Welcome back Kitten. As you can see we have made good progress with the Romans nearly eliminated. TheViking has the game at the moment.

Viking 5's primary task: To ensure that everything in the society revolves around the holy war. The first step is to clamp down on any and all opposition against him, have everyone even secretly thinking that his reign might not be perfect shot and establish strict censorship. The official story of his reign looks like this:

During the magnificent Viking 5's reign (1774-1794 AD) our glorious empire made great progress in all areas. The population grew to well over 10 million and the amount of gold in our coffers increased to about 5 times what it was at the start of his reign. Our scientists made great progress and scientific discoveries were made every 3-4 turns on average. The rest of the world greatly envied this glorious empire and 5 cities (2 Roman and 3 Mongol) by absolutely free choice decided to join this greatest empire of all times and more cities are waiting in line to do this. The Civfanatic empire has 5 more wonders of the world than at the start of Viking 5's reign. What happened after 1794 AD is classified and anyone even thinking of attempting to reveal anything about it will be charged for treason.

A more detailed log of events secretly smuggled from the empire looks like this:

1774 AD (0): Synchronicity production changed to bank. Adjust production in several cities and mobilize the society for war.

1776 AD (1): Romans want to speak but we refuse. Antium (size 1) bribed for 61 gold, 17 plundered. Now only Rome remains. Rush buy barracks in Cumae. Sell some courthouses on the main continent since they are useless in fundy. We don't need laws - Viking 5's words are the law. Mongols do not have conscription !! This means their capital is ours using crusaders without destroying city walls.

1778 AD (2): Rush buy Magellan in Elvis P after three caravans made it cheap to do so. Zulu cannon destroyed at M/all GenghisK.

1780 AD (3): Elvis P builds Magellan's expedition. ARRRRGGGGHHHHH !!!! Mongols get conscription from Romans. Lots of Mongol units approaching CircZeville but they are all successfully destroyed. Check out the Zulu's attitude, they want us to pay them 1000 gold for peace. It would have been more appropriate for them to pay us 1000 gold for short-term peace (Viking 5's plans do not include any major military operations against them). Rush buy bank in Synchronicity for 84 gold. Rush buy some other stuff too (mainly cannons, barracks and diplomats).

1782 AD (4): Zulus acquire physics from Greeks, meaning we must steal it ASAP since we're currently researching it. Therefore M/all GenghisK rush buys a diplomat. Fort Az (south of Hlobane) is empty so we reoccupy it using two holy riflemen and now it can't be bribed. Two Mongol units destroyed outside CircZeville and the holy crusader that did this becomes veteran.

1784 AD (5): A Zulu knight dies attacking Fort Az. ARRRGGGGHHH !! Mongols in democracy. Attempt to talk them out of it - successs !! Mongol government becomes a monarchy so we bribe Samarkand for 1335 gold, 135 plundered. Continue moving holy cannons and diplomats towards Rome.

1786 AD (6): A Greek diplomat appears at M/all Genghis K and peace is made. The diplomat is then expelled. We steal physics from the Zulus (at Hlobane), at the same time checking Hlobane's price: 1904 gold (too expensive and also we only have 1674 gold). Rush buy stock exchange in Synchronicity. A Mongol cannon near Samarkand bribed for 340 gold since Samarkand's defenses are currently rather shaky (to say the least...). Pollution near Synchronicity.

1788 AD (7): Mongols acquire chemistry form the Zulus. We start researching magnetism. A few Zulu units die attacking Fort Az and the Mongols unsuccessfully attack Fort Belisarius (located between Karakorum and CircZeville). Rush buy diplomat in Samarkand. Start building Shakespeare in Synchronicity. Caravel with reinforcements heads west from Stormeville. Several diplomats arrive at fortresses near Rome and we're getting ready for the final assault.

1790 AD (8): Nishapur bribed for 1424 gold, 265 plundered, we get chemistry and we now have control of the Colossus. Only 3 Mongol cities left. Start operation "Roma delenda est" <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/rocketq3.gif" border=0>. A diplomat takes a peek <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/scan.gif" border=0> at Rome and finds that it's defended by two musketeers and one riflemen unit. A second riflemen unit is almost completed. The city contains temple, marketplace, city walls and a harbor. The presence of a riflemen unit means the city walls must definitely be destroyed and there are enough holy diplomats nearby to do just that. Riflemen production sabotaged - harbor destroyed - temple destroyed - marketplace destroyed - city walls destroyed !! First holy cannon attack destroys riflemen unit, second holy cannon attack a musketeer, a third holy cannon the final musketeer and a holy crusader walks into Rome to teach the Romans some important stuff about religion, plunder 103 gold and destroy the Roman civilization in the process. We capture the Hanging Gardens and Marco Polo's Embassy. MP reveals some new infomation about the Greeks: They have 2 cities (Athena and Sparta), 791 gold and 42 techs (same as we) and are researching leadership. They are allied with everyone (except for us of course). In fact, except for us, everyone is allied with everyone but we are at war against everyone except the Greeks (but that will soon be rectified - perhaps Az will declare war against the Greeks <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/biggrin.gif" border=0>). Immediately start moving the holy troops near Rome east since their next targets are the Zulus/Greeks. Rush buy riflemen in CircZeville.

1792 AD (9): A Mongol knight appears from Karakorum and wants to speak, demands some tech from us. We refuse and we also refuse to sign a cease fire and the knight then dies attacking Fort Belisarius and the holy riflemen unit there becomes veteran. Zulu government overthrown. Kashgar bribed for 1240 gold, 270 plundered. We Love the High Priest day celebrated in Rome. Synchronicity rush buys Shakespeare's Theatre since at the moment there are no cities to bribe (the Mongol capital would have been bribed now if that were possible).

1794 AD (10): Zulus become a democracy. Synchronicity builds Shakespeare's Theatre and now has 5 WOWs. City of This founded to enable ships to sail through our continent if we want to move troops to the east.

Status report:

41 cities (+6), 1000 (exactly) gold (+787), population of 10,920,000 (+1,690,000). We have 5 more wonders now, 2 built and 3 captured. We have 42 techs like the Zulus and Greeks, the Mongols have 41. We will very soon discover magnetism and Leo will then upgrade our caravels, explosives should IMO then be researched next if possible. Everyone else is researching leadership. Several barracks have been built to construct veteran units - we must be prepared to conquer the Zulus using military means because it seems they prefer to stay in democracy. It may be possible to get them to overthrow their government by talking to them though, making things easier. Important: The units in Fort Az (south of Hlobane) should never attack anything (at least not unless the fortress has been filled with lots of attacking units and diplomats), they are there for the Zulus to attack (all such attacks will be unsuccessful because the fortress is on a mountain). This also seems to divert the Zulu's attention away from M/all Genghis, the only thing there to worry about are Zulu or Greek diplomats that might want to bribe this city.

BTW CirceZville should be renamed Circeeville. That's the name had given to it but something must have hapenned during the conversions...

A fanatical government...but no fanatics (hmm)

Lionhearted Kate came to power in 1794...she gained it by being the a mere secretary to THEVIKING...he dictated his will to her that he left the empire to the strongest civfanatic...and she wrote that "...it shall all be left to kate...".

She toured the lands and beheaded the diplomats for being dressed in clothes not befitting a civfanatic (look at the civfanatics gallery...they don't wear suits!).

Next she decided that she would merely expand the empire further with war whilst she enjoyed the buttons of power.

In addition she renames Azbeenhereagain to Azbeen...a wise choice as fears we growing that Azbeenhereagain would be renamed by a returning Az! as Azbeenhereagainandthiscitystillsux.

The wars are pursued...karakorum has its hills (mined) invaded. We dispatch troops from all over the empire...no real need of garrisoning cities.

kitten discovers something VERY VERY amusing...a 1 square island with a zulu caravan fortified on it!

(2) 1798 A.D banks, settlers and cannon...we have got magnetism, taken electricity as next invention to target.

Building cities everywhere...there are few good sites left...so any will do. Our empire is a slum...well I'll let someone else sort THAT out...

I haven't d/loaded it yet but I wanted to ask you guys something...

In other SG some players complained because the game was finished too quickly. They said they would have prefered to continue buildin up the empire, improving land and building cities...

Is anybody of that opinion in here?

Yes. I think it would be fairly easy to go for a quick conquest but a switch to defence and then towards building the Spaceship would be more interesting.

I do not have any strong opinions on this so if you want a spaceship it's OK.

The only question this leaves is when to stop the war. Now or not until the Zulus/Greeks (except for one city) have been conquered ? I'd prefer to conquer everything first but again this is not a big issue for me.

First thing Az does is make peace with the Greeks, eternal friends of the CivFanatics...

Great history Az. I am next so could you please email me the game. I am anxious to get started. I plan to continue the pressure on the Zulus and Greeks but also to switch to Democracy and concentrate on expanding Science as quickly as possible.

One danger about switching to democracy now: If a (small) city is supporting lots of units this might force disbanding of some units we do not want to disband (I once got into some trouble when I forgot to check my units after switching from fundy to demo - a transport full of tanks and spies got disbanded). In this case this means units in fort Az and in Azville (the greatest place on the planet because of its big army ).

But having spies, engineers, cavalry and railroad would be fun so switching to demo makes sense since we're gonna build a SS anyway.

We should definitely get rid of all these units when turning to democracy...
Zulus must also be completly (or almost) defeated by then! Imagine the senate forcing us to make peace with them now!

But of course there's another alternative disband all offensive unit and keep only defensive. Then head for the spaceship and forget about conquest of the earth...

Here is my history.

1826AD (0) Rush build Harbour in Azville as it is short of food with 3 settlers. Also changed some Courthouses and Colosseums to Aqueducts and Riflemen to Caravans. Change from 80% Tax (1406 income/187 cost) and 20% Science (17 turns) to 20% Tax (1146/187) and 80% Science (9). Adjust the home cities of some units but I will have further work to do to prevent disbands when we change to Democracy. Move forces from Azville to fort 2 squares north of Ulundi. Investigate Ulundi and find 4 Riflemen and City Walls with Bank being built. Ulundi has 6 other improvements so will need about 8 Diplomats to down city wall before we can attack.

1828AD (1) Zulus develop Sanitation. Barbarians land near Turin and capture it. Start building several Diplomats. Build city of Vesuvius north of Pompeii.

1830AD (2) Discover Electricity. Start researching explosives. Rush build more Diplomats.

1832AD (3) Galleon spots Greek city of Thermopylae (2). Destroy 2 Zulu Settlers near Ulundi. Complete fort next to Ulundi and move cannon and Riflemen into to prepare for assault. Move new Diplomats forward Azville via Galleon chain from Hispalis. After 6 Diplomats the Ulundi City Wall falls.

1834AD (4) Ulundi falls to Veteran Cannon and we gain Sanitation. Change 3 Settlers 1 Riflemen and 1 Cannon from Azville to home base in Ulundi.

1836AD (5) Another Cannon from Azville is home based in Ulundi and we are now clear to switch to Democracy. Need 60% Lux and 32 Elivi to prevent riots in anarchy.

1838AD (6) Achieve Democracy. Tax 0%, Science 80% (2) and Lux 20%. Only need 1 Elvis to prevent riot in Ulundi.

1840AD (7) Most cities celebrate WLTPDs. Five cities have problems because of units in the field. Eleven of the celebrating cities are below size 3. I rush build some needed Aquaducts and Sewers. We discover Explosives and start researching Steam Engine. All Settlers are upgraded to Engineers by Leo's Workshop. Bribe Turin back from Barbarians for 52 gold. Build fort just south of Zimbabwe and move in several Cannon. Also move forward more Diplomats. Disband Riflemen and Cannon in fort south of Hlobane to prevent riots in M/all GenghisK.

1842AD (8) It takes 6 Diplomats to take down Zimbabwe's City Walls and then 5 Cannon to capture it with Sun Tzu's Academy. The Senate supports continuing action against the Zulus. Sell 2 remaining Barracks and some unneeded city walls to fund revolt in Thermopylae for 650 gold with 165 plundered.

1844AD (9) Senate signs cease fire with Greeks. Discover Steam Engine and start researching Railroad. Galleon spots Greek city of Athens. Build fort next to Bapedi and fill with Cannon and Diplomats. Also build fort next to Isandhlwana. Reduce Science to 60% (2) so as to allow Taxes of 20% (394/328). Keep Lux at 20%.

1846AD (10) Pollution near Synchronicity. Discover Railroad and start researching Theory of Gravity. Takes 6 Diplomats to destroy Bapedi City Walls and 6 Cannon to capture it. Unfortunately the Senate meets behind my back and signs a cease fire. Start building a few railroads to begin linking cities.

We started with 13.86 million people in 54 cities and now have 22.46 (+8.60) million people in 59 (+5) cities. Taxes 20% (403/331), Science 60% (2) and Lux 20%. There is 106 gold in the treasury. In order to keep the pop growing we may need to raise taxes and lower Science to pay for rush building Aquaducts and Sewers. I have readyed a few Caravans to build Issac Newton's College when we have the Theory of Gravity.

But for the Senate imposed cease fire I would have gone for Isandhlwana next to get Adam Smith's Trading Co.

Aparently you also managed to turn to Republic pretty calmly.
I had built many courthouses thinking we would jump to Democracy after fundy. But since you choose Republic they were usseless. (hope you didn't sell them all though! I didn't look).

Reign of the democratic Viking 6

1846 AD (0): Set taxes to 70%, need $$ to rush buy several sewer systems. Several cities should be able to reach size 20 during my reign and some Zulu cities will be conqured, bribed or subverted. This results in 1510/331 gold per turn. Luxuries increased to 30% to start celebrations in more cities, several redundant Elvii eliminated. Adjust production in a few cities.

1848 AD (1): Zulus are unhappy with our troops near Intombe. Rush buy sewer system in 7 cities and some other stuff too.

1850 AD (2): Civfanatic high council is very happy, except for the military guy. Synchronicity starts building Darwins Voyage. Rush buy several aqueducts and sewer systems.

1851 AD (3): Taxes changed to 30% (734/370) and science to 40% (3 turns), luxuries at 30% so lots of cities continue celebrating. Rush buy Darwin, improvements and diplomats, now we have exactly 0 gold !!

1852 AD (4): Synchronicity builds Darwin's Voyage and we discover Theory of gravity and industrialization. Greeks develop tactics and Zulus acquire it. Zulu capital moved to London. Science increased to 50% at the expense of taxes since Viking 6 has been told of something called espionage.

18543AD (5): Zulus unhappy with the presence of Viking troops in "their" territory but do not declare war (lucky them)...

1854 AD (6): Zulu government overthrown and they declare war !! We discover refrigeration and start researching communism. Hlobane conquered (several diplomats and cannons died) and we acquire tactics. Senate does *not* sign a cease fire so taxes increased to 70% in order to bribe Zulu cities next turn because they are no longer a deomocracy.

1855 AD (7): Greeks breaks cease fire. Barbarians land near Ripken. Isandhlwana bribed for 1464 gold, 384 plundered and we've captured Adam Smith's Trading Co. Expenses per turn drop to 260 gold.

1856 AD (8): Greeks destroy Thermopylae. Barbarians take Ripken since Viking 6 refused to pay them 1200 gold. Instead, Intombe is bribed for 2060 gold, 380 plundered. Swasi bribed for 211 gold, 20 plundered.

1857 AD (9): Sparta bribed for 1140 gold, 284 plundered. Now only Athena remains of the Greeks. Ripken bribed from the Barbarians for 416 gold. The city now sucks, several improvements are needed.

1858 AD (10): Greek government overthrown, they are in despotism (!!?) now. Mpondo bribed for 2336 gold, 264 plundered. Now only two enemy cities remain, London and Athens. They are also capitals. It will be up to Viking 6's successor to decide which one of these becomes our pet city (I suspect it will be Athens ).

We now have 64 cities and a population of 38,430,000, an increase of 16 million. Now that all cities except for two capitals have been conquered or bribed I've set science to 50% (2 turns), taxes to 20% (628/272) and luxuries at 30%, allowing several cities to celebrate but some of them now need supermarkets and double irrigation. Several cities are near size 20 now. We have 53 techs (+4).

Building a spaceship (should we choose to do so) will be quick from now on. In fact I played this speedily since I'm becoming more and more interested in getting involved in a new succession game (but I'll finish this one) - see discussion in the Classic Succession #4 thread. Not allowing fundy and/or some forms of bribes might be interesting/challenging since winning like we've done here is very easy in most types of maps.

I actually did go to Democracy not Republic. The game is a bit confusing as it says President of a Republic instead of President of a Democracy

 
Permit me to ask why then did you sell the Courthouses?!!??!?!?!??!?!?!?!

(of course you always do what you want and that's the agreement but permit me to criticise...)

Permit me to ask why then did you sell the Courthouses?!!??!?!?!??!?!?!?!

(of course you always do what you want and that's the agreement but permit me to criticise...)


I did'nt SELL any Courthouses but I did change some that were building to Aquaducts to prevent bumping up against the 8 pop limit. We can always up the Lux rate to keep celebrating but there is no substitute for an Aquaduct or a Sewer. Courthouses are useful and I did complete one and plan a few more. Theviking had to rush build several Sewers to keep the pop growing so few Courthouses were completed before it was back to you again. I did sell some Barracks because we got Sun Tzu's and some City Walls in safe areas.


By the way are you keeping London or Athens as the pet city while going for the Spaceship?
