everywhere I go... bah by the time I was level 29 in fallout 3 i had ALL skills maxed out except for melee and unarmed. I was basically God of war who could just obliterate everyone and everything in my way without even a slight challenge... and all that while using almost the same stats I use now in new vegas (2,8,2,6,6,10,7) and never using armor.

Can you keep winning unlimited amount of caps in blackjack? I'm yet to enter the strip, but figuring with 7 luck I might make my caps there. How high is your luck?
There is stuff in new vegas I could see myself spending on like implants or weapons in top condition from gun runners for example compared to fallout 3 where I never wanted to spend on anything (nothing was worth it for me), as a result i just hoarded caps and had over 100 000 caps by the time I stopped playing when civ5 came out. Didn't even try all DLC (anchorage and broken steel), and then New Vegas came out.

actually you can stay, just not gamble. I was worried I wouldn't be able to complete my quests for a place if I won too much, but no worries there. You can still complete your quests.

Anyone know if there's a way to restrict your companions so they don't go running off chasing after mobs? I hate when they do that. Especially in vaults and such. I like to explore my vault slowly and make sure I loot every body, every item, and every container. But I find myself chasing after my companions when they go chasing after mobs. I prefer to search the vaults room by room, but instead I find it easier to clear the entire floor of mobs first, then do a room by room search. Sometimes moving too fast can be deadly... if there are mines or traps.

Did vault 11 the other day. It's a pretty cool story behind that one. :goodjob: Afterwords I read in wiki it was based off the short story the lottery. I also thought the lottery in Nipton might have been based off the short story the lottery. When I first heard about it, I thought it might end up being something like the Marylin Manson song Man that you Fear video (also based off of the story The Lottery). In case you are all wondering, in real life you can actually by lottery tickets in Nipton as California has a state lottery, we do not.

Nah, if you win too much you're asked to get out ^^

Dammit I knew there's gonna be something like that... But how did you get rich then Disgustipated?

Try putting them on "passive". Don't know if it helps, I didn't notice the difference between the 2.

possible solution for VAT bug.

Hello just thought i'd post this here just in case it may help anyone else who may be experiencing a bug which makes your pc crash when using the VAT system.

For me it was either my soundcard or it's driver, it appears to have some kind of compatibility issue with the game so i made sound run off my motherboard inbuilt sound instead, i'm afraid i don't know if it will work for anyone else experiencing this problem but it worked for me, hope it is of some use.

I got rich playing blackjack with a luck of 8. I'm sure even a luck of 7 you can do well. Assuming you know how to play blackjack decently.

You can win about $10,000 at each casino before they cut you off and restrict you from playing. The white glove place you can get a little higher as that's a classier casino. I think I won about $45,000 before I got cut off of all 4 casinos. 45 k is enough to pay for the implants pretty much.

I have to give y'all a heads up. One of the quests "Beyond the Beef" is buggy as hell that will crash on the PC. Here are some suggestions over at the Vault wikia has to offer to work around these bugs:

  • When starting a conversation with Chauncey, the game crashes. It appears that the closer you stand to him when you start the conversation with him, the less likely it is to crash. PC Version.
  • When waiting to meet the investigator's contact, Chauncey, in the bath house, the game crashes. Use wait and quick save frequently to work around it. PC version.
